Luke Dennison denies Mason Melia to earn Drogheda another draw in Inchicore

RTÉ News2 days ago

St Pat's and Drogheda played out their third scoreless league draw of the season by the banks of the Camac River as a penalty by the Spurs-bound Mason Melia was saved by visiting keeper Luke Dennison.
Drogheda came to Inchicore with just three defeats from their 19 games this season but just one win in five before the international break and were thankful to keeper Dennison, and indeed the woodwork, as they left Richmond Park with a hard-fought point, their tenth draw of the season.
Drogheda enjoyed some decent early pressure on the home defence without really penetrating, a nice one-two between Douglas James-Taylor and Warren Davis saw the latter's curling left-foot shot saved by Joe Anang.
Having survived what Drogs had thrown at them, Saints then almost scored from their first attack as Jason McClelland's corner was headed just wide by Tom Grivosti in the 17th minute.
The miss galvanised St Pat's, who were awarded a penalty when Taylor stood on the Achilles of Kian Leavy, right on the edge of the area, just past the midway point of the opening half.
The tackle looked marginally outside, but referee Kevin O'Sullivan immediately pointed to the spot.
However, Dennison guessed right, diving away to his left to deny Melia and keep it scoreless at half time
Three minutes into the second half, United very nearly took the lead as Taylor, set up by Ryan Brennan, swivelled beautifully in the St Pat's area, but dragged his shot wide, while at the other end Zach Elbouzedi missed a great chance for the home side when he shot straight at Dennison from the edge of the area.
Melia's curling effort then just missed the far post as St Pats turned up the heat on the away goal. Dennison was called into action again, acrobatically saving Simon Power's header from Ryan McLoughlin's cross.
The home side's onslaught continued as Leavy then hit the post in a goalmouth scramble in the 50th minute.
Both managers began to empty their respective benches as the second half wore on and it took the sting out of the game, Drogheda dealing well with the St Pats attack despite the home side enjoyed the lion's share of possession.
Some in the home support thought St Pats had scored in the 76th minute, as McClelland's deflected shot hit the side netting, much to the amusement of the Drog's travelling support.
Taylor then tested Anang with a shot that was dipping under the crossbar until the home keeper tipped it over for a corner, which was in truth the last real action of the contest before its inevitable conclusion.
St Patrick's Athletic: Joseph Anang; Ryan McLaughlin, Joe Redmond, Tom Grivosti, Anto Breslin; Zach Elbouzedi (Jake Mulraney 61) Jason McClelland, Jamie Lennon, Simon Power (Conor Carty 87); Kian Leavy (Brandon Kavanagh 67); Mason Melia (Aidan Keena 67).

Transfers: Tottenham Hotspur make Mathys Tel signing permanent

Tottenham have completed the permanent signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich on a six-year deal. The 20-year-old forward spent the second half of last season on loan from the Bundesliga champions and scored three goals in 20 appearances. The loan included an option for Spurs to make the deal permanent for £45.8million (€53.8m), however it is understood the club successfully negotiated the fee down to £29.8m (€35m). Having moved to Bayern from Rennes in 2022 he initially enjoyed a significant role, playing 69 times during his first two seasons before falling out of favour when Vincent Kompany was appointed a year ago. He made only eight league appearances during the first half of last season before being loaned to Spurs - whom he initially turned down before an abrupt change of heart late in the January transfer window. The club finished 17th in the Premier League, their lowest-ever finish, but qualified for the Champions League courtesy of their 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final. Tel, who was an unused substitute in the final in Bilbao, is currently representing France at the under-21 European Championships in Slovakia alongside team-mate Wilson Odobert, and scored his team's opening goal of the tournament, a penalty in Saturday's 3-2 win over Georgia. Bayern's director of football Max Eberl said: "Mathys Tel came to FC Bayern as a very young player and took his first steps into top-level international football here. "He was a popular figure in our team, always giving his all for the club and the team. It has become clear that the move to Tottenham was the right one for his development."

Kevin Doherty insists Drogheda United have 'strong case' ahead of Court of Arbitration appeal

Drogheda United manager Kevin Doherty remains hopeful that the decision to prevent the club from competing in this season's UEFA Conference League will be reversed and insists that they have a "strong case". Earlier this week, the club revealed that UEFA had informed them that they will not be allowed to take part in Europe's third tier club competition due to ownership rules. United, owned by the Trivela Group, qualified for the competition by winning last year's FAI Cup. However, Danish side Silkeborg, also under the Trivela umbrella, secured a place in the Conference League through their league position. Under UEFA rules, two sides from the same owner cannot enter the same European competition. Silkeborg take priority due to their higher league position under UEFA guidelines. However, Drogheda have appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport with a ruling to come on Monday. Speaking to RTÉ Sport's John Kenny after Friday night's 0-0 draw with St Patrick's Athletic, Drogs boss Doherty was bullish about the club's hopes of avoiding a costly absence from European competition. "I know we have a very, very strong case. A very, very strong case," he said. "For the players, for the staff, we'll do our bit and we'll go out there and fight for everything. "I fully absolutely trust the people at the club that will do the exact same. Absolutely no doubt in my mind. "I've been in the loop. I know we've a very strong case." Doherty also admitted that it was inevitable that he or the players would be impacted somewhat by what has been going on in the background. However, he was keen to get the message across to his players that it needed to be put in perspective. "You wouldn't be human if you didn't think about it. There's no point pretending we're not thinking about it," he said. "I've been kept in the loop so we have to probably do our part. I made this point to the players as well. I've been at clubs where you had serious things to worry about. "There's a club last year for instance that people had serious things to worry about. There's a couple of clubs. "We're very, very well looked after at this club. Things are going in the right direction and what we as players and staff can do is fight and fight and fight for every ball, every tackle, every header, every point and every clean sheet and as I said, I fully trust the people around the club to do the exact same." On the pitch, the scoreless draw was the third 0-0 in three that Drogheda and St Pat's have played out in their head-to-heads against each other this season. "It is unusual," Doherty admitted of the trend. "And it's three excellent performances from us in different ways. The first time they got in our box was after 18 minutes. We started the game so, so well." However, Luke Dennison's penalty save from Saints youngster Mason Melia proved vital in preserving Drogheda's clean sheet. "But then (Pat's) obviously got into it, get the penalty which is a penalty and poor from us but Luke just showed how much these clean sheets mean to him and all of us," Doherty added, who said he had to be happy with the point in the context of the opposition and his own side's 2025 trajectory.
