The majority of ready-to-eat popcorn, nuts or crisps could be banned from advertising under the UK's upcoming anti-obesity legislation due to their hidden salt content, according to new research.
From October 2025, the government is set to ban junk food adverts from appearing on TV between 5:30am and 9pm.
An analysis of over 1,200 crisps, nuts and popcorn snacks by Action on Salt and Sugar has found that the majority fail to meet the government's criteria due in part to excessive salt and sugars.
Products are classed as junk food under the new law if they are deemed 'High in Fat, Salt, and Sugar' (HFSS) as per the UK Nutrient Profiling Model developed by the Food Standards Agency in 2004. The model assigns a score based on the balance of positive and negative nutrients. If a food scores a four or more it is deemed a HFSS product.
According to the group of experts' research, a staggering 77 per cent of crisps, 56 per cent of nuts, and 88 per cent of popcorn would be scored 'less healthy' under the government's guidelines.
'It's clear that voluntary efforts to improve food nutrition have largely fallen short,' said Sonia Pombo, Head of Impact and Research at Action on Salt.
The Department of Health and social care has said the restrictions are set to be imposed in the hopes it will 'encourage the food industry to change their recipes and provide healthier options'. But campaigners have said the research shows these efforts are already falling short.
Ms Pombo said it was 'about time' the government got tough by creating mandatory, health-related targets with strong enforcement. 'Without this, the UK's hidden salt and sugar crisis will persist, putting consumers at risk and leaving responsible brands at a disadvantage in an uneven marketplace,' she said.
Specialists at the organisation, based at the Wolfson Institute of Public Health at Queen Mary University of London, also found that nearly one in three ready-to-eat popcorn products are saltier than a packet of cheese & onion crisps, with 27 per cent of all of these snacks exceeding the government's voluntary maximum salt targets.
The saltiest popcorn was found to be gourmet brand's Joe & Seph's Sweet & Salty Popcorn, which had 2.25g salt per 100g.
The study also found that 42 per cent of popcorn analysed also had high levels of sugars, with the worst product being Morrisons Market Street Toffee Flavour Popcorn, which had the equivalent of more than seven teaspoons of sugar per serving.
Surprisingly, some 'healthy' crisps were also found to have high levels of salt. Eat Real's chilli and lemon lentil chips had 3.6g of salt per 100g - saltier than the concentration of seawater.
The study also found that many flavoured varieties of nuts are failing to meet healthier standards ahead of the ban - with nearly one in four of these exceeding salt targets.
Dr Pauline Swift, Chair of Blood Pressure UK said: 'Reducing salt isn't just a health recommendation – it's a lifesaving necessity. Excess salt, often hidden in everyday foods, raises blood pressure, which is the leading cause of strokes, heart and kidney disease – all of which is completely avoidable.
'Without urgent action to cut both salt and sugar levels, we're gambling with lives. The government must step up with enforceable targets to protect public health."

And an expert has warned that proper fridge organisation is 'essential' if people want to avoid becoming sick. ‌ The survey, by white goods and tech retailer Currys, was carried out asking 2,000 people about their fridge habits. ‌ And it showed that more than one in five (23 per cent) didn't know that the ideal fridge temperature should be 0-5C, which is the official recommendation of the Food Standards Agency. What's more, 42 per cent admit to not checking their fridge temperature regularly, meaning that potentially millions in the UK are putting themselves at risk of food poisoning. And when it came to storage specifics, 61 per cent said they didn't know that it's not recommended that dairy products, such as milk, are stored in the fridge door as it's typically being the warmest part of the appliance, due to the temperature fluctuating when the door is opened and closed. Additionally, 22 per cent of those questioned also didn't know that raw meat should be kept on the lowest shelf in the fridge, and a third admit to eating meat from the fridge without being 100 percent sure it was safe to consume. In this case men are nearly twice as likely to do so as women, with 41 per cent of men eating meat they didn't know was safe, compared to just 26 per cent of women. ‌ The study also asked UK residents to share their preferred location to store certain consumable items, some of which cause debates. For example, despite the label on tomato ketchups (such as Heinz) stating that once opened it should be 'refrigerated and consumed within eight weeks', 40 per cent of Brits store theirs in a cupboard instead. ‌ The food people are most confused about when it comes to proper storage turned out to be eggs. Looking at Google searches in the UK, there are over 31,000 searches for 'should I keep eggs in the fridge', up 26 per cent compared to last survey revealed that 43 per cent of Brits store their eggs outside of the fridge, with 27 per cent storing them straight on the countertop and 16 per cent choosing to keep them in the cupboard. According to the Food Standards Agency, people should 'Store eggs in a cool, dry place, ideally in the fridge and keep them apart from other foods.' As the temperature of the kitchen varied depending on weather, and if cooking appliances were being used, storing eggs on the counter could be putting their quality at risk. ‌ Working with Currys, Dr. Helen Onyeaka, an Associate Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, specialising in microbiology and sustainable food systems, shared her tips for safer food storage. Dr Onyeaka said: "To ensure food safety and minimise contamination risks, proper organisation and storage are essential." Here's her tips to reorganise your fridge safely: ‌ Top Shelf This is where you should store ready-to-eat foods such as leftovers, cooked meals, and packaged dairy products. This reduces the risk of contamination from raw foods below. Middle Shelf Suitable for dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt, as these require consistent cold temperatures. ‌ Bottom Shelf This is the coldest area, ideal for raw meat, poultry, and fish. Always store these items in sealed, leak-proof containers to prevent raw juices from contaminating other foods. Crisper drawers Designed for fruits and vegetables. Keep fruits and vegetables in separate drawers to prevent ethylene gas emitted by fruits from speeding up vegetable spoilage. Fridge door The warmest area, suitable for condiments, sauces, and beverages.

