All-Omani team shows promising signs in hard-fought T20 series

Times of Oman21-05-2025

MUSCAT: A determined All-Omani Development Team came close to pulling off a remarkable series win against the visiting Bahraini National Team in a recently concluded three-match T20 series at the Oman Cricket Academy ground in Al Amerat.
Despite losing the series 2-1, the all-Omani side earned praise for their resilience, growing maturity, and ability to compete until the very last ball.
For a team built entirely around domestic talent, the performances were a sign of exciting progress in Oman's cricketing pipeline.
Head coach of the team, Prashanth Chandran said: 'As the coach of the All-Omani Development Team, I'm incredibly proud of the players' mindset and their eagerness to learn.'
He added: 'Despite their limited cricketing experience and match practice, they showed tremendous grit and competed hard in all three games against Bahrain."
Chandran said: "The final match, taken down to the very last ball, was a true display of their fighting spirit and desire to win. With structured training and consistent match exposure, I firmly believe this team has the potential to develop into a highly competitive unit that can make Oman proud on the regional and continental stage.'
The three-match series offered a range of challenges for the Omani side, but they responded with character.
The opening game was a close-fought contest, with Bahrain setting a modest target of 144/8, thanks to tight bowling spells from Faris Khalid Al Balushi (2/12) and Shoaib Ismail Al Balushi (2/18). Oman fell just short in the chase, finishing at 135/7 despite a well-constructed 56 from Sufyan Mehmood and a steady 34 from Shoaib.
The second match saw the hosts come roaring back with a high-scoring win. Batting first, Oman posted a commanding 188/4, led by a fluent 61 from Shoaib and a powerful 50 from Mohammed Al Balushi. Bahrain responded with a spirited chase but were stopped at 185/7, with Faris once again impressing with the ball, claiming four crucial wickets.
With the series level at 1-1, the decider turned out to be a nail-biter. Oman put up 165/6 on the board, built around Majid Al Balushi's 40 and another solid knock by Mohammed (27).
Defending the total, Rashad Al Balushi nearly turned the tide with a devastating spell of 5/12. However, Bahrain's Abdulla Parvej played a match-winning hand, scoring 97 runs and steering his team to victory by just one wicket off the final delivery.
While the result may not have gone in Oman's favour, the series featured a number of standout performances.
Bahrain's Abdulla Parvej topped the run charts with 127 runs, including his match-winning 97 in the final encounter.
For Oman, Shoaib Ismail Al Balushi impressed with a total of 118 runs across the three games, closely followed by Sufyan Mehmood, who amassed 115 runs.
On the bowling front, Faris Khalid Al Balushi led the charge for Oman with seven wickets, while Rashad Al Balushi made a major impact with his five-wicket haul in the final game.
The series offered a valuable glimpse into the potential that lies within the country's domestic circuit.
Brief scores:
1st T20 match: Bahraini National Team 144/8 (Faris Khalid Al Balushi 2/12, Shoaib Ismail Al Balushi 2/18) beat Oman Development Team 135/7 (Sufyan Mehmood 56 (47), Shoaib Ismail Al Balushi 34 (31).
2nd T20 match: Oman Development Team 188/4 (Shoaib Ismail Al Balushi 61 (39), Mohammed Al Balushi 50 (30)) beat Bahrain National Team 185/7 (Faris Khalid Al Balushi 4/38, Sufyan Mehmood 0/26).

Oman hopes for direct World Cup spot dashed as Jordan win 3-0 in Muscat

MUSCAT- A dominating Jordan outplayed hosts Oman 3-0 in their penultimate AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to 26 Group B tie at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Thursday. The defeat ended Rasheed Jaber-coached Red Warriors' hopes of a direct spot from the group as the top two would seal the berth. With just one game remaining, Oman, now at 10 points, can manage only three more points, which would not be enough to even keep the third spot as they are now fourth. South Korea lead the standings and have qualified with 17 points while Jordan after the win are second at 16. Iraq are third with 13 and the match between Jordan and Iraq in Amman on 10 June will decide the second team from the group to seal the spot. Oman take on Palestine in their final game of the round on 10 June with Palestine at fifth spot with seven points. Kuwait are at bottom with six points. Jordan will remain in pole position against Iraq as they only have to avoid defeat to advance. Jordan's win against Oman was marked by Ali Olwan's hat-trick. At the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, both sides tested each other in the first 10 minutes, and Oman captain and keeper Faiz Al Rusheidi had his first shot of adrenaline when Mousa Al Ta'mari put the ball past him in the 11th minute only for the Ligue 1 midfielder to be ruled offside. The hosts' slow and steady build-up was hampered by poor finishing, with Abdul Al Mushaifri and Harib Al Saadi both fluffing their shots in the 15th and 19th minutes respectively. Issam Al Sabhi then had a golden opportunity to put Oman ahead, but his close range shot in the 24th minute was resolutely palmed away by keeper Yazeed Abulaila. A brilliant through ball from Al Saadi from his own half in the 31st minute found Al Sabhi, who controlled the pass with his first touch but then stumbled under pressure in the box. Jordan, who only had two shots at goal in regulation, were awarded a penalty five minutes into time added on after a VAR review found Mohannad Taha had been brought down, with Olwan duly converting to give his side the advantage going into the break. It got even better for Jordan six minutes into the second half as a quick break saw Olwan getting his second when he side-footed home Yazan Al Naimat's pass from the left beyond the reach of a diving Al Rusheidi. Olwan completed his hat-trick in the 64th minute when he gleefully put the ball into an empty net after Al Rusheidi was caught off-position on the right by Al Ta'mari's pass. Oman made five substitutions but it proved a little too late and the West Asians will have to give it their all in their final match against Palestine on Tuesday.

