London's secret wartime tunnels are set to draw tourists with a spy museum and underground bar

LONDON (AP) — There is a history-rich part of London that few people have seen, where the city braced for the Blitz, James Bond's creator got inspiration and secret Cold War messages passed between Washington and Moscow.
It's a network of tunnels 100 feet (30 meters) below the streets that was secret for decades — but could be the city's next big tourist destination. Local authorities have approved plans to fill the 90,000 square-foot (8,400 square-meter) site with an intelligence museum, an interactive World War II memorial and one of the world's deepest underground bars.
'It's an amazing space, an amazing city,' said Angus Murray, chief executive of The London Tunnels, as subway trains rattled overhead. 'And I think it tells a wonderful story.'
A vast bomb shelter
The tunnels lie directly below London Underground's Central Line in the city's Holborn area. Work to dig them began in secret in 1940, when Britain feared invasion by Nazi Germany. They were designed to shelter up to 8,000 people in a pair of parallel tunnels 16½ feet (5 meters) wide and 1,300 feet (400 meters) long.
The tunnels were never used for that purpose; by the time they were finished in 1942 the worst of the Blitz was over, and Underground bosses had opened up subway stations as air raid shelters for Londoners.
Instead, the tunnels became a government communications center and a base for the Special Operations Executive, a clandestine unit that sent agents — many of them women — on perilous sabotage missions in Nazi-occupied territory under orders from Prime Minister Winston Churchill to 'set Europe ablaze.'
A naval officer named Ian Fleming was a liaison officer to the SOE, and the subterranean HQ may have provided inspiration for the world of secret agent 007 that he went on to create.
'This truly is the Q Branch of James Bond,' said Murray, referring to the thrillers' fictional MI6 quartermaster and gadget-maker.
After the war, more tunnels were added to the complex and the site became a secure telephone exchange. From the mid-1950s it was a terminus of the first trans-Atlantic undersea telephone cable. After the Cuban Missile Crisis brought the world to the brink of nuclear war in 1962, a 'red telephone' hotline between the Pentagon and the Kremlin was established and ran through here.
Up to 200 people worked underground, bound to secrecy but with the compensation of an onsite canteen and bar. For a time, the site also housed a bunker to be used by the government in the event of nuclear war.
By the 1980s, technology had moved on and British Telecom moved out. The tunnels lay largely forgotten until BT sold them in 2023 to Murray's private equity-backed group.
Plans include a memorial to the more than 40,000 civilians killed by German bombing in the war, cultural exhibitions and a nightspot that Murray boasts will be 'the deepest bar in the world in a city.'
Secret wartime history
It also will house Britain's Military Intelligence Museum, which is currently tucked away on a military base north of London with limited public access. Museum bosses have agreed to move a collection covering more than 300 years of history to the tunnels, bringing a much higher profile for a story they believe needs to be told.
'It's not targeted at people who already have an interest in military topics,' said the chair of the museum's board of trustees, who gave only his first name, Alistair, because of the museum's connection to Britain's armed forces.
'A heavy theme that will run through the new museum is that there are skills and tools that military intelligence has developed over years and centuries … and the fundamental one is, how do you tell truth from lies?' he said. 'That's a very big theme of now.'
The museum also will flesh out the secret story of the Special Operations Executive. The museum's collection contains agent messages, supplies, weapons and sabotage equipment from the SOE's wartime adventures.
'Most of the people that worked in SOE never talked about it, either at the time or afterwards, and many of the records have disappeared,' Alistair said. 'So a lot is known about SOE, but we don't know everything, and the chances are we will never know everything.'
A unique attraction
For now, the tunnel entrance is through an unmarked door in an alley, and walking the cool, dim corridors brings the thrill of discovering a hidden corner of history. Within the thick steel and concrete walls are chunky old generators and telecoms equipment, a staff canteen with its kitchen still intact, and the bar, its 1960s orange and brown décor giving off retro 'Austin Powers' vibes
Here and there are graffiti tags and a few items left by urban explorers who snuck in over the years, including a set of bowling pins with ball, and — incongruously — a bear costume.
London Tunnels aims to open in 2028, and to attract up to 4.2 million tourists a year. That may sound ambitious, but Murray says the site's mix of 'history and heritage and novelty' makes it a unique draw.
'If you go home and say, 'I went to this really cool tunnel today,' then we're halfway there,' he said. 'If what's inside of it is even better, you're going to go 'Oh that's fantastic.''

