Harwich's Electric Palace cinema visited by Sir Stephen Frears
An award-winning film director has visited one of the UK's oldest cinemas as part of the venue's ongoing fundraising efforts.Sir Stephen Frears attended a screening of his film Dangerous Liaisons at the Electric Palace cinema in Harwich on Thursday, followed by a question and answer session with the audience.He said the independent Essex venue, which opened in 1911, was "absolutely stunning" and urged local film lovers to support it.The cinema is trying to raise £50,000 for a new projector, and a further £25,000 for other improvements to the Grade II* listed building.
"I can see that staying at home and seeing films on the telly is less effort, but I only see films in cinemas," said Sir Stephen, whose CV includes the films The Queen and Philomena."I love going to the cinema and I'm completely committed to it."Particularly nowadays with everything being so corporate… [the Electric Palace] is really important. This is so modest and heroic."
Cinema chairman Deb Perkins said she was delighted to welcome Sir Stephen to the venue.She said its single screen would be replaced in March thanks to sponsorship from the Harwich Haven Authority.Ms Perkins hopes further fundraising will future-proof the cinema so it can be enjoyed by the next generation of film lovers.
The history
Travelling showman Charles Thurston first opened the Electric Palace in 1911.Some 45 years later, Mr Thurston, who also owned three cinemas in nearby Dovercourt which have since closed, decided to shut up shop in Harwich.
The building had been owned by the town council, which according to former chairman David Looser, wanted to demolish the building in the 1970s to make way for a car park.But, keen to save the historical cinema, retired architect Andrew Carden and GP Chris Strachan leased the building for three years and eventually bought the freehold after restoring it to its former glory.The Electric Palace reopened under the pair's leadership in 1981.
In 2018, the cinema closed temporarily for repairs to its ceiling at a cost of £1.7m.Today, having survived two world wars and a global pandemic, it is owned by the Harwich Electric Palace Trust and is run mostly by volunteers.Mr Looser, now the cinema's technical manager, first got involved in the venue in 1975."I was single at the time, had time on my hands, and it looked like a fun thing to get involved in," he said."I love the place and it's such a big part of my life."

"I was videoing Stephen but then I heard [the man] say 'I hate Scousers.' "He talked about Scousers robbing purses - just the stereotypes of what gives us all a bad name." Catherine expressed her dismay, saying, "It was just not nice when you're enjoying yourself and you're having that in the background. "When I confronted him he said it's not about Liverpool, it's about football - so he changed it from us being robbers to it was about the football." Despite attempting to perform another song after the confrontation, Stephen was too disheartened by the heckling and stopped midway through. The incident put a damper on the couple's holiday, and they revealed it "took the shine off" their final night in the lakes, leaving soon after. It comes after another British holidaymaker has told how she became "sick to death of looking at rice" after the hotel she stayed at during her picturesque island getaway came with "no English food". Susan Edwards, from Westerhope, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, has refused to book with TUI again after paying for an all-inclusive trip to Corfu where she wasn't offered English food. The mum, 69, had jetted off to the Greek island paradise with her two cousins, aged 77 and 78, 50-year-old second cousin and daughter, 30, on a TUI package holiday. But she said the vacation was "horrendous" from the minute they arrived, and that the Brits were left with "no food" they could eat. Speaking to the Newcastle Chronicle, Susan said the group discovered on the first morning of their stay at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel that there was "no English food" available. The mum, who suffers from ulcerative colitis, lamented the lack of bacon and sausage, saying she and the group were unhappy when they were presented with traditional Greek fare. She said: "On a morning you could have toast, a hard boiled egg, or something in sauce. "There was no bacon. For breakfast there was mozzarella and sliced tomatoes. There was no hot bacon or sausage. We got chips one day. One day out of the whole lot. "There was fish, sardines and rice - I was sick to death of looking at rice. There was pasta and salads, none of this was marked (labelled). One night there was a Greek night and they had kebabs, I couldn't eat that. It's the worst holiday I've ever been on."

The actor and father of two experienced an unsettling health dilemma mid-flight to America, which resulted in an emergency operation on the plane Stephen Graham has opened up about the "scary" emergency operation he underwent while on a plane. Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the Adolescence actor spoke of a medical emergency that took place the last time he touched down in the States. After the host asked about his previous traumatic flight, Stephen responded by saying it was "a hell of an experience". He elaborated: "Look, I'm of a certain age, you know what I mean? You're a gentleman, like myself. I don't know; once you get over like 45, you tend to go to the toilet quite a lot of times." His storytelling made the crowd laugh and had viewers wondering where this story was going exactly. Graham went on to explain how many people opt to have a catheter fitted, which is something he himself had opted for. Ultimately , it was supposed to aid him in his bathroom habits, and he explained that after "three to four months", you should be experiencing "fewer trips to the toilet". Although the Netflix star found himself in a bit of an unusual situation on a flight 10,000 feet in the air when everything had been fine, right up until that point. He tells the late-night host about drinking water on the flight as usual, going to the toilet and suddenly not being able to pee. "I'm like, Oh, this doesn't feel right," he told Myers. "I knew I had to, and then silly Stephen thought, 'Oh, well, if I go back to my seat and I just keep drinking water, at some point it will happen.'" After going back to his seat and some time passing, he went back to the toilet and was shocked by what happened next. Graham said: "long story short, all of a sudden I went, but it was just pure blood," adding that it was "very scary". He further explained that he couldn't stop the sheer amount of blood and began to have a "slight panic attack". He admitted that the entire situation had made him quite emotional, but luck was on his side, as he remembers taking a selfie with a fan before the flight, who just happened to be a doctor. "He had another friend with him, who was a surgeon," the actor explained. "So I'm there, and I explain. He's like, 'Ok,' and the surgeon, Dr Haji, says, 'We can work this out.'" The entire area he was in was sterilised, and a catheter was pulled out of an emergency box. To put it bluntly, Graham said: "I drop my kecks, I get on the couch, and he performs a catheter operation there and then." And, once it was over and done with, the adolescence star took a selfie with the doctors and crew on board to remember the moment.
