CBI claims accused in excise policy case delaying trial
New Delhi: CBI submitted before a Delhi court on Friday that the accused in the alleged scam involving the formulation and implementation of the
Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22
are attempting to delay the trial.

After hearing the matter for over three hours, the court of special judge Dig Vinay Singh scheduled the matter for May 22 to decide on the issue of supplying a complete list of unrelied documents to the accused. Various accused have moved an application, demanding a complete list of unrelied documents.
In legal terms, unrelied documents refer to documents that investigating agencies or prosecutors possess but do not intend to use as evidence in a trial.
The court was hearing arguments from CBI and the accused about the supply of unrelied documents.
The case, which is at the stage of scrutiny of documents, includes former CM Arvind Kejriwal and deputy CM Manish Sisodia as accused, along with others. Arguments on charge are yet to begin, and it is only after they conclude that the trial will commence.
The prosecution has blamed the accused for causing a delay by moving various applications, while the accused have argued that the agencies have concealed some documents which could lead to their discharge in the case.
DP Singh, special public prosecutor appearing for CBI, submitted before the court that they were bombarded with emails regarding doubts about the documents. "We have already given them all the documents. They are stalling the proceedings. Let them inspect documents, but this should not come in the way of arguments on charge," Singh said. "If they think (accused persons) that we purposely did not make some documents relied upon, why haven't they moved an application regarding the same?" the SPP asked further.

Meanwhile, advocate Adit S Pujari, appearing for Amandeep Singh Dhall, an accused in the case, submitted before the court that CBI was suppressing a document which his client needed if he were to be discharged. The counsel appearing for another accused, Vinod Chauhan, told the court that CBI is causing delays and there is a deliberate concealment on their part. tnn

What's Trump Hiding? Japan's Game-Changer Jet Faces F-47 Sabotage Plot
New Delhi: Stirring fresh controversy, U.S. President Donald Trump has allegedly put pressure on Japan to abandon its advanced sixth-generation fighter jet program. According to a report by Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, Trump unexpectedly called Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru and pushed him to consider buying the American F‑47 jet. This is the same Washington that once refused to sell its F‑22 fighter jet to Tokyo, citing its sensitive technology. The world is now racing to develop sixth-generation fighter aircraft. India, Japan, Russia, China, the United States and several European countries are in the race. Japan among them has taken the lead. Through its Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), Japan is working with Italy and the United Kingdom to build a next-gen jet. The country is known for its advanced technology – something even the United States acknowledges. But now, Trump's direct intervention has raised eyebrows. The report says he spoke to Ishiba about his recent Middle East trip. Then, suddenly, he started talking about the F‑47. He praised the aircraft and even told the Japanese prime minister that '47 is a lucky number'. The US president urged Japan to buy the jet. He also praised the F‑22, which Japan had long wanted but was denied. Following this, Trump brought up the F‑55 – a newer and twin-engine version of the F‑35 stealth fighter. He asked Ishiba if he would like to see 'the best fighter jet America has'. 'We will give Japan the best,' he has been quoted by the newspaper as saying. However, it remained unclear what exactly Trump meant. Later, Japanese officials confirmed Trump had simply asked if Japan was interested in buying U.S.-made jets. Reports suggest the United States wants to sell a slightly downgraded version of the F‑47 to close allies. Trump had previously joked that allies call often, wanting the F‑47, and that the United States gives a 10% discount 'because who knows if they will stay allies?' At present, Japan operates the F‑35 and may expand its order. It has also shown interest in the U.S.-made C‑17 Globemaster III transport plane. However, Japan is already developing its own sixth-gen fighter under GCAP. So, Trump's sudden push for the F‑47 has raised suspicion. Italy, the United Kingdom and Japan agreed in 2022 to jointly build a sixth-gen fighter jet using cutting-edge technology. This led to the creation of GCAP. The project is massive, with a budget between $40-50 billion. But it has faced criticism in Japan's parliament due to rising inflation and a shrinking welfare budget. Is U.S. Trying to Undermine GCAP? Some defence analysts believe that the United States wants to disrupt the GCAP. Many European nations are supporting this project. If it succeeds, America could lose buyers for the F‑47. That would hurt the U.S. defence industry and weaken its influence. If Japan chooses the F‑47, the GCAP may lose credibility. But if Japan stays with the GCAP, it could be a diplomatic blow to the United States, especially since Tokyo is seen as a key pillar in the QUAD and the Indo-Pacific strategy. The United States might offer financial incentives and easier deals for the F‑47, but experts warn it could be a short-term gain and a long-term loss. Japan's decision will influence many other nations, including India, which is also developing its own jet under the AMCA project. If Japan sticks with the GCAP, it may inspire India to pursue a more balanced and independent defence strategy.

