Premier League manager begged to end contract after realising 'this isn't for me'

Daily Mirror02-05-2025

Ruud Gullit has recalled being "begged" to stay at Newcastle United despite his falling-out with Alan Shearer.
The Dutch icon made the controversial decision to bench club legend Shearer for a game against local rivals Sunderland early in the 1999/00 season, a move that caused uproar among fans.
Fellow forward Duncan Ferguson was also left out of the starting line-up. Newcastle were defeated 2-1 despite Kieran Dyer's early goal, with Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips turning the game around in the second half.
This match marked Gullit's final act as Magpies manager as he stepped down soon after, clearing the path for Sir Bobby Robson's arrival.
Gullit knew his days on Tyneside were numbered when Sunderland took the lead. He told Stick to Football:"We were 1-0 up against Sunderland and it was raining like hell.
"And then in one moment, they had a pass up front and the ball went in the pond, everybody went past it, and then they chipped it out over the goalkeeper. Then you feel, 'OK, this is maybe not for me'."
Despite a torrid start to that season, the board pleaded for him to stay. He explained: "I went to the board, and I said, 'Look, I don't think this is for me' – and they begged me to stay. Freddy Shepherd [chairman] and I became friends because of that.
"I said to him, 'Look, I don't need the money. I just want to end the contract, I'm very thankful for what I could do, but this is not for me. This is not the way to do it'.
"I knew that I could not change the environment in that moment. I was right, because later, they were relegated. I knew exactly what was going on, but I didn't have the power to change that.
"Alan Shearer, in that moment, he was not doing the things that we needed him to do to play, and he understood that as well. Alan is a great striker – I needed him to do a little bit different to make it work.
"He was not informed well of the tenacity that I had, from the beginning – maybe that was my fault because I had to talk with him more and tell him what I really needed."
However, Gullit remains fond of the club and was delighted to see them win the Carabao Cup recently. He added: "The biggest problem [with Newcastle] is, not everybody wants to go there," he said.
"The biggest success they had was when Kevin Keegan was there. That was the best team they had – didn't win it [the league], but now they've won a trophy, I'm so happy for them."

Parky influence hailed by Wrexham executive director Ker

Parkinson was appointed by co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as the Reds' manager in July 2021 and in his four years at the helm, he has led Wrexham to three promotions. Speaking to Gabby Logan and Mark Chapman on The Sports Agents podcast, Wrexham executive director Ker said: 'He's been extraordinary and I think, again, people point to our success and there's, obviously, lots of debate about 'oh, have you thrown a lot of money? Have you done this, that and the other?'. 'I think the single greatest thing we did was hire Phil and say you're in charge. 'It's quite an old-fashioned way of doing things. We don't have a director of football. 'We don't have a head of data, a head of scouting, a head of this, that and the other. You're the manager. You're in charge.' The Wrexham story is now a prominent one around the world, thanks to the success of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary. Currently screening its fourth season, a further year has been commissioned when Wrexham take their place in the Championship, with viewers and fans being taken for more fly-on-the-wall peaks inside the changing room. While viewers have got used to these behind-the-scenes views, Ker says that Parkinson also has his say on what is filmed for the documentary. He added: 'He has complete carte blanche to turn them (cameras) away. 'But, also, he's come to understand, you know, I think at the start he was probably a little bit reluctant and you've seen the documentary. 'He has a long conversation with Rob, where I think Rob did impress upon him, you know, this is not like Sunderland 'Til I Die, because, actually, we control the cameras. 'So, you're not going to be made to look like a wally. You're not going to get egg on your face. 'We're not going to be intruding... and it's become this extraordinary situation where I think the relationship between Rob and Ryan and Phil, and our players, and dare I say myself and Rob and Ryan, and the players and Phil, we're all so, so close. 'It's a very stable environment. It's very rare, I think, for a manager to operate with as little peril as Phil has done over the last four years. 'There's, like, no point when we've had bad runs, where there's been anything approaching pressure.'

Key Rangers backroom team member leaves club by ‘mutual agreement'

ON GER WAY Key Rangers backroom team member leaves club by 'mutual agreement' RANGERS assistant coach Issame Charai is leaving the Ibrox club. The 43-year-old joined the Gers coaching staff in January of this year, following a spell as the manager of the Morocco Under-23 team. Charai was appointed assistant manager by Philippe Clement after experienced Dutch coach Andries Ulderink had quit for family reasons. When the Belgian boss was sacked in February, Charai remained in post as Barry Ferguson was named as interim head coach. Ferguson brought in fellow Rangers heroes Neil McCann, Allan McGregor and Billy Dodds with him but all four were relieved of their duties at the end of the season ahead of the American takeover of the club. Since then, Russell Martin has been unveiled as the 20th permanent manager in the Light Blues' history. The former Scotland international started work as head coach this week, with long-time right-hand man Matt Gill joining as assistant coach. That effectively meant there was no place for Charai and Rangers confirmed tonight that he has moved on. More to follow.
