Court grants bail to Hamid Engineer in March 17 riots case
Nagpur: A sessions court here on Monday granted
conditional bail
to
Hamid Engineer
, a local political activist and founder of
Minorities Democratic Party
(MDP), in the case relating to inciting
communal violence
through social media posts before the March 17 riots in Mahal.
Additional sessions judge NB Ojha approved the bail on a surety of Rs50,000. As part of the conditions, the 69-year-old accused is barred from leaving the country and is ordered to report to the Cyber police station in Sadar every Tuesday and Friday at 11 am. He is also required to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.
Police charged Engineer, whose full name is Mohammad Hamid Mohammad Hanif, under sections related to sedition and rioting, citing his alleged role in provoking tensions that escalated during a protest seeking the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's tomb. His arrest followed that of Mohammad Shehzad Parvez Mohammad Ibrahim (45), also from Nagpur, in connection with the same case.
According to police officials, Engineer's speeches and online posts were a catalyst for the unrest. Investigators claim he maintained close ties with Fahim Khan, MDP's Nagpur city president and one of the main accused in the case. The Cyber police allege that both individuals used inflammatory rhetoric to deepen communal divisions.

Engineer, a retired public works department employee, rose to prominence in 2002 after leading a mosque control dispute in Mominpura, where he challenged the Tablighi Jamaat's authority and championed Barelvi Sunni practices. Known for his Sufi-leaning politics and community activism, he has remained a controversial figure in the city's minority politics.
His counsel, advocate Ashwin Ingole, filed the bail application. The police earlier opposed bail, asserting the need for further custodial interrogation. After the investigating officer failed to appear in the previous hearing, the court granted final opportunity for argument on April 21 before pronouncing its decision.

City shift: Housing ministry lays roadmap for Smart Cities SPVs beyond mission deadline; new advisory proposes five-pronged role in urban development
The ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Tuesday issued a detailed advisory to repurpose the Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) created under the Smart Cities Mission , aiming to leverage their institutional capacity for long-term urban transformation even after the scheme's closure on March 31. The advisory encourages states and Union Territories to identify pressing urban development priorities and assign new strategic roles to the SPVs, which were originally formed to plan and execute city-level infrastructure projects under the 2015 Smart Cities Mission. According to the ministry, the SPVs will now be guided to operate in five broad domains: technology support, project implementation, consulting, research and assessment, and investment facilitation. These areas reflect an effort to integrate SPVs more closely with ongoing state and city development agendas. The government noted that over the past decade, Smart Cities SPVs have demonstrated their ability to deliver complex, cross-sectoral projects with efficiency and innovation. The ministry also highlighted the investments made in establishing Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs), which have played a key role in urban governance and data-driven decision-making. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dermatologist: Just Add 1 Drop Of This Household Item To Any Dark Spot And Wait 3 Minutes Dark Spot Corrector With the Smart Cities Mission officially concluded, the Centre's move to repurpose SPVs is aimed at sustaining the momentum of urban innovation and reinforcing the technical and managerial capacity of Urban Local Bodies. KCR to appear before Ghose panel today
Hyderabad: In a major development in the ongoing investigation into the Kaleswaram Lift Irrigation Project, former chief minister and BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao is scheduled to appear before the Justice PC Ghose Commission on Wednesday. Ahead of his deposition, KCR held a crucial meeting on Tuesday with former irrigation minister T Harish Rao at his Erravalli farmhouse. According to sources, Harish Rao—who appeared before the commission on June 9—engaged in a five-hour discussion with KCR on Monday to brief him on the commission's inquiries and to strategise appropriate responses. The two leaders met again on Tuesday to further deliberate on key issues expected to be raised during the hearing, fine-tune their replies, and chart both legal and political strategies. Reports suggest that the discussions also included a review of alleged deficiencies flagged in the vigilance and National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) reports related to the project's key barrages—Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla. The meeting has assumed considerable political significance, especially with former minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy also attending. His presence has further fuelled speculation around the BRS's internal deliberations ahead of KCR's testimony. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Good News: You May Be Richer Than You Think Undo The Ghose commission is investigating serious allegations of construction lapses and financial irregularities in the Kaleswaram project.
