Carnival Cruise Line to launch new year-round cruise port
Cruise travelers in one region of the U.S. will soon have the opportunity to cruise year-round from one convenient cruise port.
Carnival Cruise Line is bringing its cruise operations back to pre-pandemic levels in one port city after running a successful seasonal schedule there for the last few years.The port will join the bigger cruise hubs of New Orleans, Galveston, Texas, and Tampa, Fla. in offering Caribbean getaways from the Gulf Coast all year long beginning in 2027.
For many cruisers who live in southern states and prefer to drive to their cruise departure port, the expansion of Carnival's Gulf Coast cruise offerings is exciting news.Carnival will expand its cruise schedule from Mobile, Alabama beginning in spring 2027, bringing back year-round sailings that the cruise line hasn't offered from the port since prior to the pandemic. Carnival Spirit currently sails a seasonal schedule from Mobile that has been very popular with Gulf Coast cruisers.
'This is a testament to our relationship with Carnival and the incredible effort the staff at the Mobile Alabama Cruise Terminal put in to making sure every passenger that comes through Mobile has an exceptional experience,' the City of Mobile wrote in a Facebook post about the news.
In a video posted on Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald's Facebook page, Carnival President Christine Duffy revealed that the cruise line shared the news with Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson on his birthday.With demand high for Carnival's seasonal cruises from Mobile, Mayor Stimpson and city officials have been eager to expand cruise operations from the port with Carnival, or even bring another cruise line to fill the vacancy during the months when Carnival Spirit wasn't sailing from Mobile.
The city recently added a new gangway at the cruise terminal to improve the passenger embarkation experience and has even been exploring plans to increase parking capacity to allow the port to accommodate a second cruise ship. City officials have been in talks with both Norwegian Cruise Line and Margaritaville at Sea about the possibility of sending a ship to Mobile.Along with increasing its sailings from Mobile, Carnival also plans to up its capacity in the mid-Atlantic region by moving a larger Conquest class ship to Baltimore in 2027.
Expanding operations in both Mobile and Baltimore demonstrate Carnival's commitment to serving its secondary markets outside of major cruise hubs like Port Canaveral, Florida, Miami and Galveston, Texas. The cruise line is dedicated to remaining an accessible vacation option for 50 percent of the U.S. population that is within a five-hour drive of a Carnival cruise departure port.
Carnival also reinforced this commitment by increasing its cruise operations from Norfolk, Va. in February, bumping the port up from seasonal to year-round sailings just like it now plans to do in Mobile.
More Carnival cruise news:Although the focus on these smaller markets is welcome news to many loyal Carnival cruisers, many would also like to see the cruise line turn its attention to smaller ships as it plans for the future rather continuing the megaship trend.
Along with sharing deployment updates, Carnival just announced new details on its upcoming Excel class megaships and plans for even bigger ships to come. After the cruise line's brand ambassador shared new ship news on his Facebook page, a number of passengers posted pleas for smaller ships.
'John Heald, please note how many of us want smaller ships,' Stephanie Traver Gaida commented. 'Not everyone loves the big ships: too crowded, too noisy, lack of personal service.'

Liquor license suspended at last Bobcat Bonnie's location
Bobcat Bonnie's has a new issue with its final location revolving around Michigan's Liquor Control Commission. The location in Lansing has had its liquor license suspended by the commission and appears to be closed. In Lansing at 637 E. Michigan Ave., an orange sign posted on the door reads 'The Michigan Liquor Control Commission has suspended the license of this establishment,' according to a photo on social media. The location appears to be closed, as calls to the restaurant were met with a busy signal. David Marvin, a spokesman for Michigan's Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) told the Free Press Bobcat's Bonnie's liquor license in Lansing was suspended for 'dishonored payments for spirits purchases.' 'We delivered spirits, and they initiated an ETF payment that was returned,' Marvin Michigan, establishments are required to buy spirits from the commission. Marvin said Bobcat Bonnie's owes for two separate purchases: One for $621.93 and another for $ MLCC also fined Bobcat Bonnie's $450 for the violations. Marvin told the Lansing State Journal that the fines were issued "months ago." Bobcat Bonnie's owners had 45 days to pay them, the Lansing State Journal reported. Marvin said the deadline for paying them expired on June 3. "We did give them a little bit of extra time as we do with everyone," Marvin told the Lansing State Journal. "We reach out to folks when there are payments due. We don't want to suspend somebody if we don't have to." The Free Press reached out to Bobcat Bonnie's owner, Matt Buskard, via Facebook message, who responded with no comment to the suspended Lansing liquor license. The space was the former Clara's Lansing Station, which closed its doors nearly 10 years ago. It was just last week that, after seven years in Ferndale, Bobcat Bonnie's owners announced that the location would shutter with no reason given. The Ferndale restaurant was to close after service on June 2, leaving only Bobcat Bonnie's in Lansing remaining. Fixtures, glassware, artwork and furniture at the Ferndale location were being sold. At one time, Bobcat Bonnie's