British man and teenager drown in incident near Australia's Great Barrier Reef

Independent14-04-2025

A 46-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy from Britain drowned after being swept into rough waters off the Queensland coast in Australia.
They were swimming at Round Hill Head in the seaside town of Seventeen Seventy on Sunday when the incident occurred.
Emergency services responded at around 2.15pm local time and deployed a rescue helicopter, but both individuals were declared dead at the scene.
Police confirmed that the man and the teenager were visiting from the UK. While their names were not released, it was understood the victims were father and son.
Authorities did not confirm if their family had been informed.
A 37-year-old Australian man from Monto, a town some 150km inland, was also swept into the sea during the incident. He was rescued and airlifted to the Bundaberg Hospital with serious head injuries. The man was later transferred to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.
The emergency medical service described Sunday's rescue mission as 'difficult'. 'Multiple crews were tasked to the scene,' CapRescue was quoted as saying by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Darren Everard from Surf Life Saving Queensland called the drowning 'an absolute tragedy'. The incident occurred during the local school holiday period, a time when tourist numbers usually swelled in the region, he noted.
Mr Everard said authorities were still investigating. 'We're not sure whether the third person jumped into the water trying to perform a rescue,' he said.
He also warned of the dangers along the area's coastline, especially near creeks and rocky headlands, during high tides and strong swells. 'It's chaos in the water,' he said, 'and sadly, that's where we have coastal fatalities in Australia.'
Seventeen Seventy, nearly 500km north of Brisbane, and the neighbouring town of Agnes Water are known for their scenic beaches and proximity to the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. The area attracts large numbers of both domestic and foreign tourists around Easter.
In spite of their popularity, only one beach in the region, at Agnes Water, is patrolled by lifeguards.
Mr Everard urged all visitors to swim only at patrolled beaches and to familiarise themselves with local conditions. 'Seek local knowledge,' he said, 'but you also need to go to where those flags are.'
Australian beaches plant red and yellow flags to mark safe swimming zones.
Wayne Mellock, a local surf shop owner, said the community was reeling from the tragedy. 'Situations like this are absolutely horrific,' he told ABC News. 'We have a very huge amount of international tourists in our town.'
Police confirmed the drownings were being treated as non-suspicious and said a report would be prepared for the coroner.

Towering piles of rubbish, chains, dog toys and dirty bed sheets can all be seen in the sickening home where Pheobe stayed with James Wood and Tanika Bromley. 9 Harrowing footage has revealed the disgusting conditions teen Pheobe Bishop was living in with her two alleged killer housemates Credit: 7 News 9 Chains and dirty bed sheets can be seen inside the home Credit: 7 News 9 The floor to the bedrooms could barely be seen through the piles of rubbish Credit: 7 News 9 Cops believe Pheobe Bishop was murdered Credit: Facebook Wood, 34, and Bromley, 33, were both formally charged with the 17-year-old's murder earlier this month. And just a day later, human remains were discovered on June 6 by police after a major three week search for a body. As investigations continue into Pheobe's tragic death, the shocking state of her home in Gin Gin has been uncovered. Australian news outlet 7News managed to get access to the property and revealed the squalor Pheobe was enduring in the weeks before her passing. Before entering, the landlord can be heard in the video announcing: "I can't prepare you enough for this." In almost every room the floor was impossible to see due to the mounds of rubbish. Footage shows mountains of half empty soda bottles, unopened packages and full black bin liners in each room. The furniture was all out of place across the house with the sofas falling apart and the beds stained yellow. Even dog poo appeared to be on the floors of the old Queenslander-style home. Due to the horror conditions and poor cleaning, a major issue with the property was the smell. He also revealed the home was officially leased out by Bromley six months ago but she had been given a notice to leave after a recent inspection. Pheobe, from Gin Gin north of Brisbane, hadn't been seen or heard from since Thursday, May 15. Police first arrested Wood as he was the last person to see the teen as he reportedly took her to the airport. Cops believe during the drive to the airport, Wood, his girlfriend Bromley, and Pheobe all argued over stopping on the trip. Pheobe wanted to do her makeup in the car as she was on her way to Perth to visit her "high-school sweetheart" boyfriend, Wood said. The teen got her way in the end as Wood said he pulled over less than a kilometre away from their destination. He said: "We wanted to give her five minutes, give her her own space to do what she needed to do." 9 Full black sacks could be seen next to piles of rubbish Credit: 7 News 9 The landlord at the home even admitted 'the air tastes dirty' Credit: 7News 9 Phoebe with her heartbroken mum Credit: Facebook Wood and Bromley then said they walked off and were away from the car for around five minutes. When they returned, Wood said Pheobe and her bag were gone. This was the last time Pheobe was seen as an intense search operation was launched. On May 26, cops made a harrowing revelation. They believed evidence of a potential murder had been moved to cover up what had happened. On this same day, a new number plate was discovered to have been suspiciously painted and taped over Bromley's Hyundai car which drove to the airport. On June 5, police officially charged the couple with murder and two counts of interfering with a corpse. Cops allege Wood, Bromley and Pheobe were all in the car when it arrived at Airport Drive near Bundaberg Airport. They believe that the trio never left the car. Detective Inspector Craig Mansfield said: "Our evidence will outline the fact that three people arrived near to the airport, and three people never exited that vehicle." The pair continue to say they had nothing to do with Pheobe's disappearance or death. Wood and Bromley will appear in court on August 11. Terrifying moment Brit photographer films himself being shot in HEAD with rubber bullet during LA immigration riots

