Krispy Kreme Japan has Pac-Man donuts to celebrate video game star's 45th birthday
Making 'waka-waka' noises as you eat them is optional, but very tempting.
There's a big birthday in the video game world coming up this month, as May 22 will mark the 45th anniversary of the arcade release of developer Namco's original Pac-Man arcade game. And while many people celebrate their birthday with cake, this year Pac-Man is one of those cultured individuals who instead will be opting for birthday donuts, specifically Pac-Man donuts, which are being offered by Krispy Kreme Japan.
Three different treats are coming to salute the star who loves to eat, starting with the Pac-Man Custard Sprinkle, which puts a swirl of custard cream and sprinkles in the color of Pac-Man's ghost adversaries atop the ring, and also gives you a Pac-Man shaped monaka wafer.
Speaking of the ghosts, they get their turn in the spotlight on the Ghost Chocolate donut, with a ghost monaka lurking inside the lines of a maze drawn in vanilla custard lines, and a chocolate cream filling inside the hole-less donut.
The final Pac-Man donut, called the Power Strawberry, is a more subtle nod to in-the-know fans, who will recognize this as not just any strawberry, but the second in the series of point-granting bonus items that periodically appear within the game's maze.

The Pac-Man Custard Sprinkle and Ghost Chocolate are both priced at 410 yen (US$2.80), while the Power Strawberry is just 388 yen. You can also get them together in a Pac-Man Box set for 1,177 yen, 31 yen cheaper than buying them individually.

Or, if you're in the mood for not one, not three, but six donuts, Krispy Kreme also has the Pac-Man Half-dozen set, for 1,825 yen. This gets you one of each of the three Pac-Man donuts, two Original Glazed donuts, and one chocolate sprinkle donut. While supplies last they come in a cool collaboration box, which you'll probably want to be careful not to smear chocolate on so that you can reuse or display it.
Also while supplies last, purchasing the Pac-Man Half Dozen gets you a sticker, some of which are marked as winners that will get you one more Original Glazed for free.
For fans of donuts and games, the urge to run to your nearest Krispy Kreme branch to try these is no doubt strong, but for those who can make the trip to the donut chain's Shibuya Cine Tower branch in Tokyo's downtown Shibuya neighborhood, you'll get to see the place decked out in Pac-Man interior decorations.
The Pac-Man donuts go on sale March 14, and will be available for a limited time.

