Vientos scratched from Mets' lineup with abdominal soreness. Montas set to begin rehab assignment
Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — Third baseman Mark Vientos was scratched from the New York Mets' lineup Friday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers because of abdominal soreness.
Vientos had been set to bat second against left-hander Clayton Kershaw. But about 65 minutes before the first pitch at rainy Citi Field, the Mets announced Vientos wouldn't start.
Brett Baty shifted from second base to third and rookie Luisangel Acuna was inserted into the lineup at second base, batting ninth. Designated hitter Starling Marte moved from fifth in the order to the No. 2 slot.
The 25-year-old Vientos began the night hitting .232 with five home runs, 18 RBIs and a .674 OPS. He was 6 for 45 (.133) with runners in scoring position this season.
He had three homers and seven RBIs in last year's National League Championship Series against the Dodgers.
In other news, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said pitcher Frankie Montas will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Class A Brooklyn.
Montas, sidelined since spring training with a right lat strain, is scheduled to throw two innings and 30-35 pitches. The right-hander signed a $34 million, two-year contract with the Mets as a free agent in December after spending last season with Cincinnati and Milwaukee. The deal includes a player option for 2026.
Veteran right-hander Paul Blackburn will make one more rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse next week before the Mets must decide whether to reinstate him from the injured list and add him to the active major league roster.
The 31-year-old Blackburn also has been out all season. He is on the 15-day IL with right knee inflammation.
Blackburn is 1-2 with a 3.91 ERA in 23 innings over six minor league starts across three levels this year. He threw seven shutout innings of one-hit ball Wednesday for Syracuse in a win against Rochester.

Mets Trade Idea Adds $3.85 Million All-Star Outfielder After Mark Vientos News
Mets Trade Idea Adds $3.85 Million All-Star Outfielder After Mark Vientos News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If the Mets hope to avoid a potentially deadly 'June swoon,' they're well aware that they'll be doing so without third baseman Mark Vientos. Advertisement The Mets placed Vientos on the injured list Tuesday afternoon, less than a day after he hurt his hamstring in a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Former top prospect Ronny Mauricio subsequently rejoined the big-league club and went 0-for-4 in Tuesday's 6-5 walk-off loss. Although Vientos hit just .230 with a .678 OPS and -0.3 bWAR, his injury is nonetheless a reminder that life in the majors changes quickly—and it should incentivize the Mets to pursue a trade for Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran. No, Duran can't replace Vientos' presence at third. Duran, a 2024 All-Star, is a natural outfielder in his first season manning left field on an everyday basis. Boston Red Sox left fielder Jarren DuranBrian Fluharty-Imagn Images However, Duran is a dangerous bat who fits the Mets' center field hole. The speedy lefty enters Wednesday hitting .273 with 17 doubles, six triples, and a .743 OPS for a fourth-place Red Sox club. Advertisement An outfield featuring Duran, Brandon Nimmo, and the inconsistent Juan Soto sounds good to us. At least Soto is 6-for-18 with three homers and a 1.399 OPS in his last five games after a dreadful (by his standards and expectations) first two months. There is no time like the present to be aggressive. The Athletic reported earlier this week that the San Diego Padres are interested in Duran, who potentially has three seasons of team control left. Boston has a $8 million club option on Duran for 2026, and he has two years of arbitration remaining. The Mets hold a half-game lead over the rival Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East, and all signs point to it being a heated divisional race all summer. Now is the time to strike and add Duran to a lineup needing both a center fielder and one more potent hitter. Elizabeth Szokol, Ilhee Lee shoot 62s to share the lead in the ShopRite LPGA Classic
Associated Press GALLOWAY, N.J. (AP) — Elizabeth Szokol birdied the first five holes and shot an 8-under 62 on Friday for a share of the first-round lead with Ilhee Lee in the ShopRite LPGA Classic. Playing in the afternoon on Seaview's Bay Course, Szokol followed her opening birdie run with a bogey on No. 6, then added birdies on Nos. 8, 9, 13 and 16. 'Happy to get off to a great start and really looking forward to the weekend,' Szokol said. 'Lots of golf left. Really excited to see good golf and hard work paying off today.' Akie Iwai of Japan was third after a 65 in one of only two 54-hole tournaments left on the LPGA Tour schedule. The other is the Walmart NW Arkansas Open. 'Normally four days, so I feel fast, shorter tournament,' Iwai said. 'That's why we must make a lot birdies.' Wei-Ling Hsu was at 66 with Aline Krauter, Ayaka Furue, Polly Mack, Saki Baba, Dewi Weber and Gurleen Kaur. Defending champion Linnea Strom shot 72. ___ AP golf:

De La Cruz out of Reds' lineup against Arizona after flight from Dominican Republic canceled
Associated Press CINCINNATI (AP) — Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz will not be in the lineup for Cincinnati's series opener against Arizona on Friday night after his flight from the Dominican Republic, where he was mourning the death of his older sister, was canceled. The 23-year-old De La Cruz returned to the Dominican after Wednesday's 9-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. He was not placed on the bereavement list and was expected to be back in Cincinnati late Friday. 'He was actually trying to get here in time for the game, but one of his flights got canceled, so he's getting here later,' Reds manager Terry Francona said. The Reds got a boost to the lineup Friday when first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand was reinstated from the 10-day injured list. He had been on the IL since April 17 due to back inflammation. Second baseman Matt McLain moved to short in place of De La Cruz, and Garrett Hampson was set to play second base against the Diamondbacks. ___ AP MLB: recommended