How can you make sure your sunscreen is 'reef safe'?

Sunscreen is the must have summer holiday item, but while it may protect your skin, there's growing research it could be harming the ocean and marine life. Each year, about 14,000 tonnes of sunscreen ends up in the sea this way, threatening the health of marine life and coral reefs. It's led to many people buying 'reef safe' sunscreen but there is currently no regulation of these products. Now, a group of researchers from the University of Derby want to change that with proper accreditation of reef safe sunscreen that could be regulated globally. So which sunscreen should you use to protect your skin and the ocean? How does sunscreen harm coral reefs? When we swim or shower, sunscreen can wash off our skin and enter waterways. Each year, about 14,000 tonnes of sunscreen ends up in the sea this way, threatening the health of marine life and coral reefs. As the sunscreen breaks down, the coral absorbs these chemicals and it can harm its reproduction and growth and contribute to bleaching. "It just directly kills it as well," Professor Michael Sweet from the University of Derby told ITV News. "Sometimes in the tests we've undertaken, we put the sunscreen in the water and within a few hours you can see tissue completely sloughing off the coral skeleton." What is the 'toxic' sunscreen? Oxybenzone and octinoxate are chemical compounds found in many common sunscreens and are known to have a more significant impact on coral health. Sunscreen containing these ingredients is often dubbed 'toxic'. While oxybenzone is approved globally as a sunscreen ingredient, it has been banned in seven places including Hawaii, the US Virgin Islands and parts of Thailand in a bid to reduce the impact on reefs. What sunscreen should I buy? Several sunscreen companies market their products as 'reef safe' or 'reef friendly', but there is no regulation of these claims so you'll have to check the ingredient list on the packaging. It's best to look for mineral active ingredients, like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and to avoid any products containing oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene. Lotions are also better for the environment than spray or mist products, as the aerosol particles often end up on the sand and washed out to sea . The other option is to wear your SPF protection instead. Swim shirts and rash vests protect your skin from UV and can last longer than a bottle of sunscreen. How would 'reef safe' regulation work? Professor Sweet said 80 per cent of sunscreen marked as 'reef safe' had never been tested. He said it was very difficult to actually determine whether a product is 'reef safe' from ingredients alone and the industry needed "a shake up". Researchers at the University of Derby want to create a Reef Protection Factor (RPF) certification to help people buy products - including sunscreen, cosmetics and surf wax - that have been proven to be safe for use in the ocean. Under the proposal, products would have to have undergone rigorous testing with adult corals at an accredited independent testing centre to receive RPF creditation. If there was any evidence of tissue loss in any of the coral tested, the product would not pass and could not be branded 'reef-safe'. The university has developed a facility that can test a sunscreen's impact on coral and have used that to create their own reef-safe sunscreen. Professor Sweet said there should be a visible reef safe trademark on items so consumers could easily identify safe products on the shelf. "Bronze standard is as good as nothing in the water, silver means you're having a positive impact to some degree but gold is your gold standard where you're having a clear positive impact," he said. "In the concept of things like climate change, many people would say it's a relatively small drop in the ocean. "But it's something that in theory that we can change overnight."
