Dolphins face historic curse bigger than Wayne Bennett
The Wayne Bennett curse is one thing but avoiding a 0-4 start to the season is the immediate item on the Dolphins' agenda ahead of their NRL derby clash with Brisbane.
The Dolphins are winless after three rounds ahead of the "Battle of Brisbane" on Friday night.
Only one side in premiership history has started a season with four consecutive losses and won the title. That was the Newtown side of 1933 and none of those players are alive to tell us how they managed it.
Rugby league historian and statistician David Middleton has provided AAP with compelling statistics which show why an 0-4 start to the season is so hard to recover from.
Only six teams in the NRL era have made the finals after such a dire start - Brisbane (1999), Melbourne (2000), St George-Illawarra (2005), Manly (2009 and and 2021) and Cronulla (2015).
It is worth noting that those sides mostly had a recent history of success or were on the cusp of a title. The Broncos won the premiership in 1998 and 2000. The Storm were coming off a maiden title in 1999. The Sea Eagles were champions in 2008 and the Sharks tasted glory in 2016.
The Dolphins have no such history and only time will tell if they can challenge for a premiership next year.
The Bennett curse has struck all five teams he has left since 2008 with coaches fired after or during the first, second or third seasons. The narrative is persisting under new coach Kristian Woolf.
"It's going to persist while we're not winning and it's going to persist while we don't achieve things as a team," Woolf said.
"You blokes love writing about it when we're not winning and once we're winning, it'll go away, so it'll take care of itself."
There are three key areas the Dolphins must get right to beat the Broncos.
Firstly, the forwards must back up prop Daniel Saifiti and take it to Brisbane as Canberra did a fortnight ago. Saifiti was the only Dolphins forward to run for more than 100m last week in the 30-18 loss to Wests Tigers. It is not good enough.
"That's a big battle this week," Woolf said.
"Their middle forwards are outstanding. (Payne) Haas, (Pat) Carrigan and (Kobe) Hetherington do a really good job.
"We know the challenge and will be up for it.
"We didn't do a lot of running with the footy in the second half last week. That ties into beating ourselves."
Secondly, star fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow must showcase his elite running game, which has so far failed to materialise in 2025.
"It's our responsibility as a team and mine as a coach to make sure we're getting him the ball in good positions," Woolf said.
"We haven't done a great job at that. We've done it in little bits but not consistently.
"He is ready to go and confident like everyone else. He has always got to look for work. We've got to make sure we're creating those opportunities for him."
Thirdly, halves Kodi Nikorima and Isaiya Katoa must step up in the big moments and be backed up when they do.
"I'm not going to put that all on our halves," Woolf said.
"In all the games we've missed opportunities they've created and other blokes haven't quite finished them.
"Once we stop beating ourselves and take the opportunities we're creating, we're going to see results."

Two of the Jacksonville Jaguars' three preseason games will be broadcast live on the NFL Network in August. League-wide, there will be 21 preseason games broadcast nationally on the NFL Network during that three-week span. The Jaguars' first appearance on NFL Network will be in Week 2 when they face the New Orleans Saints at 1:00 PM ET on Sunday, August 17th. The second appearance will be in Week 3 when they are in Miami for a matchup with the Dolphins at 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, August 23rd. As of now, we also know that the Jaguars will have at least one joint practice with the Dolphins prior to the teams' preseason game. Jacksonville Jaguars 2025 preseason schedule Typically, in the preseason, we do not see much action from the starters. But I do wonder if in Year 1 of a new offensive and defensive scheme, if we see a little bit of the first team players in an effort to bank some more live reps before the regular season.

