Mount Everest conquered: Defence Minister Singh felicitates 10 NCC cadets for historic feat
New Delhi: In a stirring ceremony, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday felicitated a 10-member National Cadet Corps (NCC) Mountaineering Expedition Team, including five girls and five boys, for successfully scaling Mount Everest, the world's highest peak on May 18, 2025.
During the event held at South Block, New Delhi, the cadets shared their experiences of the expedition, detailing the rigorous training, meticulous planning and challenges encountered.
The Defence Minister commended the team for passing the test of courage, discipline, resilience and composure with flying colours.
The cadets were honoured with a cheque of Rs 10 lakh for achieving the feat in the harshest of conditions. The young mountaineers, led by Colonel Amit Bisht, achieved the feat in the face of extreme weather and high-altitude challenges, completing the expedition without a single injury.
Terming the cadets as a source of inspiration to the younger generation, Defence Minister Singh stated that "with the expedition, the brave cadets have sent a message that even the world's highest peak is no limit for the youth of the country."
He exuded confidence that "the cadets would overcome future challenges with the same courage and determination they displayed while scaling Mount Everest."
The Defence Minister also lauded the NCC for nurturing the next generation of physically resilient, mentally strong and socially responsible citizens. He also appreciated the family members of the cadets who supported them in this endeavour. DG NCC Lt-Gen Gurbirpal Singh was among the dignitaries present on the occasion.
It is pertinent to note here that the feat marked the third successful Everest expedition by the NCC, following similar accomplishments in 2013 and 2016. The expedition team comprised 10 cadets, a contingent of officers, junior commissioned officers, instructors and non-commissioned officers.
The team consisted of Subedar Major Balkar Singh, the first Subedar Major of the Indian Army to summit Mount Everest. The young cadet of the team was just 16 years old.

Summer traffic chokes Doon Valley, nearby towns as tourists pour in
1 2 Dehradun: With the summer tourist influx rising sharply across the Doon Valley and surrounding regions, traffic congestion has brought several major routes to a near standstill. Dehradun, along with Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Mussoorie, has been severely affected. In the state capital, ongoing construction at Rashtrapati Ashiana on Rajpur Road—the key arterial route to Mussoorie—has narrowed the stretch into a bottleneck, resulting in traffic snarls at peak hours due to the construction of a foot overbridge. Sahastradhara is also seeing daily logjams, with vehicles backed up for hours. Entry points to the city such as Mohand, Saharanpur Road, and Haridwar Bypass are similarly clogged. "This fear regarding Ashiana was raised when the project was first introduced. Without long-term planning, we're unequipped to handle the surge, especially with the Delhi-Dehradun expressway nearing completion. To fix an existing problem, new projects are introduced that create more issues. Like the proposed Rs 6500 crore elevated roads, which are expected to address the increasing traffic volume, but will likely cause more ecological harm to the city. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo More roads mean more vehicles," said social activist Lokesh Ohri, who was stuck in a Rishikesh jam for over three hours this week. Addressing Dehradun's traffic issues, SSP Ajai Singh said on Friday that multiple govt agencies are carrying out development work around Ashiana in preparation for the President's scheduled June 20 visit. "Traffic has been diverted from the Jakhan area, affecting Rajpur Road. Additional police have been deployed to manage the situation," he said. In Haridwar, the Char Dham Yatra has led to traffic woes. Har-ki-Pauri is now avoided even by locals. A Delhi resident recently called it a 'nightmarish experience.' "The number of vehicles is overwhelming, and most drivers show no traffic sense," said local resident Ashwini Manav. "Parking is grossly inadequate. It is difficult to understand how the city administration handles four to five crore kanwariyas visiting the city in ten to twelve days, as per their claim." Efforts to reach SP (Traffic) Jitendra Mehra for comment were unsuccessful. Mussoorie is faring no better. On June 5, a tourist reportedly died after being stuck in traffic and failing to reach a hospital in time. "The traffic is becoming a headache for both tourists and locals. It's not just about delays—what happens if a loved one needs urgent care?" asked resident Shalabh Garg. Locals complain that despite yearly promises by the administration, as the season comes, "everything falls flat". Inadequate parking, roadside encroachments, rental two-wheelers, and congestion on Mall Road during peak hours are worsening the problem. "The city needs a long-term traffic plan," one resident said. Mussoorie station officer Santosh Kunwar said the police are working hard to resolve the issues. "During emergencies, people can call us, and we'll clear the way for ambulances," he said. Kunwar also urged the RTO to crack down on unregulated rental two-wheelers and halt new permits. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Govt nod for rope cars, iron bridges to key hill shrines
Cleared - mani Chennai: An iron bridge for Sathuragiri temple in Theni district and a ropeway for Avuvavi temple in Coimbatore. These are among a host of projects and infrastructure approved by Tamil Nadu govt for various hill shrines in the state. In a joint coordination meeting chaired by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) department and the environment department, ministers R S Rajakannappan and PK Sekar Babu cleared key proposals for temples. These include Sathuragiri Sundara Mahalingam in Madurai, Thiruthani Subramania in Tiruvallur, Irakkayi Amman near Alagarkoil, Bannari Mariamman in Erode, and Anuvavi Subramania in Coimbatore. These rope car services, safer trekking paths, bridges, and improved amenities will make pilgrimage safer and more comfortable at several prominent temples in the state. At the remote Sathuragiri temple, which sees several thousand trekkers annually, the govt will construct hand railings and iron bridges across streams along the three access routes. These are a 7 km trek from Thaniparai in Virudhunagar, a 4.5 km path from Valaithoppu in Madurai, and a 14 km trail from Varusanadu in Theni. "Since 2012, there were 18 flash floods here that stranded 11,740 devotees and led to 10 deaths. Safety infrastructure is now being prioritised," said an official, adding that water levels reach upto five feet during rains. A rope car project at Anuvavi temple in Coimbatore has also been approved. Planned at a height of 420 m and a cost of Rs 13 crore, the ropeway will traverse forest land. Officials said this route passes through a critical elephant corridor between Thadagam and Boluvampatti valleys, near Kerala range. "Elephants are frequently spotted near the temple gate at a lower entrance. Rope cars can help reduce human-animal conflict," an official with HR and CE in Coimbatore said. Other cleared projects include trekking path upgrades to the 365-step trek in Thiruthani temple, road development to Irakkayi Amman temple, and new dormitories and dining halls for pilgrims. Steps, railings, and toilets will be set up in the Thiruthani temple. The state has also approved land transfers, lease renewals, and basic facilities for over 10 temples across Erode, Dharmapuri, Coimbatore, Virudhunagar, and Rameswaram. Approvals will be fast-tracked under the Wildlife Protection Act. MSID:: 121833259 413 | Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