The hottest day of the year so far of 33.2C was recorded on Saturday afternoon in Charlwood, Surrey, and those kind of temperatures brought huge numbers to the country's beaches. Sadly, the sheer multitude of visitors brought the problem of littering, with many reports of rubbish strewn across the sands including broken bottles, discarded food, used nappies - and even a child's mattress. One of the worst affected was Brighton beach in East Sussex, where thousands flocked over the weekend. But one resident and litter picker, Sammie Alpin, 33, said she was left "heartbroken" by the rubbish left on the sea front on Saturday. She posted video and images on her @the_plastic_coast Instagram account showing the state of the beach. They showed bins overflowing with rubbish on to the beach and seagulls picking their way through litter and plastic bags. Plastic bottles, drinks cans, rubber dinghies, flip-flops and even an insulin pen were left abandoned along the pebbles. "What are we teaching the kids of today?" asked Alpin, who makes art from beach litter, in her video, saying that she was left "heartbroken and overwhelmed" by the rubbish. "I knew it would be bad today but it's still heartbreaking every time it happens," she said. "Brighton and Hove have hundreds of bins along the seafront, people just can't be bothered to carry back their rubbish." Her video received a number of comments from angry users, with one saying: "I used to think this was down to a lack of awareness, but it's not an excuse any more. "It's a lazy, selfish act of entitlement. People who just assume someone else will sort it out." Another said: "It's quite embarrassing actually, that this is how the British general public act when the sun comes out. "Every summer it gets like this and every summer I question my choice to live in this city." One user said the situation was similar at Bournemouth beach in Dorset. They said: "Same here in Bournemouth... tourists in their thousands come to our beaches and leave a complete mess behind." Pictures from Bournemouth showed rubbish all along the sea front and overflowing bins. Tom Hayes, the MP for Bournemouth East, posted on X: "Absolutely shocking. Retired Gill Nicholson, 70, said she saw used nappies, broken bottles, rubbish and even an abandoned cot mattress while walking her dog early in the morning near the beach in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. While she said local street cleaners did a good job in cleaning the mess up by the following day, workers nonetheless "have their work cut out". She told Yahoo News UK: "I feel so sorry for the street cleaners. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any enforcement of laws regarding littering throughout the UK. "We live in a wonderful place and we need to protect it." In Wales, visitors to Sandy Bay in Porthcawl on Friday were greeted with lots of litter across the beach, the Valley Times Facebook page reported. On Saturday evening, RNLI Lifeguards Lincolnshire said they were "disappointed" at the litter left on Skegness beach that day, and posted images of the rubbish. In Folkestone, Kent, Facebook user Kathie Peel posted images of litter in the water along the beach. She said: "People who have visited sunny sands today and 'forgotten' to take their rubbish home with them should be ashamed! All along the beach rubbish and dirty nappies in the sea. Absolutely disgusting." Andrea Butcher posted an image on Friday of a rug and other litter left on Formby beach near Liverpool, writing: Free carpet on the beach. I hope today's visitors enjoy sitting in the litter which was left by yesterday's visitors. Perhaps it'll highlight the need to take their rubbish home? Probably not." In March, a report by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) revealed that the amount of plastic rubbish found on UK beaches had increased by 9.5% from 2023 to 2024. It said more than 15,000 volunteers picked up a combine three quarters of a million pieces of litter last year, an average of 170 items per 100m of beach surveyed. It said the most common items were plastic fragments, followed by single-use plastic packaging such as crips packets and sandwich wrappers. The MSC said plastic pollution "remains a huge problem for our marine environment". Plastic items can take hundreds of years to break down and can choke marine animals, with contaminants making wildlife less resilient to the impacts of climate change. The MSC said plastic in the ocean has a "devastating effect" on marine wildlife, as fish, seabirds, sea turtles and mammals can ingest or become entangled in plastic, which causes suffocation, starvation and drowning. It said plastic kills about one million seabirds every year.

The armed forces flag was raised above the town hall to mark the beginning of Armed Forces Week. A short service was held this morning Monday (June 23) in Victoria Square to mark the occasion. Reverend Hannah Lane welcomed the crowd for coming to the short service to mark the start of Armed Forces Week. She said: "During the ceremony, the armed forces flag will be raised above the town hall where it will fly proudly until Saturday evening. "At the same time we will also remember those who have served in the armed services in years gone by with such distinction and sacrifice. "And we will think of our service men and women who are serving now, those currently committed overseas, especially those in active service." The gathered crowd was then invited to take part in a two minute silence to remember all those who have died in service. On Saturday, June 28, the council will hold their annual Armed Forces Day event in Victoria Square from 10.30am to 3.30pm with a short service followed by a family fun day with lots of stalls and free activities, such as paintballing.

Brave passers-by helped rescue staff from a fire at a Birmingham famous curry house by hurling stones to break windows. Video stills showed smoke pouring from Shababs - dubbed the "home of the Birmingham Balti" - after a fryer ignited at the restaurant yesterday morning, Sunday, June 22. One man leapt from the first-floor window to escape the blaze and was taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation and burns at around 11.10am. Witnesses said members of the public threw rocks to shatter the windows before another onlooker fetched a ladder. West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service sent three fire engines to the scene in Birmingham's 'Balti Triangle' and discovered the premises to be "significantly smoke-logged". A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Shortly after 11.10am on Sunday 22 June, we responded to Ladypool Road, Birmingham. "Three fire engines responded, crewed by firefighters from Ladywood, Highgate and Hay Mills stations. "The first crew arrived at the scene within two minutes of being mobilised. "This was a fire, believed to have started accidentally, in a two-storey commercial premises used as a restaurant. Both floors were significantly smoke-logged. "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. "One person was helped to safety by members of the public from the building before we arrived. "They are believed to have been conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital after presenting symptoms of smoke inhalation. "Four members of the public were checked by paramedics for smoke inhalation and were all discharged at the scene. "The final fire crew left this incident at 2.25pm, with police colleagues still in attendance." Shababs opened in 1987 and is one of Birmingham's best-known Balti Triangle restaurants. It featured on BBC2 in April when Michael Portillo paid a visit and has been visited by YouTubers as well and celebrities such as the Hairy Bikers and Joe Lycett.
