'Wanted To Step Down After 2023 World Cup..': Rohit Reveals Talk With Dravid
Rohit Sharma revealed that he persuaded Rahul Dravid to stay on as coach after India's 2023 World Cup defeat.
India ODI captain Rohit Sharma revealed in a recent interview that he told then-head coach Rahul Dravid after losing to Australia in the final of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in Ahmedabad. Despite remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament, India failed to secure the title against the Pat Cummins-led team at Narendra Modi Stadium.
Following India's defeat, Dravid expressed his desire to step down from his coaching role. However, Rohit Sharma, the then skipper, persuaded Dravid to stay on until the T20 World Cup 2024.
On the anniversary of India's T20 World Cup victory, Rohit recalled his discussion with Dravid. He said, 'Rahul bhai wanted to step down after the 2023 World Cup. But we said, 'There's another World Cup in six months. We've come this far. Let's give it one more shot.' He agreed-and I'm so glad he did. I'm sure even now he feels that he made the right decision," Rohit was quoted as saying in an interview with JioHotstar.
Dravid's last assignment as India's head coach ended up being the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 against South Africa, where India defeated the Proteas by seven runs to win the title.
What Rohit Said About T20 World Cup?
Rohit also expressed his pride in finally lifting an ICC title as captain in Barbados, calling it the proudest moment of his career.
'For me personally, it was also emotional. My identity as a cricketer began with this format in the 2007 T20 World Cup. To come full circle and lift the trophy again in 2024-it was just fantastic," Rohit said.
'Barbados will forever be in my veins. This is the proudest moment of my cricketing career. To lift that trophy, to be crowned ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 Champions-it was surreal. I played in the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup and we won under MS Dhoni 's captaincy. And now, to win it again with Rahul Dravid as head coach-it meant everything to this group. We've seen heartbreak. We've come so close. That's why this one was so special. We worked and planned relentlessly every day. And when we finally won, all the emotions came pouring out. The younger players, especially those playing their first World Cup, realised how hard it is to win one. Nothing can be taken for granted. It was magical."
After India's T20 World Cup win, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the shortest format of the game, and the BCCI appointed Suryakumar Yadav as Rohit's successor to lead India in T20Is. Following Rahul Dravid, the BCCI appointed Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of Team India.

England's nemesis Spain bid to add Euro title to world crown
Spain are aiming for their first ever women's European title as the reigning world champions head to Euro 2025 with a squad packed with stars from arguably the best club team in the world. HT Image Spain showed they are the team to beat in Europe with their dramatic win over defending European champions England in June which propelled them into the Nations League semi-finals. It was England also that Spain beat in 2023 to be crowned world champions. Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Aitina Bonmati is the biggest name amongst a host of Barcelona players in Montse Tome's squad heading to Switzerland for the Euros which kicks off on Tuesday. However, there is a question mark hanging over Bonmati as she is recovering from viral meningitis, only being discharged from hospital on Sunday and due to meet up with her teammates later this week. "Talking about meningitis can be scary but it is controlled," said Tome. "She is a very important player for us. We'll wait for her as long as we can." La Roja's large Barca cohort will be keen to bounce back from a shock defeat to Arsenal in the recent Champions League final by holding the European and world titles at the same time. Spain will be without their all-time top scorer Jenni Hermoso who was not selected by Tome, one of many of those who delivered the World Cup not heading to the Euros. Veteran Hermoso's absence raised eyebrows as the 35-year-old plays and scores regularly for Tigres in Mexico. Tomes has insisted her absence has nothing to do with the furore that surrounded her being forcibly kissed after the World Cup final by former Spanish football federation chief Luis Rubiales. Rubiales was fined 10,800 euros for sexual assault in February. Hermoso, who has scored 57 times for her country, played in all six qualifiers for the Euros, netting three times, but hasn't featured in the last four Spain squads. She appeared to take a pop at Tome after being left out of the Euros squad by saying the players could "probably become champions of Europe on their own". The level of talent is such that Hermoso might have struck on a half-truth in her moment of anger: such is the quality available to Tomes only 11 World Cup winners are in the Euros squad. Claudia Pina is another star in the making after a series of impressive super-sub appearances for Barcelona and her country, including both goals in Spain's Nations League win over England. England coach