THIS is the terrifying moment a British veteran photographer is shot in the head during the frenzied protests in Los Angeles. Dad-of-two Toby Canham was left with a severe head wound after he was fired at by a Californian police officer with a rubber bullet. 6 Veteran photographer Toby Canham has shared a nasty injury he suffered during the frenzied protests in Los Angeles Credit: The Mega Agency 6 The moment a California Highway Patrol officer fired at the dad-of-two Credit: The Mega Agency 6 Canham was seen being treated at the scene on Sunday night Credit: The Mega Agency Canham, 59, was standing just off the 101 Freeway in downtown LA reporting from a tense standoff between cops and protesters on Sunday. The police were stationed beneath the bridge at a low level and just 100 yards away from Canham and his camera. The photographer, who has previously served in the British Army, was on assignment for the New York Post at the time. Hundreds of rioters had gathered above the highway during the protests - prompting journalists to closely watch the chaos. But an unlucky Canham was caught by a bullet fired from a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer. Footage captured by the veteran showed the cop suddenly position himself behind a pack of fellow officers behind a pillar. Moments later he opened fire towards the top of the freeway. It is unclear what prompted the stray bullet. Canham was savagely hit directly in the forehead and quickly collapsed to the ground. He could be heard screaming in agony: "F***, f***, I just got shot in the head!". The Sun's Katy Forrester Reporting Live from Los Angeles The journalist was helped back to his feet by horrified onlookers who quickly noticed a big red mark appearing. Pictures show Canham being treated at the scene with a noticeable gash in the middle of his head from the powerful rubber bullet. He was taken to hospital late on Sunday and spent most of Monday being treated for whiplash and neck pain. Canham said after the ordeal: "When I got whacked, to my best recollection it was just me filming with my cameras on and then I got shot. "Where I was hit, I was the only person overlooking the freeway. I wasn't surrounded so I was an easy target." Canham also recalled just minutes before being hit, a flashbang exploded a mere few feet away from him. It left him with two rips in his trousers from flying shrapnel. A protester nearby reportedly launched a water bottle at authorities in retaliation. On the same day, a TV journalist was shot live on air as she reported on the violent immigration riots in downtown LA. Australian reporter Lauren Tomasi was covering the protests for Nine News when she was hit at close range by a rubber bullet. The ordeal caused her to collapse in agony mid-broadcast. Elsewhere, a British photojournalist was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery when a 'sponge bullet' tore through his thigh during the same night of carnage. Nick Stern, 60, from Hertford, said he had made himself clearly visible as a member of the press when he was shot while photographing a standoff between protesters and riot cops. LA's streets have turned into a warzone since Friday as heavily armed riot cops used tear gas and rubber bullets to stop incoming rioters. Sunday night saw the worst of the protests with police being forced to defend the city as people set cars on fire and looted shops. The chaos has continued for five days with California now announcing a curfew for downtown LA between 8pm and 6am. The anti-ICE and anti-Donald Trump demonstrations have spread to New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and other major cities since. 6 Canham taken to hospital late on Sunday and spent most of Monday being treated for whiplash and neck pain Credit: The Mega Agency 6 TV journalist Lauren Tomasi was reporting live from the streets of LA amid the violent protests in the city when she was shot by cops

Onlookers couldn't hide their amusement at the officers' inability to break down the front door. One chuckling onlooker teased them, taunting: "Bit Harder!" "Go on, hit it!" They then mocked the fumbling officers with a killer line: "Call yourself a police force? "There's no force in ya!" Two officers can be seen repeatedly attempting to barge down the door. Even while using a handheld ram and a hooligan bar they are unable able to enter the house. Two other visible cops can be seen standing idly by as their colleagues floundered at the house's entrance. The door does appear to have suffered some damage, as there is a significant dent is visible on its left side, as well as fractures to its top, glass window. Yet it remained upright and intact. Many seeing the social media video online were quick to mock the officers' fruitless efforts. One man commented: "They couldn't break into an Easter egg." Another said they, "Couldn't open an advent calendar door." One comment even appears onscreen at the end of the video saying: "Rumour has it they're still trying." Some people saw a darker side to the video, believing it showed a decline in British policing standards. "Police are losing respect, it's what it's come to. So sad," commented one viewer. A different TikTok user said: "It's a shame because I have respect for the police. "But currently the state of this country is a joke. In a twist, one user, claiming to be a former Method of Entry instructor, even seemed to spot why the police were having such little success. He said: "Use the other end of hooligan bar i.e. the wedge knocked into the door gap. "Then pull on the bar and the door (usually) opens."
