Lauren James Looking To ‘Refresh The Game' Ahead Of Euro 2025

'Music plays a big part' says England and Chelsea forward Lauren James when describing how she prepares for major tournaments, 'I'm not someone that really has strict pre-match rituals or superstitions – I just focus on my training.'
James faces a race against time to recover from a hamstring injury ahead of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 tournament in Switzerland this summer, but took some time out to head to the Wild West for Pepsi's Refresh the Game campaign.
Pepsi's video features its new female global ambassadors who are 'redefining the game' and sees them appear in classic Pepsi ads, with James popping up in a reprise of the cola brand's 2003 advert featuring David Beckham in a Wild West saloon, where James intercepts an ice cold Pepsi bound for Beckham before heading outside to nutmeg Saudi Arabian soccer player Farah Jefry. She says 'sharing the screen with legendary players of the past and future is a dream come true.'
It's perhaps apt that she was placed alongside Beckham as both share the dubious honor of being sent off for England at the World Cup, with James seeing red against Nigeria in the round of 16 at the 2023 World Cup, where England reached the final.
But Lauren James isn't your typical role model, she says 'I'm someone who thrives on being different – whether that's on the pitch or outside it. I like to think my style of play is quite unique,' adding that 'Growing up, girls aren't typically taught to show their physical strength, but I've been known to do this as a professional footballer across multiple attacking positions.'
England will certainly need James' strength in Switzerland as the Lionesses face something of a 'group of death' in Group D alongside France, the Netherlands, and local rivals Wales. England's opener is against France in Zurich on July 5.
James says 'featuring in this campaign alongside other great female athletes while recreating some of the amazing ads I grew up watching, is a proud moment for me.'
Those greats include England captain Leah Williamson, Spanish midfielder Alexia Putellas, and Norwegian striker Caroline Graham Hansen.
Putellas, who plays her club soccer for Barcelona, won the Ballon d'Or Feminin back-to-back in 2021 and 2022, but says she sees her awards 'as recognition of the entire team's work… Of course, achieving something that had never been done before is special, but for me, the most important thing is still helping my team win titles.'
Those titles include the 2023 World Cup, where Spain beat England 1-0 in the final, and Spain will be one of the favorites again at Euro 2025, kicking off against Portugal in Bern on July 3 before other Group B matches against Italy and Belgium.
Putellas appears in the ad 'alongside' Brazilian legend Pele, receiving a precision pass then doing a rainbow flick over a defender's head. She says 'To be 'playing' with the legendary Pele, even in a fictional game is an opportunity I never thought possible' and 'Seeing female players in campaigns like this normalizes our presence in the conversation at the same level as men… When a major brand invests in our sport, it's a powerful message that reinforces all the progress that has been made in recent years.'
Putellas says 'The more stories we tell, the bigger impact we can create.' Who knows what stories will be told in Switzerland this summer at Euro 2025.

The 2025 Club World Cup continued to bring some excitment on Thursday. As Groups A and B completed the second of three group stage games, the round brought four wins, including a key comeback and one stunning upset. After a pair of ties to kick off the stage, Group A remains up for grabs with wins for Palmeiras and Inter Miami on Thursday. Group B, meanwhile, was also thrown into chaos: Though Atlético Madrid cruised to a win over the Seattle Sounders to keep their hopes alive, Botafogo shocked PSG with a narrow win to move ahead in the group. Thursday's FIFA Club World Cup results Palmeiras 2, Al Ahly 0: An own goal opened up the scoring for Palmeiras and allowed them to take the lead in Group A with four points. After Al Ahly's Wessam Abou Ali unintentionally grazed the ball past his keeper in the 49th minute, Jose Manuel Lopez padded the lead with a goal in the 59th. The Brazilian side scored with their only shot on target (10 total). Al Ahly failed to get on the scoreboard, despite having eight shots with two in-frame. Advertisement Inter Miami 2, Porto 1: Lionel Messi's magic left foot sealed the deal for Inter Miami as they overcame Porto to secure their first win of the Club World Cup. A beautifully placed free kick from just outside the box broke the deadlock from Porto's Samu Aghehowa in the 8th minute and Miami's Talasco Segovia in the 47th. The Argentine curled the ball over the Porto wall and past Claudio Ramos to take three points for the Herons. Atlético Madrid 3, Sounders 1: It only took 11 minutes for Atlético to break through on the lopsided matchup, with midfielder Pablo Barrios giving the team a 1-0 lead off a strong, bouncing strike. But for a while, the Sounders stayed in the game, thwarting several key opportunities to keep Atlético from adding to the score in the first half. Just a few minutes into the second, another bouncing shot gave Atlético the 2-0 lead, as halftime substitute Axel Witsel hit a header off the rebound. Though the Sounders struck right back, with Albert Rusnák getting a goal to cut into Atlético's lead, Barrios hit his second of the game to take a 3-1 lead. Seattle may have put up a fight, but in the end, Atlético was simply the better team. Advertisement Botafogo 1, Paris Saint-Germain 0: Group B is quickly turning into the wildest group in the tournament, as Botafogo picked up a thrilling upset over PSG to throw the standings out of order. Botafogo stunned PSG with an early 1-0 lead, with striker Igor Jesus scoring in the 36th minute. PSG, the reigning UEFA champions, spent the rest of the game desperately trying to equalize, but could not break Botafogo's back line. The Brazilian club held on to secure the brilliant 1-0 win — the first real upset of the tournament so far — and move to the top of the group. Paris Saint-Germain 0 Botafogo 1 – Are Europe's struggles good for the Club World Cup?