Krispy Kreme Japan giving away free donuts for National Donut Day
No dollars to donuts. Every once in a while, there's a push to get a Western holiday to catch on with the Japanese public. Christmas is locked in and Halloween has made some impressive headway over the years, but efforts to get Easter celebrations going seem to be floundering, probably because it's too hard to know when that holiday is each year. But one Western holiday that I think has potential here is National Donut Day. This is an American holiday, observed on the first Friday of June, that was started by Christian church and charity group The Salvation Army through events where donuts were handed out to those affected by the Great Depression and soldiers fighting overseas. Now, thanks to Krispy Kreme, National Donut Day has arrived in Japan. I suppose this means it should be called International Donut Day, but I guess they don't want to be too presumptuous. In honor of this day, which falls on 6 June this year, Krispy Kreme has a sizable giveaway planned. ▼ This times 10,000 From the time each location opens and while supplies last on National Donut Day, Krispy Kreme will be giving out free Original Glazed donuts with any purchase, excluding sole purchases of those little super-cheap things like birthday candles or message cards. This giveaway will be held at all locations across the country for a total of 10,000 free donuts. Three exceptions are the Krispy Kreme locations at the Tokyo International Forum, Shibuya Cine Tower, and Funabashi LaLaport Tokyo-Bay. These places all have theater kitchens where you can see the donuts being made, and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., freshly baked Original Glazed donuts will be given away for National Donut Day. Although the fact that you have to purchase something to get the free donuts means it's not a giveaway in the truest sense of the word, it is possible to parlay your free donut into a dozen Original Glazed donuts. All you have to do is follow Krispy Kreme on Twitter or Instagram and make a post sharing your impressions of the Original Glazed donut with the hashtag #ドーナツデーはオリグレ (#DonutDayisOriginalGlazed) and there's a chance you'll be one of the lucky 12 winners who get a whole box of them. I'm personally more of the mind that every day is donut day. But, for those who don't share my passion for fried bread and the hypertension that goes along with it, this is the perfect chance to remind a donut how you feel at Krispy Kreme or wherever else you like to get your greasy, sweet fix. Krispy Kreme releases Pac-Man doughnuts in Japan… but are they any good?
Celebrate Pac-Man's birthday in the neighbourhood where he was born, with an immersive game experience. The other day, a box of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts arrived at our office in Shinjuku. Well, we thought it was a box of doughnuts until we lifted the lid and found nothing but a sheet of paper inside. Looking closer, we found it was cleverly designed to look like a Pac-Man game screen, with the words, 'Come to Shibuya on 21 May' printed in the lower right corner. ▼ So that's what we did, arriving at the chain's Shibuya Cine Tower branch with no idea what was in store for us. With the entrance covered in illustrations that resembled a Pac-Man game screen, we felt a flutter of excitement as we stepped inside. Looking over our shoulder to check for ghosts, we found ourselves immersed in the world of the game, with Pac-Man motifs all over the place, including the walls and tables. There was even a giant doughnut sculpture on display, creating a fun vibe that had us wanting to take photos at every turn. According to staff, when the original glazed doughnuts are being made, the window decals make it look like the freshly made doughnuts are being carried right into Pac-Man's mouth. ▼ Both the Pac-Man characters and doughnuts appear in gorgeous pixel art designs. With the store itself making it feel like you've stepped into the video game, the setting is complete with a special trio of collaboration doughnuts. The Pac-Man Custard Sprinkle (410 yen takeout; 418 yen for eat-in) brings Pac-Man to life in the form of a custard-flavoured cream doughnut decorated with colorful sprinkles. The Ghost Chocolate (410 yen yakeout, 418 yen for eat-in) is filled with chocolate cream and takes its inspiration from the ghosts that chase Pac-Man, depicting them on the hunt while inside the maze. The Power Strawberry (388 yen takeout; 396 yen for eat-in) features strawberry cream and strawberry icing, so you can enjoy the taste of Pac-Man's delicious power-up item in the real world. The colours of the tables inside the store pop beautifully against the colourful doughnuts, creating a scene that looks like the familiar game screen. ▼ With a ghost, a Pac-Man and a power strawberry on the table, it's hard to resist re-enacting the gameplay on the table. If you opt for takeout, you'll still be able to enjoy the thrill of the Pac-Man game with the limited-edition box that comes with the 'Pac-Man Half Dozen ' value set. Priced at 1,825 yen for takeout or 1,859 yen for eat-in, the set includes the three collaboration doughnuts plus a couple of original glazed and a doughnut of your choice. ▼ Plus, there's an in-store campaign where customers can receive a special collaboration sticker with their purchase. Before leaving, we couldn't resist snapping a commemorative photo of Pac-Man, who was making a special appearance as the manager of the store for one day only. ▼ We were told that Pac-Man's birthday is 22 May and his birthplace is the Shibuya area, which makes this a fitting collaboration. The doughnuts will be available from 14 May to around mid-June, during which time you can also enjoy the game-inspired decorations at the Shibuya Cine Tower store. It's a great way to celebrate Pac-Man's 45th birthday, so be sure to stop by and enjoy the immersive experience while it's available. Bandai Namco to power up overseas retail presence with more shops
TOKYO -- Japanese entertainment group Bandai Namco Holdings is deepening its global push with plans to quintuple its experience-based stores in overseas markets in the next five years. Multi-brand retail complexes, dubbed Bandai Namco Cross Stores, offer merchandise based on the group's popular intellectual properties. They range from model kits based on the Gundam sci-fi anime series and game cards from the One Piece adventure franchise to Pac-Man merchandise, Tamagotchi digital pets and other toys. Capsule toy vending machines and an arcade area are also under the same roof.
