Kaʻahumanu St, from Downtown Honolulu to Pearl City
HONOLULU (KHON2) — In the ahupuaʻa of Waiau, which lies in the moku of ʻEwa here on Oʻahu, stands a roadway named in honor of King Kamehameha's favorite wife. We are speaking of Kaʻahumanu St.
Born to chiefly parents in Hāna, Maui, Kaʻahumanu grew up to become one of the most powerful of her time.
The Queen honored via the busy Queen St
She was taken by Kamehameha as his wife in 1785 prior to his unification of the Hawaiian Islands.
Her father, Keʻeaumoku, stated to the future King that the only person strong enough to rebel against him was Kaʻahumanu.
Because of this fear, Kamehameha had declared a law that any man who were to sleep with her would be killed.
Following the King's death, Queen Kaʻahumanu became the first Kuhina Nui, or co-ruler of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
The Kaʻahumanu Street of today is not the first as many of the earliest Honolulu streets are no longer. Can you imagine where I now stand used to be the intersection of Merchant and Kaʻahumanu Streets once upon a time?
What was the center of Honolulu's business district during the monarchy? Kaʻahumanu Street played a significant role.
Known previously as Beef Lane or Kaukau Lane, native markets line the street along with shipping trade merchants.
Hawaiians called it Pipi kaula, meaning 'jerked beef,' Naʻau puaʻa, meaning 'pig intestines,' and Naʻau kakemeaning 'sausage.'
It wasn't until August 30, 1850, when the name Kaʻahumanu was chosen by the Privy Council.
It was then that a total of thirty-five streets received their official names.

Atlantic hurricane season begins
The Atlantic Basin hurricane season began June 1. The Atlantic Basin includes the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf and the Caribbean. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its forecast for the upcoming season, which runs through November 30. They are predicting 13 to 19 named storms, six to 10 of which may become hurricanes. Forecasters are predicting a 60 percent chance of an above-average season. The development zones for tropical development are typically the Gulf, down into the Caribbean between the Yucatan and Cuba, and the Eastern seaboard. Here's a look at the names for the 2025 Atlantic Basin hurricane season: The prediction of an above-average season has to do with ENSO-neutral conditions expected, along with an enhancement in the West African monsoon. They're also expecting above-average sea-surface temperatures and weaker wind shear in the development zones. This helps aid in tropical cyclone development. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. MCDONALD CO., Mo. — One McDonald County road is closing as part of a bridge construction project. Starting Monday, Slinkard Road just off of Missouri Route 90, east of Jane will close to traffic so contractor crews can install pipe and base rock. MoDOT expects the road to be closed from Monday June 2 to Wednesday June 4. While work is being done, drivers will be directed along a signed detour of McDonald County Route K, Business 71, County Route H and I-49. Signs and message boards will also alert drivers approaching the work zone. The work is part of a 2.3 million dollar project to replace the current one-lane bridge over Little Sugar Creek on Route 90, with a new two-lane bridge, guardrails, barrier walls and permanent striping.
