Briton Evans stuns Tiafoe, Rune cruises into Queen's second round
LONDON, June 16 (Reuters) - Briton Dan Evans upset American seventh seed Frances Tiafoe 7-5 6-2 on Monday to book his place in the last 16 at the Queen's Club Championships.
The 35-year-old, ranked 199th in the world, was handed a wildcard and responded with his first win over a top-20 player since 2023, earning a standing ovation from the crowd when he wrapped up victory in straight sets.
After edging a tight opener, in which he battled back from 5-4 down, Evans carried the momentum into the second set with a five-game winning streak before securing a double break with a touch of fortune when his forehand clipped the net cord and dropped in.
"I didn't know he was top 20, but I knew he was very good. I'm happy to play some good tennis because it has been few and far between," Evans said.
"Days like this are why I've been carrying on playing... It has been a long year so far. I've been playing the lower (challenger) tournaments, but this is why I'm hanging around to try and get some wins on the grass."
Fourth seed Holger Rune began his campaign with a solid 6-3 6-4 win over Australia lucky loser Christopher O'Connell.
Denmark's Rune, the world number nine, is seeking his first grasscourt title ahead of Wimbledon, where his best result was a quarter-final run in 2023.
Roberto Bautista Agut saved a match point before beating Portugal's Nuno Borges 6-7(6) 7-5 6-4. Borges led 4-1 in the second set, but the experienced Spaniard fought back strongly to advance.

David Moyes targets Kyle Walker for new Everton era
Kyle Walker has emerged as a serious target for Everton as they look to build David Moyes's squad heading into their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock. Moyes is in the market for a right-back following Ashley Young's departure from the club at the end of the month, with Walker among the candidates they are willing to explore. Walker, 35, was not taken to the Club World Cup with Manchester City and will be allowed to leave the Etihad Stadium having spent eight years at the club, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League. He was loaned out to AC Milan for the second half of the 2024-25 campaign and returned this month, although is not expected to be returning to Italy for a second spell at the San Siro. While he is assessing his next options, Everton could be an attractive destination in terms of location and their ambitious plans as they start next season in a brand new ground after leaving Goodison Park. Moyes played Jake O'Brien at right-back but is looking at options to provide competition in that area, with the Republic of Ireland international also able to play as a centre-back. The club released Young along with Abdoulaye Doucouré, Joao Virginia, Asmir Begovic, Mason Holgate and Neal Maupay at the end of their deals this summer. Walker was at fault for one of Senegal's goals in England's 3-1 defeat at the City Ground, although Thomas Tuchel, the head coach, defended him by insisting he was out of rhythm after a recent shoulder injury. Ismaïla Sarr pounces! 💥 Senegal are the first team to score past Thomas Tuchel's England side #ITVFootball | #ThreeLions — ITV Football (@itvfootball) June 10, 2025 But the England manager also praised Walker's presence in the camp and his performances in training, backing him to recover from his mistake. 'I think at the moment you see a lack of rhythm. Because he did not play the last matches, not many minutes for AC Milan,' Tuchel said. 'And after his broken elbow he lost his rhythm, that's what you feel in camp. I saw him very composed. 'I saw him very open. I saw him absolutely happy to be in camp and proud to be in camp. He trained very well. Every single player who played today deserved it, over two camps or in this camp, to play, to start, to come in. That counts also for Kyle. I feel a lack of rhythm in his game.'

Dan Evans: I've come full circle winning first match at Andy Murray Arena
Dan Evans felt he had come full circle after winning the first men's match at the newly-christened Andy Murray Arena. Evans beat world number 13 Frances Tiafoe 7-5 6-2 to reach the second round of the HSBC Championships at Queen's Club. The 35-year-old was Murray's partner when the three-time grand slam winner and former world number one played his final match, for Great Britain in the men's doubles at the Olympics last year. 'I didn't really think anything of it when I was put first on,' said Evans. 'But then a few people mentioned it, that I had finished with him in his last match and then played the men's event, the first match. It was pretty cool to do that.' Evans, now ranked a lowly 199 and plodding around the lower-tier Challenger events, rolled back the years against big-serving American Tiafoe. He picked up his second career win over a top-20 opponent on grass, having knocked 16th-ranked Nikoloz Basilashvili out of Wimbledon six years ago. 'I still believed I've got that tennis in me and I still believe I can do good things inside the top 100. But believing it and it happening is a lot different,' he added. 'You know, that's why I wake up in the morning to go to practice, to go to training. Top WIN for Dan Evans 💪 Dan claims his first @atptour Top 20 win since September 2023 #BackTheBrits 🇬🇧 | #HSBCChampionships — LTA (@the_LTA) June 16, 2025 'You know how some days you think 'are you deluded, are you nuts, have you still got it, still got it in your legs'? I think today showed I still have a bit left.' Evans needed a wildcard to play at Queen's and will need another if he is to compete at Wimbledon. 'I don't think any younger players have been ripping up stumps to knock me out of the wildcard spot,' he said. 'So I think I've got a good shot again. If I don't, yeah, I respect the All England Club. It's an amazing tournament, and they might go for younger people, which is perfectly fine. If they don't, I've got a chance.' British number two Jacob Fearnley joined Evans in round two after he made short work of Australia's Alex Bolt with a 6-2 6-4 victory. Edinburgh-born Fearnley, 23, said: 'It's really special to play here at Queen's on the Andy Murray Arena. 'As a British tennis player, this is where we want to be playing, in front of a home crowd at Queen's. 'It's huge. I'm super happy he got an arena named after him. He was my biggest role model growing up.'
