Sukhoi fighter jet tyres fitted on Lord Jagannath's chariot for ISKCON Kolkata Rath Yatra
Kolkata, Forty-eight years after trundling on tyres used for Boeing aircraft, the chariot used during ISKCON's Rath Yatra in Kolkata has got new tyres that are used for Sukhoi 4th generation fighter jets.
The chariot, with the new set of tyres, will carry Lord Jagannath on this year's Rath Yatra which will be held on June 27.
The ageing and worn-out old tyres have been replaced by the new tyres used for Sukhoi 4th generation fighter jets, according to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness .
Vice President of ISKCON Kolkata Radharaman Das told PTI on Monday that for the last 48 years, tyres used for Boeing aircraft were used to pull the chariot of Lord Jagannath, but for the last 20 years they have been trying to get a replacement as technical issues cropped up with the four old tyres over time.
"We were looking for replacements but the maker of Boeing tyres, Dunlop had stopped operations years back. After thorough research, Sukhoi's tyres closely matched our specifications as those have the same diameter size tyres used in Boeing," he said.
"We then contacted MRF which makes tyres for the Sukhoi fighter jets. The company's experts came to Kolkata in December last year and inspected our chariot that carries the idol of Lord Jagannath on Rath yatra. After the tyres were fitted, the chariot had a test run for over 20 km in the city on May 31," he said.
Some structural adjustments had to be made in the wooden chariot to fit in the Sukhoi tyres, Das said.
"So by the grace of Lord Jagannath his chariot got brand new tyres and we are confident of a smooth journey of the Lord on the day of auspicious Rath Yatra on June 27 and Ultorath-The return car festival on July 5," he added.
Each of the four tyres can withstand a load of 16 tonnes. The chariots of other deities will have iron wheels as usual.
Asked if using fighter aircraft tyres for pulling the chariot of the Lord is unique and unprecedented, Das said, "We had fitted Boeing tyres with the main chariot in 1977 for the Lord's journey on the roads of Kolkata. We have no information about such practices followed elsewhere in the country or Asia."

F-47 sixth generation fighter jet of US likely to get its first buyer, not India, Pakistan, Israel, Ukraine, UK, France, Saudi Arabia, it is...
F-47 will be the first American-made 6th gen fighter jet. (File/Wiki) Amid Russia and China rapidly advancing their military technologies, especially the development of sixth-generation fighter jets, the United States has announced that it was building F-47– the country's first 6th-gen fighter jet. Sharing the news, US President Donald Trump described the F-47 as the 'most advanced and powerful jet' ever built. 'The F-47 will be the most advanced, most capable, most lethal aircraft ever built,' Trump said, while his Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said the 6th-generation aircraft was a 'clear message' to US' allies and enemies. 'It sends a very clear message to our allies that we're here to stay—and to our enemies that we will continue to project power globally without any obstacles,' said Hegseth. F-47 – US' first 6th-generation fighter jet Developed and manufactured by American aerospace giant Boeing, the F-47 is the US' first officially-announced 6th-generation fighter jet designed to supplement and support its older platforms, such as the F-15, F-16, F-18, F-22, and F-35 fighters. Notably, China is already developing two two sixth-generation fighter jet prototypes, the J-36 and J-50, one of whom was showcased at the Zhuhai Airshow in late 2024. The Chinese 6th-gen fighter jets feature advanced stealth capabilities with a unique tailless airframes, and will be powered by three engines. Japan to be first buyer of F-47? Interestingly, Japan may become the first country to acquire the F-47 fighter jet from the US. According to a report by the Eurasian Times, Japan is considering to add the sixth-generation aircraft to its air force fleet. Additionally, several media reports have claimed the Donald Trump had personally offered F-47 jet to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during a phone call last month. However, Trump said the export variant of the F-47 which will be sold to US allies will be a 'toned down' version of the aircraft. 'Our allies are calling constantly. They want to buy them also. And we will be selling to certain allies—perhaps toned-down versions,' Trump said.

