Station roof revamp completed ahead of more works
Work to restore Huddersfield's railway station's canopy roof has been completed.
After scaffolding and coverings are removed, 29 restored trusses and a series of ornamental floral-effect joins will be revealed.
The Grade I listed building's revamp started around 18 months ago and is part of the multibillion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU).
The next phase of work, which includes platform remodelling, is due to take place between August and September, with the station being out of use for 30 days.
The station roof is one of the last remaining examples of a Euston-style roof on an operational railway.
Part of the completed work also includes the dismantling of 8,000 pieces of the Grade II listed tearooms, with the plans for them to be reinstated later.
Huddersfield station's £70m transformation is due to be completed in early 2027, though works to electrify the line will continue beyond this date, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The end result will see longer platforms, a new layout, new footbridge and refurbished roof structure with restored lantern.
TRU aims to bring faster, greener, more frequent and more reliable railway journeys between Manchester and York.
John Ely, TRU senior project manager for Huddersfield station, said: "A transport hub like Huddersfield station deserves to be brought up to modern standards so it can facilitate improved rail travel, but its historic status needs preserving and we've done just that."

Race Across the World friends reunite to film but one couple seems to be missing
The contestants of Race Across the World 2025 – who told Yahoo UK that they're in touch daily – have been reunited to film together. Brothers Brian and Melvyn, as well as Sioned, shared a group selfie on their Instagram accounts on Monday but former married couple Yin and Gaz were notably missing from the photograph. The four final teams were recording with BBC Breakfast host and Celebrity Race Across the World winner Scott Mills to discuss the upcoming final. Sioned explained why only four teams were there on Instagram: "So this is why we were all together again?! Obviously we just had to chat to Scott Mills before the Race Across the World final, he knows all too well about our experiences! If you missed it catch up on BBC Sounds and BBC Radio 2 to listen to all of us chit chat more about heading into the last leg." There is also a reunion episode — which airs on Wednesday 18 June — that typically filmed about six months or so after the show has ended where the contestants have the chance to reflect on their journeys together. All the Race Across the World stars usually film the reunion, including the eliminated couple. Already the contestants had staggered arrival times, with Melvyn being the first to get to the breakfast room before filming. Melvyn, teenage couple Sioned and Fin as well as mother and son Caroline and Tom all were around the night before. They enjoyed an early get together before Brian, Letitia and Elizabeth arrived the following day for filming. All of the Race Across the World contestants have all remained good friends via WhatsApp. Behind the scenes, Brian explained to Yahoo UK that they speak everyday. Before filming the reunion, Brian told Yahoo UK: "Yeah [we have a] big WhatsApp group, we speak daily. We are trying to meet up if we can but it's quite difficult to get everybody together. It is tough." He added: "We'll keep trying and hopefully maybe by the end of June, maybe July once it's all finished, we'll try meet up somewhere." Although Race Across the World focuses on the bonds of those in each individual teams, they leave the experience with a new set of friends. The teams have the chance to get to know each other at the checkpoint hotels where they can stay between 36-48 hours before starting the next leg. There they can chat about the experiences they've had along the way and spend time together. In a separate conversation, sisters Elizabeth and Letitia also told Yahoo UK about how "well" everyone got on from series five. Elizabeth told Yahoo UK: "We're obviously trying to to do the best that we can in the race, but we all got on so well and sharing experience like this [bonds you]. "You're only sharing it with such a small group and they understand exactly how it feels when you miss the train. You reach the checkpoint and can relax. We really, really get on and you know, that's so nice. We've got a group chat, we're still talking." The reunion filming comes just one week after the youngest contestants from this year met up at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Liverpool. Teenage couple Sioned and Fin loved meeting up with sisters Elizabeth and Letitia as well as Tom. Reality worlds collided at the festival as the Race Across the World competitors joined forces with Traitors winner Jake and banished Freddie. Of the meet up, Sioned wrote on Instagram: "Big Weekend was definitely BIG. Life is mad. Honestly loved every minute and couldn't have asked for a more positive and amazing experience." Although they are all competing in the race, Race Across the World often sees the rival contestants forming close bonds. Last year, winner Owen Wood revealed they had a WhatsApp group but had become particularly close to Betty and James who were close in age to him and Alfie Watts. He told Yahoo UK: "So we were in a group chat with all of them together. And me and Alfie keep in contact pretty well with James and Betty, obviously because of similar ages. So we speak to all of them. "We've met up with Betty and James a couple of times but, yeah, we all get on really well. We've all been in it together, even though we were racing separate races. But we can just respect what each other's been through. And, yeah, we just understand each other very well." Race Across the World continues at 9pm on Wednesday on BBC One, and streams on BBC iPlayer.

