New change to one of Australia's most popular cars

Daily Mail21-05-2025

The new 2026 Toyota RAV4 medium SUV has been unveiled, featuring an refreshed, rugged exterior. Aussies have long been in love with the RAV4 with its current model, the 2018 fifth-gen, awarded the country's second-best-selling car. Toyota will take a punt by upgrading their fan-favorite vehicle in the first half of 2026.
The manufacturer promised the latest RAV4 would 'build on the legacy of its popular predecessors' while introducing new safety and multimedia features on top of advanced hybrid powertrain solutions. The new RAV4 will be the first Toyota offered in Australia with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.
The feature allows drivers the choice of between 2WD or AWD and delivers improved electric motor output and transaxle efficiency. Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the all-new RAV4 would continue to resonate with customers like its forebears.
'When it first arrived in Australia in 1994, the RAV4 appealed to Australian customers with its family-friendly utility, bold design and signature Toyota dependability and has since attracted more than 500,000 sales,' Mr Hanley said.
'Since the 2001 launch of Toyota's first hybrid electric vehicle in Australia, we have led the development of hybrid technology that is refined, powerful and efficient, delivering customer confidence for quality, durability and reliability. 'With the launch of our first plug-in hybrid, we are taking that broad customer appeal in a diversified powertrain landscape to a whole new level.'
Other features below the car's skin are largely reminiscent of the current RAV4 with a full range of revised petrol-electric hybrids centred on the beloved 2018 2.5-litre four-cylinder. Due to Australia's soon-to-be updated inbound emission standards, Toyota will be required to import the -in version of the RAV4.
Its new 22.7kWh high-capacity lithium-ion battery supports DC fast charging with a 50kW onboard charger, which promises to replenish the battery from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 30 minutes. Customers can also choose a new 11kW AC charger for recharging in as little as three hours.
The new and improved front electric motor has an output of 150kW, reaching up to 227kW on AWD. Those who opt for the more affordable 2WD PHEV system can expect an output of 201kW. The flagship of the new RAV4 varieties will be the range-topping GR Sport. It features a 20mm wider track, sport dampers, stiffer suspension, recalibrated power steering and a grille design with GR mesh pattern.
The vehicle's inside specs are also impressive with a faster and better-connected 12.9-inch infotainment system, 12.3-inch digital dash and precise voice control. It will also feature a range a improved safety features including cross-traffic alert, lane change assist and Pre Collision System.

Vauxhall Astra Griffin jumps in price but still costs just £26k

The Vauxhall Astra Griffin launched last year, providing a better-equipped trim for less money in Vauxhall's family hatchback line-up, and now it's been revised for 2025 with a new hybrid powertrain to go with the petrol and pure-electric versions. Not only does it now come in Astra Hybrid Griffin specification, there's also new cosmetic tweaks. There's a bit of a price bump, however, while it still comes in £2,775 cheaper than the outgoing Design trim, the Astra Griffin starts at £26,090 - making it £1,275 more expensive than before. The Astra Electric Griffin is only £10 more now, at £35,005, and the new Astra Hybrid Griffin splits the two, at £28,540. You can also have the Griffin model as a 'Sports Tourer' estate, commanding premiums of £2,800 over the hatchback version for the petrol and hybrid, or £1,200 for the EV. Instead of the still relatively fresh Hybrid 136 system that's used across the Stellantis group, the Astra Hybrid Griffin gets the newer and more powerful Hybrid 145. It's still a mild-hybrid set-up employing an electrified six-speed automatic gearbox with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, but there's 143bhp for a nine-second 0-62mph time and a fuel efficiency of 58.9mpg. The other powertrains remain unchanged, with the Astra Electric Griffin still managing 260 miles on a charge and the 128bhp turbocharged 1.2-litre model offered in manual or automatic guises. There's quite a lot of kit included, considering the Griffin is the cheapest Astra you can get. On the outside there's a new contrasting black roof, rear tinted windows and diamond-cut 17-inch alloy wheels, with the Astra Electric model getting 18-inch rims. Heated front seats remain, along with wireless smartphone charging – both of which weren't offered on the old Astra Design trim. There's also a heated leather steering wheel, an armrest (for petrol models), a frameless rear-view mirror, keyless go and a 180-degree rear-view camera. The Astra's dual-screen set-up of two 10-inch displays still sit on the dash, and have wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. There's also the equivalent of 10,000 miles of free home charging if you switch to the Octopus GO energy tariff. Click here for our list of the best hatchbacks ... Toyota's Big Electric Leap: 7 New EVs Are Coming to the United States