Europe's teams lost twice in one day at the Club World Cup as Botafogo shocked Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain to take control of group B. The Copa Libertadores holders took a first-half lead when Marlon Freitas released Igor Jesus who got the better of PSG centre-backs Willian Pacho and Lucas Beraldo before getting a shot away that deflected off Pacho and past Gianluigi Donnarumma. Advertisement Early in the second half, Botafogo goalkeeper John blocked a close-range header from Goncalo Ramos and Luis Enrique sent on Joao Neves, Bradley Barcola, Nuno Mendes and Fabian Ruiz as the start of a series of substitutions to try and equalise but the John Textor-owned team from Brazil held on to beat his rival Nasser Al-Khelaifi's Qatar-backed PSG. Botafogo's win at a raucous Rose Bowl in Pasadena leaves them three points clear at the top of group B with four of the eight pools now led by teams from South America. Here The Athletic's Jack Lang, Jordan Campbell and Austin Green analyse the game's key talking points. For the first six days of the tournament it did not happen, but then two European teams lost in the space of eight hours. It is a healthy development for the competition as there were fears the gulf between Europe and the other continents would be so pronounced that the group stage was uncompetitive. Inter Miami beating Porto was the first real dent in the idea of Europe invincibility but Botafogo beating the reigning UEFA Champions League holders PSG was the sort of upset that can change the entire dynamics of a tournament. The Brazilian side defended resolutely and were able to regularly counter on the French champions. European sides have found it difficult to cope with the speed of PSG's moves but Botafogo matched them physically for most of the game. South American teams have now won five, drawn three and lost none of their games against opposition from other continents. The conditions may be more natural to some of the South American sides, who are also mid-season, but the European sides are finding that this is not the walkover they may have been expecting. Jordan Campbell Pacho and Beraldo seemed to have the situation well under control. Botafogo had nicked the ball in midfield but the PSG centre backs were well placed. There was a gap between them, but it was tiny, no more than three metres. No one was going to get through that. Then along came Igor Jesus. The Botafogo striker is not one of those subtle strikers. He doesn't paint pictures with his feet. He can look ungainly, a little imprecise. Tell him to run onto something, though, and he'll do it all day, then come back the morning after and ask for more. He saw the gap, laughed at it, barrelled into it like a wild horse. The pass came from Jefferson Savarino, as he knew it would. From there, it was just about maintaining the momentum. A second and a couple of touches later, the ball was in the net and Igor Jesus was in the crowd, being smothered in hugs. It's been a funny 12 months for the 24-year-old. Not so long ago, he was leading the line for the Brazil national team, the main individual beneficiary of Botafogo's all-conquering 2024 season. He has found the going much harder since the turn of the year. It was, in truth, a slight surprise when Nottingham Forest agreed to make a Premier League player of him in June. Advertisement Here, though, he showed his true potential. This may be his goodbye tour, but there is still a chance for him to make a few more memories in black and white yet. Jack Lang For PSG's first match of this tournament against a non-European side, Luis Enrique opted to sit several of his usual first-choice starters. Gonçalo Ramos started at centre-forward for the injured Ousmane Dembelet. Senny Mayulu and Warren Zaire-Emery flanked Vitinha in the midfield. Lucas Hernandez and Beraldo started on the back line over Mendes and Marquinhos. The results were mixed. PSG dominated possession but struggled to finish chances. They largely went away from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after the winger created two superb opportunities for himself in the opening 15 minutes. Ramos was a non-factor and missed a chance at a tap-in goal because he failed to make a run at a Desire Doue cross into the box in the first half. Beraldo and Pacho had their moments in central defence but were also responsible for giving up Igor Jesus' goal. It didn't take long after half-time — and another superb Botafogo chance on the counter — for Luis Enrique to determine he had seen enough. In came Barcola, Ruiz, Neves and Mendes in the 55th minute. The result was a livelier, more balanced PSG attack and one that negated Botafogo's counterattacking threat. But it was too little, too late. It's not just that PSG didn't find an equalizer, they barely had a quality chance until late in the second half. Credit Botafogo for superb positioning as the Brazilian side's back line grew more comfortable as the game went on. But given those early chances and PSG's early-scoring prowess throughout their run through the Champions League, it's hard not to second-guess Enrique's decision to sit so many first-choice players and not press for an early goal to then allow for some earlier-than-usual substitutions on the back end.