Where to drink in Jerez, the birthplace of Spanish sherry

A pretty place with a jumble of Moorish-style courtyards, gothic churches and grand baroque buildings, the small Andalucian city of Jerez is largely untouched by gentrification and tourism — despite being only an hour from Seville. Yet it has a long-held reputation as the country's sherry capital: 'jerez' means 'sherry' in Spanish and the fortified wine has been made here for over 3,000 years. Once considered old fashioned, sherry has stepped back into the spotlight in recent years, popping up in cocktails and spritzes in bars globally, and Jerez is the ideal place to rediscover it. Locals work hard to preserve their traditions — and have a good time, too — whether it's at flamenco clubs, horse shows or lively sherry bars called tabancos. And with new direct flights from the UK launching this summer, the city is more accessible than ever. Tabanco & tapas tour Start your sherry education with Jerez native Aurora Muñoz, who runs Soleras y Criaderas. Her evening tours take travellers through the winding streets of the historic centre, stopping in different tabancos. As guests sample sherry and tapas, Aurora tells the story of the fortified wine, including how its production boomed in the 16th century after Sir Francis Drake stole 3,000 casks from neighbouring Cadiz and took them to England. The history of the tabancos themselves — originally drinking spots reserved for workers in the sherry-producing bodegas — is also explored. Alongside traditional bars, Aurora stops at places putting a modern spin on the sherry drinking experience, such as bottle-shop-meets-deli Mantequeria El Espartero. Las Banderillas All ages gather at this traditional tabanco, where the walls are covered in bullfighting paraphernalia. Grandparents perch on high stools waiting for plates of Iberico ham to be passed back to them, toddlers are put on the bar and young couples grab glasses of fino — the driest sherry — to swig standing in the street. While normally tabancos serve simple cold snacks alongside the sherry, people come here for the full kitchen and excellent tapas — don't miss the grilled octopus with garlicky potatoes. C. Caballeros, 12, 11403 Jerez de la Frontera Tabanco El Pasaje At Jerez's oldest tabanco — 100 this year — the sherry comes with a side of the city's other most famous export, flamenco. Three times a day (around 2pm, 7.30pm and 9.30pm), a silence falls upon this normally riotous bar, one soon filled with the distinct sounds of this Andalucian art form — strumming guitars, energetic stomping and emotive singing. Book one of the limited tables for a front-row seat or join the standing crowd at the back — there's a well-positioned mirror to enable those with an obstructed view to see. Restaurante Pedro Nolasco Best known for its famous Tio Pepe fino, the González Byass winery complex also houses this standout restaurant. Accessed via a private cobbled street enclosed by a canopy of vines, this minimalist ground-floor spot sits in an old wine cellar that opens up to a bright courtyard overlooking Jerez cathedral. Start with a refreshing fino spritz, made with dry sherry, sparkling water and elderflower. The dishes that follow are sherry-themed, such as sea bass with sherry vinegar, and melon infused with Tio Pepe, lime and honey. Bodegas Tradición This small-scale independent sherry producer offers informative tours with a tasting. After seeing the sherry-making process and cellars up close, the bodega's guide pulls up chairs in front of the barrels and serves up six key sherries. Taste from the driest (fino) to the sweetest (Pedro Ximénez), accompanied by an explanation of the processes that transform white grapes into these distinct flavours. The visit concludes with a tour of the owner's private art collection, which includes works by Goya, Velázquez and El Greco. Jerez's little airport is six miles north east of the city. New direct flights are available from May to October with Jet2 from Birmingham, Leeds Bradford and Manchester. Seville is also just an hour from Jerez by train and has year-round flight options from across the UK.