Sarina Wiegman has had a difficult build-up to the Euros, with goalkeeper Mary Earps and midfielder Fran Kirby retiring from international football, while key defender Millie Bright then pulled out of the tournament to prioritise her mental and physical health. The trio started every game when England secured their first major silverware at the last Euros three years ago, and are huge losses for the Lionesses. England have also been far from their best in recent matches and are in the tournament's toughest group alongside France, the Netherlands and Wales. But Wiegman has reached the final, and won two, of her last four major tournaments and England are, alongside Germany, Spain's main rivals for victory in Switzerland. "My experience before tournaments is that there is always noise. We expect noise until we go into the tournament," said Wiegman after announcing her squad for the tournament. "It doesn't feel like a crisis at all." Eight-time champions Germany head into their first tournament without Alexandra Popp since the prolific Wolfsburg striker made her debut back in 2010. Missing someone with such a wealth of top-level experience is a blow for Germany, who haven't won a major honour since 2013. On the upside Christian Wuck's team are unbeaten in 2025. Wuck will rely heavily on Bayern Munich striker Lea Schueller who has scored 52 times in 75 appearances for Germany, including five goals in six Nations league Group A1 matches. td/pi This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Cristiano Ronaldo prioritising a record 6th World Cup over the Club World Cup
Resting up to play in a record sixth World Cup was more important to Cristiano Ronaldo than switching teams to play in the Club World Cup. 'I had some offers to play (Club) World Cup but I think it didn't make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long, because this is the season of the World Cup, at the end of the season,' Ronaldo said in an Instagram video posted by his Saudi Arabian club, Al Nassr, after signing a two-year extension. 'So I want to be ready not only for Al Nassr but also for the national team.' The 40-year-old Ronaldo helped Portugal to the Nations League trophy with a penalty shootout win over Spain three weeks ago as speculation swirled that he would transfer to another club to play in the Club World Cup currently being contested in the United States. He and longtime Argentina rival Lionel Messi could be the first players to appear in six World Cups at next year's tournament co-hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico. In Qatar three years ago, Ronaldo became the first male player to score at five World Cups. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner's extension with Al Nassr means he will play on until at least the age of 42. (AP) UNG

FIFA Club World Cup R016: Flamengo vs Bayern live match time, streaming
Bayern Munich face a challenging quarter-final clash against Flamengo on June 30 after finishing second in Group C, following a 1–0 loss to Benfica. That defeat, their first since early April, pushed them onto the tougher side of the draw, with a potential semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain looming. Vincent Kompany had already secured qualification with wins over Auckland City and Boca Juniors, opting to rotate his squad in the heat against Benfica—though that gamble may now prove costly. Flamengo, meanwhile, arrive in top form, topping their group with seven points and looking like one of the tournament's strongest contenders. With key players like De Arrascaeta, Gerson, and Gonzalo Plata returning, and the team firing across all lines, they'll be confident of testing the German giants. While Bayern boast star names like Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala, they'll need to be at their best to overcome a Flamengo side full of rhythm and attacking threat. Flamengo Team News Flamengo head into their Club World Cup quarter-final with a nearly full-strength squad, as Nicolás de la Cruz remains their only confirmed absentee. Head coach Tite is expected to recall several first-choice players after rotating heavily in the previous game against LAFC. Midfield trio Gerson, Erick Pulgar, and Jorginho are likely to return to anchor the engine room, while Ayrton Lucas and Léo Pereira will reinforce the defensive line. Gonzalo Plata is also tipped to start on the wing. However, the main spotlight will be on Giorgian De Arrascaeta, the current top scorer in the Brazilian league with nine goals in nine matches, who also found the net on matchday one of this tournament and recently scored for Uruguay in World Cup qualifying. Bayern Munich Team News Bayern Munich are also expected to restore their strongest XI following a rotated line-up on matchday three. Star striker Harry Kane, along with wingers Michael Olise and Kingsley Coman, are set to lead the attack. Jonathan Tah is expected to return in central defence, while creative midfielder Jamal Musiala could make his first start of the tournament. However, Bayern remain without several key defenders—Kim Min-jae, Alphonso Davies, and Hiroki Ito—due to injury, while Eric Dier is unavailable, not being registered in their Club World Cup squad. Despite these absences, Bayern's squad depth gives them plenty of quality options.