India's auto retails register a modest growth of 5% in May
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) today released Vehicle Retail Data for May'25. According to FADA, the month of May registered a modest 5% year-on-year growth overall. Segment-wise, 2W, 3W, and Trac led the way with gains of 7.3%, 6.2%, and 2.7% respectively, while PV, CE, and CV declined by 3.1%, 6.3%, and 3.7%. In the 2W category, retail volumes fell 2.02% M-o-M but still posted a robust 7.31% Y-o-Y increase. Dealers attribute this resilience to a higher number of auspicious marriage days, a strong Rabi harvest, and pre-monsoon demand especially in semi-urban and rural markets. Passenger-vehicle retails contracted by 13.6% M-o-M and 3.1% Y-o-Y, while inventory dayswhich had hovered around 50have edged up to approximately 5253 days. Entry-level models were hardest hit as constrained financing and subdued consumer sentiment compounded the slowdown. Commercial-vehicle retails declined by 11.25% M-o-M and 3.71% Y-o-Y amid muted freight cycles, tight liquidity, and adverse geopolitical sentiment. While bus sales offered some relief, passenger carriers and commodity-linked segments (cement, coal) saw sharp de-growth due to delayed financing and softening TIV. Channel dynamics for June reflect this cautious optimism: monsoon-driven rural traction and festival pull-through should sustain 2W activity, yet persistent financing constraints and selective OEM price adjustments may temper incremental gains. PV dealers report elevated inventory days and legacy product portfolios, limiting retail conversions despite localized Rath Yatra uplifts. In the CV segment, inventory churn remains elevated as OEMs and Dealers pre-empt June 25 A/C-cabin regulations, while freight demand in coal, cement, and mining continues to be muted by liquidity bottlenecks and early rains. To navigate this lean yet resilient month, OEMs and financiers must synchronize production planning with ground-reality demand signals, deploy calibrated channel incentives, and secure adequate working-capital support. Collectively, these factors point to a cautiously optimistic near-term outlook for Auto Retail in June 25, as per FADA.

Construction of Kendrapada's chariot for Rath Yatra underway
Kendrapada: The construction of a massive 65-ft-long chariot with 14 wheels is in full swing at the historic Baladevjew temple in Ichapur, Kendrapada for the upcoming annual Rath Yatra on June 27. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The 300-year-old temple, located in what is known as 'Tulasi Khetra', is dedicated to Lord Baladev, elder brother of Lord Jagannath. "We procured 760 cubic feet of sal wood from Telkoi forest department in Keonjhar district for constructing the state's second-biggest wooden chariot," said Balabhadra Patri, executive officer of Baladevjew temple. The construction began on May 23, delayed due to late wood procurement from the forest department. Of the 14 wheels of the chariot 'Bramahataladhawaja', only four new wheels are being built while 10 are being repaired, owing to wood quality constraints. About 25 carpenters are working to complete the chariot before the festival. Poll What aspect of the Rath Yatra excites you the most? The chariot procession The rituals and prayers The temple faced challenges during last year's Rath Yatra when three wheels were damaged, causing the chariot to bend during the procession. "This year, we're taking extra precautions to ensure proper repair of old wheels by expert carpenters," Patri added. Priest Niranjan Dash expressed concerns about the use of cast-off timber in construction, similar to last year when the chariot took four days to cover the 2-km journey to Mausima temple. The art of chariot-making here is a hereditary craft. Saroj Moharana, 54, a third-generation carpenter with three decades of experience, learned the trade from his father and grandfather. "As Rath Yatra approaches, chariot makers enter their busiest season," he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to Pradeep Moharana, 56, another local carpenter, the number of families practising this art has declined from 40 to around 20 over four decades. Historical records show that the present Baladevjew temple was built in 1761 by Raja Gopal Sandha of Kujang during the Maratha rule.