Toyota has been picking up the pace to challenge competitors in the US EV segment, and those efforts could make it a top manufacturer over the next few years. Toyota is finally waking up Toyota's been rather sluggish on the transition to EVs, instead taking a slow approach by shifting most of its lineup from combustion engines to hybrid powertrains. Don't count Toyota out of the game just yet, though – consider the manufacturer a sleeping giant who is finally waking up. After a weak entrance into the electrified segment with the bZ4X, soon to be renamed the bZ, the Japanese automaker is ramping up production with plans to sell seven EVs in the United States by mid-2027. Previous Pause Next Unmute 0:00 / 0:10 2025 Ford Maverick: 4 reasons to love it, 2 reasons to think twice Watch More 2026 Toyota bZ — Source: Toyota At least two EVs will be made in the United States Toyota currently has two all-electric models between its main and premium Lexus brands. The Toyota bZ4X, renamed to bZ for the 2026 model year, receives several major updates that make it more attractive, including a 314-mile range. The 2026 Lexus RZ follows suit, with improved performance and up to 300 miles of range on a single charge. Toyota also announced that the C-HR will arrive sometime in 2026, presumably for the 2027 model year, and offer a 290-mile range. 2026 Toyota C-HR — Source: Toyota Production of two new EVs will begin at its American manufacturing facilities in 2026, while three others will be imported. According to executives, the Japanese automaker expects slow but steady growth in the EV segment. If there's a surplus for American-made EVs, Toyota will export that surplus to overseas markets with faster EV adoption rates. 'We'll sell a little bit more every year and grow with the market,' Cooper Ericksen, a senior vice president of planning and strategy at Toyota Motor North America, told Bloomberg. 'But we have to think about how many Canada will use, how many the US will use, and we can then export to other global destinations.' 2026 Toyota RAV4 — Source: Toyota Toyota previously pledged to offer an electrified version of every nameplate on its global lineup. To date, approximately 80% of Toyota and Lexus models are available with hybrid or all-electric powertrains. Most recently, Toyota announced that the 2026 RAV4 will come with hybrid-only powertrains. Toyota's U.S. battery production prepares to come online Toyota plans to manufacture at least two new EVs in the United States, but their production efforts don't end there. The Japanese automaker has plans to begin producing and shipping lithium-ion batteries from its US facility later this year. The battery plant spans more than 1,850 acres in Liberty, North Carolina. Once fully operational, the facility will have 14 lines producing batteries. Of those, four will manufacture hybrid batteries, while the other 10 will supply batteries for the two American-made EVs. 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland — Source: Toyota The first hybrid battery line is expected to start production in June, with the rest beginning operations through 2034. Once all 14 lines are running, the production facility will produce up to 30 gigawatt hours, the equivalent of 800,000 hybrid, 150,000 plug-in hybrid, and 300,000 EV batteries. Toyota sold less than 30,000 EVs in 2024, during which US EV sales rose 7.3% to 1.3 million. That isn't surprising, considering the automaker has been fairly outspoken regarding government policy towards EV adoption. Instead of using incentives to speed up EV sales, such as the $7,500 tax credit, Toyota executives indicated that governmental bodies should allow the EV segment to grow organically. 2026 Toyota C-HR — Source: Toyota 'The whole EV ecosystem is ahead of the consumer,' said Jack Hollis, COO of Toyota North America, in November 2024 regarding emissions regulations. 'It's not in alignment with consumers. It's just not.' Even so, the Japanese automaker expects EV market share to double over the next five years. According to Cox Automotive, EV sales made up 8.1% of total vehicle sales in 2024. Currently, competitors like Tesla and Hyundai are dominating US EV sales. While all-electric vehicles might not be a major seller for Toyota now, executives aren't willing to cede the segment to competing manufacturers. Source: Lexus Final thoughts Tariffs aside, it looks like Toyota has a solid plan to become a true competitor in the EV segment. Considering the original bZ4X crossover was met with mixed reactions thanks to its slow charging speed, lackluster performance, and disappointing range, Toyota's upcoming EVs are a breath of fresh air. The updated bZ and RZ seem promising enough, and the upcoming C-HR looks like a stylish addition to the all-electric lineup. If the pricing is right, Toyota could very well overtake General Motors and Hyundai within a few years. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the Japanese manufacturer manages to topple Tesla, too.

Inside Kia's refreshed Sportage including comfy cabin, punchy new looks and driving mode young families will love

PEOPLE say never work with children or animals. Because they're totally unpredictable. Treats will only get you so far. 5 5 But I'm not one to listen. So when Kia said Britain's favourite SUV is better for the family than ever before, I had to put it to the test. Meet Maisie and her new bestie, Bijoux the cockapoo. Two little fluff balls, perfect for having a proper rummage around the refreshed Sportage. Here are five things you need to know. 1. It's got a 'baby and toddler mode' which smooths out acceleration and driver inputs. Makes everything less jolty. So little toddlers like Maisie stay sound asleep. Happy babies = happy parents. You know that. 2. The boot. Comfortably beats a Nissan Qashqai at 587 litres v 504. Swallows pushchairs, luggage and all the usual family debris — even a dog crate to keep Bijoux safe. Which also means no muddy paws on the seats. Bonus. Some dogs will appreciate the baby mode, too. The Sun's Motors Editor, Rob Gill test drives the Kia EV3 3. New front end. OUT go the 'boomerang' lights from today's Sportage. IN comes the 'star map' LEDs inspired by Kia's growing EV line-up. Looks punchy. More aggressive. Will help Sportage stand out from the crowd. The rear lights have also been updated, as well as some other little details to keep things fresh. 4. Cabin. Absolutely nailed it. Lots of big-car tech in here but still knobs and buttons for the things that need knobs and buttons. Comfy. Roomy. Lots of handy storage, big cup holders, even USB-C charging ports in the side of the front seats for people sat in the back. Three well-equipped trim levels, not four as before. Posher versions get Apple CarPlay satnav arrows integrated into the Head-up Display. 5. Engines. Three choices — 1.6-litre petrol mild hybrid, full hybrid or plug-in hybrid. The last two have a bit more oomph than before and the option of four-wheel drive. Here's some good news for caravanners and people with weekend toys. Maximum towing capacity has increased to 1,510kg. No diesel. No pure electric. If you want to go electric next, there's a Sportage-sized EV5 coming soon. 6. Sorry, I can't count. Price. No official numbers from Kia yet but I'm guessing £31k for the petrol manual when it hits showrooms in September? That would be a lot of car at a sensible price. Maisie's parents own a Kia Niro by the way. You can guess what car they want next. 5 5