First fully indoor, multi-range shooting complex opens

Muscat: A state-of-the-art indoor shooting complex — touted as the first-of-its kind not just in Oman but across the wider region —has officially opened its doors in Muscat, ushering in a new era for recreational and professional marksmanship in the Sultanate. Named Action Point, the facility offers a rare and highly specialised combination of 25-metre, 50-metre, and 100-metre shooting ranges along with a fully indoor shotgun skeet and trap range — an extraordinary setup made even more remarkable by the fact that all ranges are fully air-conditioned and housed under one roof. This unique private complex is located at the Active Oman Centre (Oman Automobile Association) and promises to cater to first-time shooters, seasoned enthusiasts, and tactical professionals in an environment that is immersive, safe and technologically advanced. The facility was inaugurated recently under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports, and Youth. Developed and delivered by the Special Projects Division of Khimji Ramdas (KR) in partnership with Cubic Technologies Singapore PTE LTD — a global name in advanced defence training systems —Action Point marks a significant milestone for shooting sports and security training infrastructure in Oman. 'This is more than just a facility — it's an experience that combines adrenaline, precision, and professionalism,' said Col (Retd) Nasser bin Ali Al Amri, General Manager of Action Point. 'Through our collaboration with Khimji Ramdas and Cubic Defence, we've brought international-level shooting disciplines to Oman with the highest standards of safety and supervision. Our aim is to nurture responsible firearms sportsmanship and create an atmosphere where people feel both inspired and secure.' The sprawling complex includes two 25-metre pistol ranges equipped with retrievable targets for 9mm handguns, two 50-metre tactical ranges featuring advanced Location of Miss and Hit (LOMAH) systems, and a 100-metre rifle range tailored for 5.56mm calibre firearms. But what truly elevates Action Point to a class of its own is its fully indoor shotgun skeet and trap range — an exceedingly rare feature even by global standards. An air gun range is also under development, further expanding the facility's appeal to a broad spectrum of users. In terms of technology, each range is equipped with smart bullet traps that safely direct fired projectiles into specialised collection channels. Complementing these are electronic target systems that offer real-time feedback, enabling more accurate assessment and training. A specially engineered air purification system ensures that dust and gases generated during live firing are swiftly removed, maintaining a safe and clean indoor environment. The facility has been thoughtfully designed to cater to a diverse clientele. From beginners trying their hand at shooting for the first time to competitive marksmen training for international tournaments, Action Point offers tailored packages and supervised sessions. It also supports the tactical training needs of private security personnel and government agencies, ensuring wide-ranging utility. Every visitor is given a thorough safety briefing upon arrival and is continuously supervised by qualified instructors, reflecting the facility's unwavering focus on professionalism and best practices. Omani talent has been a central part of the project's success. In coordination with the Ministry of Labour, Action Point recruited and trained Omani jobseekers — men and women alike — who underwent intensive instruction from global experts. This localisation strategy has not only created jobs but also developed a skilled cadre of personnel capable of managing and operating a high-spec, internationally aligned shooting facility. Speaking at a recent media tour of the facilities, Varun Pankaj Khimji, Director of Khimji Ramdas LLC, said, 'We are proud to support Action Point's mission of enhancing responsible firearms sporting in the region. This project reflects our commitment to delivering turnkey, high-performance solutions that support national training infrastructure and innovation. The facility is another example of the vision and capability of our Special Projects Division.' Rajneesh Armugham, General Manager – Special Projects at Khimji Ramdas, said: 'We are proud to have delivered this sophisticated training facility that not only meets international safety and operational standards but also showcases our division's capability in managing complex, defence-aligned infrastructure projects. Our collaboration with Cubic Defence has brought cutting-edge technology into Oman, and we're confident Action Point will become a go-to destination for hobbyists, competition shooters, and private security agencies alike.' The KR Special Projects Division will also continue to support the facility over the next two years through a comprehensive technical support and maintenance contract, ensuring operational continuity and sustained quality through a dedicated in-house team. Open to individuals aged 16 and above, Action Point welcomes private enthusiasts, corporate teams, educational institutions, and government organisations with tailored offerings. The facility is expected to host regional tournaments in the near future, positioning Oman as a hub for competitive shooting and sport. With its exceptional mix of features, world-class equipment, and climate-controlled indoor design, Action Point is not just a first for Oman — it's a regional trailblazer in modern recreational shooting. The facility is open daily from 8:00am to 10:00pm, Sunday to Saturday.
