Where Asa Newell is going in mock drafts after the lottery
Former Georgia Bulldogs star power forward Asa Newell has been mocked as a first round pick in the 2025 NBA draft. Newell's projecting landing spot shifts from the top 10 to middle of the first.
Now that the NBA lottery has officially taken place, certain fits for Newell have emerged. Draft experts have attempted to predict where Newell will go based on positional need and scheme fit.
The 6-foot-11, 220-pound forward offers rim protection, the ability to switch on to smaller players defensively, an array of post moves, excellent athleticism and has shooting upside. Newell is a lob threat and strong dunker. He helped Georgia make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade.
Here is where Newell is going in mock drafts after the lottery.
ESPN: 21st overall pick, Utah Jazz (via Minnesota Timberwolves)
The Jazz acquired this pick for trading away Rudy Gobert and now they get a potential replacement at the four or five. Utah has found great value through picks outside of the lottery, such as Kyle Filipowski and Isaiah Collier.
They could get the same with Newell, a high-ceiling player who has all the measurables to be an elite offensive talent. He may be more of a power forward with those measurables, but if he can shoot the three-ball at an efficient rate, a role for him as stretch big isn't out of the question.
ESPN's Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo made the mock draft.
Yahoo: 18th pick, Washington Wizards
Similar to the Jazz, the Wizards acquired this pick via trade from the Memphis Grizzlies. Also, similar to this pick, the Wizards have plenty of minutes for young talent like Newell to develop. More than likely, Alex Sarr is the center of the future in Washington, but Newell could be a nice foil to him if Newell can develop his offensive game. His high energy game could be a boost for the Wizard's backcourt defense.
Yahoo's Kevin O'Connor mocked this selection.
CBS: Orlando Magic, 25th pick
Unlike both the Wizards and Jazz, who had the two worst records in the league, the Orlando Magic were a playoff team that could've been a title contender with better injury luck and three point shooting. The Magic also lack in backcourt depth and Newell could immediately qualify for starting minutes if he beats out Wendell Carter Jr. in the frontcourt. Even then, the Magic don't have many forwards on the bench, and Newell's shot blocking and high energy can keep him on the floor for longer.
CBS's Kyle Boone made this pick in his mock draft.

Adam Silver Provides Update on NBA Expansion Amid Seattle Rumors

Adam Silver Provides Update on NBA Expansion Amid Seattle Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver shared an update on where the league stands in terms of adding new teams. Rumors about a potential expansion have circulated for years now, but it seems as though that possibility is closer than before. Advertisement Silver attended Game 2 of the 2025 NBA Finals in Oklahoma City before the Thunder clashed with the Indiana Pacers. During a press conference, he told reporters the league was studying the possibility of adding new teams to the competition, naming the upcoming owners meeting in July as a crucial point for these plans. With Las Vegas and Seattle being named as the strongest candidates to receive a franchise, the expectations are high, but nothing will be formalized until that gathering. NBA commissioner Adam Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images During Wednesday's installment of "The Dan Patrick Show," Silver was asked about the expansion plans. He had a different approach this time, saying they are studying every possibility before making a decision. Advertisement "There are cities worth thinking about," Silver said. "It's not obvious to me we should expand. I think it's likely over time, we will, and the reason I say it's not obvious is because, as a global business, adding another U.S. city, arguably, it's unclear how much growth we'll get as result to that, and when we're adding expansion franchises, you're deluding the competition to more teams. Speaking on the cities that could join the league next, he explained what they're looking at. "I do believe certain markets can be added to the NBA, and that's where we're gonna look at. I think part of it is geographic, it's a big country and we're making sure we're represented all around the country, and over time, maybe there's more we can do in Canada or Mexico City. I don't wanna say specific cities today because many have reached out to us to say they're interested." Seattle, which lost the SuperSonics in 2008, is always mentioned as the first city that should get an expansion team. ESPN reported in September that the Thunder could give the Sonics their franchise history back from 1967 to 2007 if they finally got an expansion team in Seattle. Advertisement Las Vegas, which has the Knights in the NHL, the Raiders in the NFL and the Aces in the WNBA, has been considered another frontrunner to get this approval. Two years ago, RedBird Capital founder and managing partner Gerry Cardinale expressed his desire to bring an NBA expansion team to "Sin City" in partnership with none other than LeBron James and Fenway Sports Group. The interest is at an all-time high in these two cities, but this summer appears to be crucial for any decision owners make. Why the 2025 NBA Finals lack on-court logos, according to Adam Silver

Why the 2025 NBA Finals lack on-court logos, according to Adam Silver The lack of real on-court NBA Finals logo decals have been a huge discussion point during this championship series, and the league's head honcho has explained his take on the issue. NBA commissioner Adam Silver explained ahead of Wednesday night's Game 3 in Indianapolis that the on-court decals actually went away "a decade ago" for player slipping concerns. "We're back to adding them virtually," Silver said about the logos that fans have missed in this playoff series. Indeed, virtual NBA Finals logos popped up during Sunday's Game 2, but they didn't quite hit the same. Yes, the league and ESPN heard the gripes and at least did something, but the results were admittedly lackluster. Obviously, a player slipping, falling and getting injured during the NBA Finals on an on-court logo would be a nightmare scenario for the league. If these decals were seriously that problematic, it makes sense why they're gone. However, it's also 2025. Surely there's a safe way of celebrating the NBA Finals on the court without making it slippery for the players. We'll see what the league comes up with next year.

Knicks denied permission to interview Kidd, Udoka and Finch in coaching search, AP sources say

NEW YORK — The New York Knicks were denied permission to speak with coaches Jason Kidd of Dallas, Ime Udoka of Houston and Chris Finch of Minnesota in a slow start to find Tom Thibodeau's replacement . All three coaches are under contract and their organizations declined to make them available for interviews with the Knicks, two people with knowledge of the details said Wednesday. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the interview process was to remain private.
