NAIO to submit AI law proposal to Digital Ministry by end of June
SEPANG: The National AI Office (NAIO) will submit its proposals on artificial intelligence (AI) laws to the Digital Ministry by the end of this month.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said NAIO has been tasked with submitting its recommendations on AI legislation to help develop a comprehensive governance framework.
"The Digital Ministry has commenced the process by holding dialogues with the industry...and right now, we are engaging and interacting with all the relevant ministries and agencies.
"Once I get the suggestions from the NAIO, we will put up a paper to the Cabinet. We will seek its guidance as to what to do next. If that paper is passed and accepted by Cabinet, we will have to start work on the Bill itself," he told reporters after launching the RAI Portal here Tuesday (June 17).
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said had stated on Monday (June 16) that Malaysia is studying to develop AI legislation to address legal complexities in the digital age.
She said she has written to Gobind to propose a meeting between the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) and the Digital Ministry to initiate a discussion on drafting new AI laws.
According to Azalina, Malaysia has no specific laws focused on AI because, unlike traditional technologies, AI operates on an entirely different platform. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli has addressed criticism that he is often perceived as emotional when debating issues, saying his passionate approach is frequently misunderstood. In a posting on the social media platform X, the Pandan member of parliament said those who knew him personally understood that he does not allow emotions to cloud his judgment. "People often confuse personal emotional responses with passionate arguments. For me, once I'm done debating a matter, I feel nothing. I simply move on," he wrote. Rafizi, who recently stepped down from the Cabinet, said some mocked him for appearing "emotional" in public discourse, but insisted that politics remained, to him, a profession rather than a personal crusade. "Politics is just a job. Some people get excited about securing political positions. For me, it's like getting transferred to a different department at work," he said. He added that the defining moments in his life were deeply personal events such as the birth of his son, performing the haj with his father, and the death of a close friend, not his political journey. "Politics is just a daily routine. Posts come and go. That's why people may not understand why I've never given up on politics. "Because for me, it's simply a job. We all work until the day we die," he said. Rafizi resigned as economy minister last month following his defeat to Nurul Izzah Anwar in the race for the PKR deputy presidency.
