Across Europe, Nanny's influence is growing: there has been a steady erosion of liberty for those of us who like to eat, drink, vape or smoke. Leading the pack in the 2025 Nanny State Index is Turkey where the state's penchant for control borders on fetishistic, banning vapes outright and taxing alcohol off the scale. Its only saving grace is that so many of its little prohibitions are poorly enforced.
Hot on its heels is Lithuania, where the war on fun is fought with puritanical zeal. Alcohol is a particular target, with the drinking age raised to 20 a few years ago and all advertising banned. E-cigarettes are not outlawed entirely but are saddled with such a ludicrously high tax – €6.30 (£5.30) per bottle – that they might as well be.
Finland, Hungary and Ireland make up the rest of the top five. In Ireland, cigarettes are priced as if they were Fabergé eggs and the state deems its citizens too feeble-minded to navigate a supermarket without state-issued blinkers.

Chalmers targets World final after new personal best

Rapist paedophile made girl, 11, pregnant

"He has ruined it all from past, present to future."I have never been so sad in my life."All the happiness has washed away."The girl said giving birth was "horrible" and she feared for her daughter's future."I love [my daughter] so much but I wish she was here in a different way and time," the girl said. "Her childhood is going to be ruined too." 'Cruel and horrible' Judge Clews said it was "not an exaggeration to say" the man "stole [the girl's] childhood and innocence", adding he had "destroyed" her life and sent it down a path that was "irrevocably changed". He said the extent of the damage caused by the man would take years to become clear and his actions were "appalling", "cruel" and "horrible".The judge said: "I've no doubt that, as any mother would, [the girl] loves her child, but that is going to present her with significant difficulties as she and the child grow older."However much she loves the child, their presence will be a continual reminder of what [the man] did to her that night."Restraining orders banning the man from contacting the girl or baby were made to last indefinitely, as was a sexual harm prevention order severely limiting his contact with children for the rest of his must also sign the sex offenders register until further order. Walmart is a top pick as it advances its e-commerce efforts, Mizuho says
Walmart's push to grow in the e-commerce arena could be a key catalyst for its stock, according to Mizuho Securities. The firm named Walmart a top pick and raised its price target on the retailer to $115 per share from $105. That implies upside of nearly 18%. "The multi-year rebuild into a much more tech-led player is working, with a focus on speed of delivery and further volume gains ahead," analyst David Bellinger said. "WMT is on pace to deliver annual U.S. e-commerce revenues in excess of $100B or closing in on ~10% of all domestic online sales - making it second-largest only to Amazon (AMZN)." WMT YTD mountain Walmart stock in 2025. "With this in mind, we are considering WMT through a new lens and as one of the more dominant digital players in today's highly competitive landscape. We continue to see a path to $4+ in earnings power with advertising, marketplace, and membership as high growth and highly accretive complements," the analyst added. Walmart shares rose slightly in the premarket following Mizuho's call. Year to date, the stock is up nearly 8%. Analysts covering the stock are overwhelmingly bullish. LSEG data shows that 43 of 44 of those covering Walmart rate it a buy or strong buy. Just one analyst rates the stock as a hold.
