In April 2025, a photograph spread online purportedly showing U.S. President Donald Trump showing a group of children what appeared to be a collectible trading card of the July 2024 assassination attempt targeting him. The picture appeared to have been taken April 21, when Trump hosted the White House Easter Egg Roll, an annual tradition where families gather to roll colored eggs down the White House lawn.
As the photo spread, The Daily Mirror, a British tabloid, published a story with the headline "Trump blasted for showing assassination trading card to kids at White House event."

We found the photograph in Getty Images' database of photojournalism. The image was shot by Chip Somodevilla, with the caption:

At the Butler rally, one person was killed and two others were wounded when the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire from a nearby roof as Trump spoke. Secret Service agents fatally shot Crooks and rushed Trump off stage after a bullet struck his ear.
The Trump administration does not appear to be selling this specific collectible card through official channels, though cards with the same photograph and captions are available on the e-commerce platform eBay as of this writing. Similar trading cards are available for sale on sites unaffiliated with Trump. The Trump Organization is selling a book of photographs with an image from the assassination attempt on its cover.

US Marines to deploy to Los Angeles to help quell anti-ICE riots
A battalion of 500 U.S. Marines are mobilizing to Los Angeles to respond to anti-immigration enforcement riots, Fox News has learned. The Marines will be tasked with protecting federal property and federal personnel, according to a senior defense official, and the deployment is open-ended. The Marines will not be carrying out a law enforcement role, but it's unclear what their use of force rules are if protesters throw things or spit at them. The new deployment comes after President Donald Trump sent some 2,000 National Guardsmen to the riot-racked city over the weekend. The Marines are from the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines at Twentynine Palms, California. Moments before the deployment, Trump expressed optimism that the situation in Los Angeles is improving. It's now heading in the right direction." The Marine mobilization is sure to draw outcry from liberal critics: California Gov. Gavin Newsom filed suit against the Trump administration on Monday for deploying the Guard. Newsom and the California attorney general claimed Trump and Defense Sec. Pete Hegseth "trampled over" California's sovereignty by calling up the state's National Guard without Newsom's approval. Meanwhile Trump defended the decision on Monday, and added that if protesters spit in the face of guardsmen in Los Angeles, they'll "be hit harder than they have ever been hit before." "IF THEY SPIT, WE WILL HIT," Trump wrote. "Such disrespect will not be tolerated!" Federal law typically bars the U.S. military from carrying out domestic law enforcement purposes, unless the president invokes the Insurrection Act. Newsom claimed Trump is trying to "manufacture a crisis" and that the president is "hoping for chaos so he can justify more crackdowns, more fear, more control." The protests began in reaction to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in the City of Angels as the Trump administration moves to make good on its promise of mass deportations. Over the weekend, protests devolved into violence that left vehicles charred to a crisp and windows smashed at the Los Angeles Police Department headquarters.

British Netflix series Adolescence to be shown in French schools, says minister of education
Following UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcoming plans to air Netflix's hit show Adolescence in secondary schools, France is following suit, with French Minister of Education Élisabeth Borne stating yesterday that the mini-series will be screened from secondary school level upwards. In an interview for LCI news channel, Borne explained that the producer of the series 'gave us the rights' and that the Ministry of Education was therefore going to 'offer five educational sequences for young people based on this series'.These extracts from Adolescence, which have already been shown in British schools to stimulate debate and try to 'prevent young boys from being dragged into a whirlpool of hatred and misogyny,' are 'very representative of the violence that can exist among young people', according to Borne. The aim is to help raise awareness of the problem of 'overexposure to screens and the trivialisation of violence on these social networks,' as well as the spread of masculinist theories and misogyny, argues Borne. The four-part series follows how a father deals with the fallout of his 13-year-old son being suspected of stabbing one of his classmates to death. The decision to show the series in French schools comes after Laëtitia Curetti, who has a 13-year-old son, wrote to Borne and launched an online petition to have the series shown in secondary schools across France. Curetti stated she believes the series could be an 'excellent educational tool' to raise awareness of the dangers of social networking, sexism, bullying and violence in schools. The discussion surrounding knife crime has increased since the success of the series in France. It has been further amplified after a 16-year-old stabbed a high school student to death and injured three other fellow students at the lycée Notre-Dame de Toutes Aides in Nantes on 24 April. "My thoughts go out first to the teenager who lost her life, to the three students who were injured, and I want to express all my support and solidarity to these victims, their families and their loved ones," declared Borne at the school, before paying tribute to the "establishment staff who intervened and neutralized the attacker." French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau spoke of "a tragedy that rocks us." He said he was "appalled" and "shocked" by "the violence that has been unleashed," before adding that the tragic incident was "not a mere news item but a societal issue."