had seven March, after 10 years, Bobcat Bonnie's Corktown location — its first — shuttered abruptly. A Wyandotte location closed in January and offered the same type of sale of restaurant furnishings as Ferndale. Buskard has taken to social media the last several months, expressing in lengthy posts the challenges and struggles the restaurant industry has endured, including the pandemic and a tough business climate with a downward trend in sales. At one time, Bobcat Bonnie's had locations in Clinton Township at the Mall at Partridge Creek, which abruptly shuttered last August. Its Ypsilanti location closed a few months later. The Grand Rapids location is temporarily closed and was expected to move to another location, though the status is unclear, and the location is still listed on the website. A location in Toledo, Ohio, was also planned but never opened. Much like an airplane hitting unexpected turbulence, a cruise ship occasionally sails into rough seas. Although choppy waters don't typically have a big impact on large cruise ships, in rare cases, sudden wind gusts can send rogue waves into the path of a ship captains are very capable of handling severe weather and typically can steer their ships away from it, but sometimes, an unexpected weather incident just can't be avoided. For example, during a transatlantic cruise in November, a huge wind gust took Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas by surprise off the coast of Spain, which caused the ship to tilt severely. The scary situation caused some damage and minor injuries onboard the vessel, but the captain's quick action prevented the incident from becoming much worse. Now in June, a Princess Cruises sailing in another part of the world just encountered a similar sudden wind shift that was significant enough to cause the ship to list. Much like the captain of Explorer of the Seas, Crown Princess' captain swiftly pivoted to keep passengers safe. Good morning, here's your cruise news for Monday, June 9th. A crew member from a cruise ship docked in Crete was rescued after going overboard. Yeah, it happened last week while the ship was docked and passengers were ashore. Fellow crew members threw her a life jacket and called the Coast Guard, who responded quickly. The 30-year-old Tunisian woman, a crew assistant, was pulled from the water, conscious and in good health. The vessel involved hasn't been officially named, but tracking data from points to the Costa Deliziosa as the only ship in port for that Princess Cruises' Crown Princess hit rough seas off southern Australia, forcing a temporary shift in course during its 113-day world cruise. Now, winds up to 50 miles an hour came across the side of the ship, causing it to list or tilt about seven degrees. Captain Christopher Lye assured guests that the situation was under control and rerouted the ship briefly before resuming course to Adelaide. The list damaged onboard shops and led to cancellation of shows and activities, but no injuries were reported. Last November, a Royal Caribbean ship faced the same type of list during high winds over a transatlantic Carnival Cruise Line is celebrating 35 years of service, sailing from Port Canaveral with a ceremony held aboard Mardi Gras. Carnival launched operations there in 1990 and now homeports more ships at that port than any other cruise line, carrying over 1.2 million guests annually. The celebration included Carnival executives, local leaders, and the Coast Guard. Carnival also donated a hybrid pickup truck to Keep Brevard Beautiful, marking World Ocean Day. TEAMSTERS AT MAUSER FORCED TO STRIKE
Over 100 Chicago Workers on the Picket Lines as Strike Extends to L.A. and Minnesota CHICAGO, June 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 100 Teamsters at Mauser Packaging Solutions in Chicago are on strike after the company failed to offer a fair contract. The warehouse workers, represented by Teamsters Local 705, are demanding higher wages, better benefits, and safer working conditions. "Mauser is striking itself by refusing to put a serious offer on the table," said Juan Campos, President of Local 705 and Teamsters International Vice President At-Large. "Our members do essential work, and they deserve a contract that reflects their value. They are taking action to hold this greedy company accountable." Mauser is a multinational packaging company that manufactures drums, cans, bottles, and intermediate bulk containers. The Teamsters represent hundreds of Mauser workers across the U.S. Local 705's strike in Chicago has already extended to Mauser locations in Los Angeles and Minnesota. "All we're asking is for wages and benefits that let us support our families and keep up with the cost of living," said Leon Garrett, a warehouse worker at Mauser's Chicago facility and a member of Local 705. "We don't want to be on strike, but management left us no choice. This is about corporate greed, plain and simple." This isn't the company's first attempt to undercut workers. In April, Mauser's subsidiary, Industrial Container Services (ICS), locked out Teamsters Local 117 members in Seattle in a blatant attempt to break the union during contract negotiations. The strike by Local 705 members in Chicago marks a major escalation in the fight against Mauser's anti-union playbook. "Mauser tried to push us out instead of bargaining fairly," said Brian Perfitt, a locked-out Teamster at ICS and member of Local 117. "Now they're trying the same thing in Chicago — but they're not just fighting one group of Teamsters. They're up against the entire Teamsters Union." "Mauser is about to find out what it means to take on the Teamsters," said Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division. "We are bringing the full strength of this union to the fight. Our members will not be disrespected, and we will not back down."
