Six p-hailing riders win praise from cops for nabbing snatch thief

MELAKA: Six p-hailing riders who helped the police apprehend a suspected snatch thief last week were today presented with Certificates of Appreciation by Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar.
The certificates were handed out during the Melaka police chief's monthly assembly at the Melaka contingent police headquarters in Bukit Beruang.
Recipient Muhammad Haikal Mohd Yassin, 22, said he had not expected any form of recognition.
He said his only intention was to assist the police in apprehending the suspect. Nonetheless, he expressed pride in receiving the certificate.
"It was indeed challenging, and I had to struggle to catch the suspect, who was aggressive and resisted fiercely in an attempt to escape, before other riders and policemen arrived," he said.
"My intention was merely to help the police because the man's actions tarnished the image of workers like us," he added.
Recalling the incident, Haikal said he and his friends had rushed to a supermarket after being alerted by a colleague about a snatch theft at 12.16pm.
"By the time we arrived, the suspect was no longer there, so we made our way to Malim. We later crossed paths with the suspect, who became aggressive and kicked our motorcycles during the chase.
"I kept close behind his motorcycle until he lost control and crashed. He tried to flee on foot, but I managed to apprehend him," he said.
Another rider, Abdul Aziz Ibrahim, 55, said he had been contacted by the police last Monday regarding allegations that a man, suspected of being a p-hailing rider, was involved in robbery and snatch theft activities.
"My friends and I then created a WhatsApp group to help track down the suspect. On the day of the incident, I rushed to the location as soon as I received word about the theft, and we successfully detained the man," he said.
He added that they had long been aware of the suspect's criminal activities and were relieved that he was finally arrested on April 23.
"We discovered that the man had been using the image of a food delivery worker to mask his activities.
"Thank you to the police for this recognition. We will continue to work closely with the authorities to curb crime," he said.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A fatal road accident involving three vehicles at Paya Rumput, Melaka, this morning has led to the discovery of more than 460 packets of drugs, police said. 'A total of 462 packets were seized, comprising 450 packets of heroin weighing 688.81gm and 12 packets of methamphetamine weighing 13.41gm,' he said.

Melaka considers ban on vape sales

Police say more states should ban the sale of e-cigarettes and vapes as they are becoming increasingly linked to the abuse of new synthetic drugs. (Bernama pic) MELAKA : Melaka police are proposing that the state government ban the sale of vape products to curb the threat of synthetic drugs being misused through electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes. Melaka police chief Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said this follows several arrests where vape liquids were found to contain illegal substances like ketamine. He added that the police are increasingly concerned about the rise in the use of vapes among school students and adults, Bernama reported. 'We are still in the process of preparing a proposal for a ban on the sale of vape products that will be submitted in the near future,' he said at the Melaka police headquarters. 'We are doing this because of the health and social issues involved with vaping, especially among teenagers. He added that the proposal will also consider the economic impact if vape sales are banned. Terengganu, Perlis and Kedah have moved to ban the sale of vape products and e-cigarettes, joining Johor and Kelantan which have imposed such a ban for years now. Last week, Negeri Sembilan also said it was considering a ban on the sale of vape products and electronic cigarettes in the state. On May 20, the Selangor government ordered all local councils to seize and remove advertisements related to vape products to curb the use of e-cigarettes. Last month, deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said more states should ban the sale of e-cigarettes and vapes as they were becoming increasingly linked to the abuse of new synthetic drugs. Ayob said students as young as 13 have been caught using vapes containing substances mixed with drugs, and that fentanyl-laced vape liquids have been found with effects 100 times stronger and more dangerous than morphine.

A couple of ‘Bonnie-and-Clyde' drug syndicates busted by Melaka police

MELAKA: Melaka police busted two inconspicuous drug distribution syndicates in the state involving couples who support their high-flying lifestyle through ill-gotten gains, with a total seizure estimated at RM395,020. Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the first arrest involved a couple of lovers involving a foreign partner in a collusion of crime, a local man and a 30-year-old Vietnamese woman, operating from a condominium in Jalan Syed Abdul Aziz on May 20, at about 11.10 pm. 'Further investigations involving the two suspects found 70 grammes (g) of ketamine worth RM100 and interrogation of the suspects led police to raid another condominium in Jalan Klebang Kechil. 'Police found various drugs believed to be destined for the local market, namely heroin weighing 2,150gm, syabu (350gm), ketamine (100gm), MDMA (50gm) and 5,500 ecstasy pills,' he said at the Melaka police contingent headquarters (IPK) here today. Dzulkhairi said police also seized property belonging to the suspects worth RM40,020 including a gold necklace, RM280 in cash and a Proton Saga FLX car with the total drug seizure and seizure estimated to be worth RM362,370. He said the syndicate has been active since 2024 and both suspects tested positive for ketamine, while one of the suspects had four previous records related to drug offences. He said the suspects were remanded for seven days starting May 21 and ending today but will be pursuing an extension for further investigations. In another similar 'marriage of convenience' operating under the radar, Dzulkhairi said a second bust involved an unassuming couple comprising a Singaporean man and a local woman aged 38 to 41, who were arrested during a raid at a residence in Bandar Jasin Bestari at 11 am yesterday. He said a police sweep of the couple's house who are only three months into their marriage, revealed 212 ecstasy pills, Erimin 5 pills (42 pills), syabu (13.70g), ganja (10g), ketamine (80g) and liquid ketamine (127.50 millilitres) estimated to be worth RM16,650. 'We also seized property belonging to the couple worth RM16,000 including a Proton Gen 2 car and a SYM Husky motorcycle valued at an estimated RM32,650. 'This syndicate has been active for the past three months and urine tests found both suspects positive for methamphetamine while one had three previous criminal records in Singapore,' he said, adding that both suspects were remanded for seven days from May 27 to June 2. He said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