‘I'm built for this.' Dolphins' Patrick Paul confident ahead of first season as starting tackle
A lot will be expected of Patrick Paul in 2025. Not only will he be expected to start for the Dolphins at left tackle, Paul will replace an All-Pro in Terron Armstead who retired in early April. That's no easy task — even as his knees deteriorated more and more towards the end of the 2024 season, Armstead still remained a top-three player at his position, according to Pro Football Focus. So when asked if he actually feels the external pressure associated with his new role, Paul's responded. 'I'm built for this,' the 2024 second-round pick said Tuesday. 'I've always been ready for the moment, and that's why I play football: to compete at the highest level.' Such a response — coupled with reviews from evaluators and players — shows that Paul might in fact be, as he described, 'built for this.' He looks noticeably slimmer. He's a year older. And he's a year wiser. The result is a player who's as confident as ever. Then again, what else could you expect from a guy who has been passed the proverbial torch from a four-time Pro Bowler? 'It's a huge accelerator,' coach Mike McDaniel said Tuesday. 'Coaching can take you so far; there's another level of coaching tied to peer ownership that is a completely different vessel to help a young player. There's a piece of him too – when you have a player like 'T-Stead' invest in you, you want to bear fruit of that investment.' Even Paul's teammates have noticed the changes. 'He's been really consistent in his training, which is really good for a young player,' tackle Austin Jackson said Tuesday. 'Especially for him, last year to this year, he lost a little bit of weight and has still been able to maintain his strength, so that's another big jump that tackles have to adjust to when they come into the league.' Granted, Paul's brief exposure to live NFL reps was somewhat middling. The then-rookie started three games and received a 44.9 grade for the season, per PFF, which ranked 126th at his position. In his defense, however, one such matchup came against the Houston Texans. Still, even in that game Paul showed flashes of brilliance against the elite edge rusher duo of Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson. 'He's enormous,' NFL analyst Brian Baldinger said of Paul, praising the tackle's stamina and strength after breaking down his 2024 film versus the Texans. 'If he gets these sets down, the Dolphins — if they get this offensive line together — all of the speed that they have at all these positions — wide receiver, tight end, running back — it's going to be a good offense.' After an offseason in which Paul made a point to work on his body, dropping from 332 to 320 pounds, in addition to studying the playbook, the left tackle said he feels more mature. The best part? Paul has been able to maintain his strength and speed despite his slimmer frame, something that Jackson alluded to. 'The speed for how big I am — that might throw people off,' Paul said, late adding that he 'matured in my game,' something that just 'comes with time.' Added Paul: 'I think offensive line is an art. As you go day by day, you're just going to keep fine-tuning your skills and one day, it's just going to click, everything that we do day by day is just going to start getting easier. I think I've reached that point where I know what it is, know what they expect from me and I know how to do it daily.' That maturity will be necessary as the Dolphins look to get back on track offensively after a down year in 2024. It won't be easy – Paul will be one of three new starters along the offensive line – but the Dolphins have time to get that chemistry together.

Dolphins destroy Dragons in record-breaking win
The Dolphins have rocketed into the top eight for the first time this year with a 56-6 demolition of St George Illawarra on what is officially known as Queensland Day. That could easily be rebranded Dolphins Day on the back of another scintillating display by halfback Isaiya Katoa. The Dolphins started the season 0-4 but head coach Kristian Woolf kept true to his systems and did not panic. The so-called 'Wayne Bennett curse' has been spooked into oblivion. The only downside for the Dolphins, now in seventh on the ladder, was a knee injury to forward Max Plath on his return from a foot issue. The opening 40 minutes on Friday night was a pure rugby league clinic as the home side rocketed to a 28-2 halftime lead at Suncorp Stadium. The second half was just as good. The forwards and backs were punishing in defence, halves Kodi Nikorima and Katoa combined in a masterclass and to a man the Dolphins played scintillating attacking rugby league. The diabolical Dragons simply had no answer. The Dolphins had their previous biggest winning margin over St George Illawarra in a 38-0 victory last year but this record breaker was another level, surpassing the 44 points they had notched on two previous occasions. When second-rower Connelly Lemuelu stormed over for his second try four minutes after the break Nikorima and Katoa had two try assists each. Fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow then put the nail in the Dragons' coffin for a runaway try in combination with centre Jake Averillo, who was brilliant with three try assists. Katoa landed a 40/20 and then laid on a try for winger Jamayne Isaako's second try. Dolphins hitman Felise Kaufusi set the scene early with a back slam on centre Valentine Holmes to dislodge the ball. From that moment the Dolphins dominated. Grab your popcorn because the Dolphins are putting on a SHOW! 🍿#NRLDolphinsDragons — NRL (@NRL) June 6, 2025 The depth of the Dolphins' attacking line was a sight to behold and it was star centre Herbie Farnworth who crossed for his 50th career try in the 11th minute after a sweeping right to left play. Winger Jamayne Isaako added a second in the right corner after a mirror image play for a 10-2 lead. Katoa was pivotal in both by going deep into the line to create space. He then beat three men and Nikorima raced away to score. A towering bomb by Katoa was expertly snaffled by Lemuelu for a 22-2 lead. Dolphins winger Jack Bostock haunted opposite number Nathan Lawson, the former Australian rugby sevens Olympian. Bostock smashed Lawson in one huge hit and then leapt above him to score after a Nikorima bomb. The Dragons lost winger Christian Tuipulotu to a hamstring injury in the first half on his return from the same complaint while forward Raymond Faitala-Mariner left the field in the second half with shortness of breath.
