Director Sarah Friedland and Actor Kathleen Chalfant on ‘Familiar Touch,' Their Exquisite Portrait of ‘Coming of Old Age'

Writer-director Sarah Friedland remembers her grandmother, a poetry editor, as a 'badass lefty intellectual' who wielded language with precision. When she later developed dementia and became nonverbal, Friedland, then studying dance, was struck by her symphony of movements.
'She would rock and tap certain rhythms and was so physically expressive,' the filmmaker recalls—although by that point, her family had been speaking of her in the past tense. 'That gap between the person that we were describing as no longer there and the person who was very much still in front of me haunted me for many years.'
Friedland has drawn upon those experiences for her tender and heartrending debut feature, Familiar Touch. The film—which premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year, winning best debut, best director, and best actress in the Orizzonti section—explores dementia and identity through Ruth (the regal, luminous Kathleen Chalfant), an octogenarian former cook whose life gently unravels and reconfigures when she moves into assisted living.
Friedland calls it a 'coming of old age' film. 'I wanted to push back against that narrative of decline—the idea that older adults are diminishing,' she says. 'In the coming-of-age film, you see a character change, becoming a new or different version of themselves. There's this idea that our selfhood can shift and yet there's a continuity to it.'
Friedland references the 2013 book Out of Time: The Pleasures and Perils of Ageing and author Lynne Segal's idea of temporal vertigo: 'As we grow older, you can access all of the selves you've been up until that moment. And as such, they kind of mingle and create this sense of vertigo.' Chalfant illustrates this in the film with exquisite subtlety, assuming by turns the disposition of a coy flirt and a take-charge kitchen taskmaster.
A distinguished New York theater actor known for doing Angels in America on Broadway in 1994 and Wit off-Broadway in 1998, Chalfant was drawn to the role after her best friend, playwright Sybille Pearson, began to show signs of dementia seven years ago. 'At the time that I was given Familiar Touch to read, Sybille was in about the same place as Ruth,' Chalfant says. 'So the role was, in a way, a gift to Sybille, but even more, the character of Ruth was Sybille's gift to me. When I saw the movie for the first time, I realized how much of Sybille was on the screen.'

Ralph Lauren Spring 2026 Menswear Collection

Even as the USA's reputational stock falters, global regard for Ralph Lauren—the most all-American of American brands—is on the up: Vogue Business last month reported the company's sales in Europe and China had increased 12 per cent and 9 per cent respectively in the fiscal year 2025. That uptick means that the majority of the company's total $7.1 billion of revenue for the same period was generated beyond the Land of The Free. So during a period where luxury more broadly has also been faltering, how has RL been bucking the trend two-fold? This evening's Ralph Lauren Purple Label pointed to at least part of an answer. Once you'd steered beyond the vintage car in the courtyard, the presentation was split into two sections. The first cluster of looks were garments for an idealized version of the New York Yacht Club: wearable American magic. Navy washed against white on a piped terry boating blazer worn with a bengal stripe shirt and cravat over pleated linen shorts and ankle-strapped espadrilles. A four-button (silver) navy double breasted blazer with ersatz branded club badge was commodore-level quality. Thickly woven textured silk navy short sleeve shirting and drop shoulder color block knits, or classic Ralph (via the Marylebone Cricket Club) cable-knit sweaters all added to the breezy feel. The next section, housed in the brand's Milan palazzo's first-floor courtyard, was a tonal triumph. Of the maybe 25-strong cast of globally-sourced heartthrobs, around 23 wore shades running from the pale khaki of a game-pouched fishing jacket over a safari shirt and action pant to the richly-burnished, nutty brown of a distressed leather flight jacket with complementarily-strapped pilot's watch. From the slubby silk linen windowpane check field jackets to the tailored linen takes on mid-century military shirting via the darker interjections of art-deco intarsia tuxedo jackets, these were clothes for sophisticated yet unstuffy heroes. The jaunty cravats and woven short sleeve shirting recalled Cary Grant as John Robie The Cat; the masterful khakis were slimmed down Hemingway fare for living large on The Keys; and the flight jacket and tux were prime Pitt and Clooney material. Lauren has always said he designs cinematically: this was American luxury that evoked a reassuring, aspirational, and highly-idealized version of its homeland—and which seemed all the more desirable thanks to that vision's current distance from reality.

June 17th, 1994 (2010) June 17, 1994 — a day that will live in infamy. The day began as one of celebration in the sports world. The New York Rangers hosted their victory parade after winning the Stanley Cup. Arnold Palmer played his last round at the U.S. Open. The World Cup kicked off in the U.S. The Houston Rockets and New York Knicks faced off in the NBA Finals. All of those events would have been the top story on any other day but June 17, 1994. That was the day O.J. Simpson was charged with double homicide. Simpson proceeded to flee from the police in his white Bronco. The Simpson story made national headlines, so much so that the police chase interrupted coverage of the NBA Finals. There have been so many Simpson documentaries that cover the case. What happens when two alpinists have kids? Patagonia releases new short film series 'Parenting: Disaster Style' but nervous moms and dads might want to skip this one...

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Patagonia has launched a new short film series: Parenting: Disaster Style and the first episode has just dropped. The series follows the adventures of alpinists Zoe Hart and her husband, Maxime Turgeon, as they introduce their children, Mathias and Mika, to the great outdoors and all things adventure. The series sees the young family go backcountry skiing in Italy, dirtbag along the French coast and cultivate food at their Chamonix home, beneath the watchful Mont Blanc. Hart and Turgeon hope to engender the same love of the natural world and mountain adventure that they enjoy to their kids, while also increasing their resilience and self-belief. Hart says: "if you push your kids past what they think is possible, whether it's being cold or tired or wet, they'll learn they have the capacity to do way more than they thought they could.' Before having kids, in their search for mountain adventure on some of the world's most technical peaks, Hart and Turgeon had endured their fair share of epics and freezing cold nights on some far-flung wall or other. Tongue firmly in cheek, they called their style 'Disaster Alpinism', which is how the series got its name. "Go at it, throw everything into it, it's usually epic and afterwards it's really awesome," says Hart about both alpinism and parenting. Zoe Hart is a Chamonix-based International Mountain Guide originally from the East Coast of the US. A passionate adventurer and mother, she is determined to live life to the limits and strives for never-ending growth. Episode one went live on June 18, introducing the family and their ethos, as they set off on family adventures to climb and enjoy the tranquility of the great outdoors. Watch it here and keep one eye on Patagonia's YouTube channel for future epsidoes.