Internet cut as Meitei leader's arrest sparks protests in Manipur
Internet services were snapped and prohibitory orders clamped across Manipur's central valley Sunday after protests broke out overnight following the CBI's arrest of a leader of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol. Asem Kanan Singh, the self-styled 'army chief' of Arambai Tenggol, was detained Saturday evening from the Kwakeithel area in Imphal West by security forces along with four other members of the outfit. In response, Arambai Tenggol announced a 10-day 'total shutdown'. In a statement, the CBI said it arrested Asem at Imphal airport over his involvement in 'various criminal activities related to Manipur violence in 2023' and that he has been taken to Guwahati in connection with the investigation. 'It may be recalled that CBI is investigating Manipur violence cases as per the direction of Hon'ble Supreme Court of India. The trial of the Manipur violence cases have been shifted from Manipur to Guwahati in view of the law and order situation in Manipur. The said arrested member of Arambai Tenggol has been brought from Imphal to Guwahati and he will be produced before the competent court for police remand. Investigation is continuing,' the CBI said. According to officials, Asem was also allegedly involved in the February 2024 abduction of an Additional SP of Imphal West from his home. On Saturday night, as reports of the detention spread, protests erupted with protesters torching tyres and blocking roads in different parts of Imphal city. Confrontations between security forces and protestors were also reported at the Kwakeithel area, leaving multiple protesters injured. Internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN services, were suspended in the early hours of Sunday in the districts of Imphal East and West, Kakching, Thoubal and Bishnupur for five days through an order issued by Manipur Home Commissioner N Ashok Kumar. The order cited the apprehension that 'some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the state of Manipur.' Internet services were last snapped in these districts in September last year after protests following a renewed escalation of violence in the state. Following the latest protests, prohibitory orders under section 163 of the BNS were imposed across the valley districts citing 'apprehension of serious breach of peace, disturbance to public tranquility, riot or affray in the area, and grave danger to human lives and properties due to unlawful activities of anti-social elements.' In Bishnupur district, a total curfew was imposed with effect from 11 pm of June 7. Meanwhile, the Centre is expected to hold talks on Monday with one of the Kuki-Zo groups under Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement with the government. The meeting will be held with Advisor to MHA on North East A K Mishra. Sources said the meeting will largely focus on how to take the talks forward and discuss ways to arrive at a framework. 'Issues related to existing ceasefire agreements are not on the table yet. The demands pushed by the Kuki groups since the onset of violence will also be taken up later,' a government source said. Meitei groups are opposed to the government engaging SoO groups in talks. On Sunday, despite the heavy deployment of security forces, including the Army, in and around Imphal city, protesters enforced road blockades in several areas. At Keishampat in Imphal West district, a 13-year-old boy sustained injuries when a tear gas shell, which was allegedly fired by security forces, exploded. Also on Sunday, an all-political party delegation comprising 26 MLAs and Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. Congress MLA Okram Surjakumar said the delegates requested the Governor to make public the reason behind the arrest of the Arambai Tenggol leader. 'The Governor clarified that the AT leader was arrested in connection with a CBI related case. However, the four other members who were arrested with the leader are under verification and would be released after the verification process is over,' said Surjakumar. The NIA, meanwhile, said in a statement that it has arrested two more insurgents in connection with an attack on an IRB post in the Manipur border town of Moreh in January 2024 in which two police personnel had been killed, taking the total number of arrests in this case to three.
