Pope Francis to Be Discharged From Hospital Sunday, Doctors Announce

Yahoo22-03-2025

Pope Francis will be discharged from the hospital Sunday following a five-week stay battling chronic lung disease, the pontiff's doctors announced Saturday.
The pope was first admitted to a Rome hospital on Feb. 14 and diagnosed with double pneumonia, but the situation escalated a week later to the point where Francis was in critical condition following an 'asthmatic respiratory crisis.'

In the month since, the 88-year-old pontiff has steadily recovered at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, with his condition stable enough to allow for a planned release on Sunday.
'The Holy Father will be discharged from tomorrow in stable clinical condition with a prescription to partially continue drug therapy and a convalescence and rest period of at least two months,' Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the head of the team taking care of the pope, said Saturday at a press conference. 'Today we are happy to say that tomorrow he will be at home.'
The release will also allow for Frances to resume his holy duties, as his first public appearance since his health ordeal is also scheduled to take place Sunday, the Vatican announced. Presumably before his discharge, Pope Frances will go to the hospital's window around noon Sunday 'for a greeting and to impart his blessing.'
Despite the health issues, Pope Francis' social media has still delivered its #GospelOfTheDay Sunday, which was accompanied by a note from His Holiness thanking well-wishers for their prayers soon after his hospitalization.
'I have recently received many messages of affection, and I have been particularly struck by the letters and drawings from children,' the pope wrote. 'Thank you for your closeness, and for the consoling prayers I have received from all over the world!'

RFK Jr. Fires Entire Panel of Vaccine Experts

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has fired a panel of 17 medical and public health experts that advised the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on vaccine policy, and is expected to replace them with individuales aligned with his own vaccine skepticism. In a statement issued on Monday, the Department of Health and Human Services wrote that the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices will be restaffed with 'new members currently under consideration.' 'A clean sweep is necessary to reestablish public confidence in vaccine science,' Kennedy wrote, alleging the committee — which helped coordinate the CDC's annual flu prevention program — had been compromised by conflicts of interest. Members of the committee are required to file ethics disclosures, which are prominently displayed on its website. 'The Biden administration appointed all of the 17 sitting ACIP members. Thirteen of them were appointed in 2024. These appointments would have prevented the current administration from choosing a majority of the committee until 2028,' Kennedy added. The move comes after Kennedy promised Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) that he would make no changes to the committee in order to secure the senator's support for his confirmation. Earlier this year, the annual meeting of the ACIP was postponed without explanation and rescheduled for June. The months-long delay prompted concerns that the timeline for passing along recommendations to manufacturers and communicating with insurance companies would have negative repercussions to patients. In an opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal, Kennedy wrote that 'the new members won't directly work for the vaccine industry. They will exercise independent judgment, refuse to serve as a rubber stamp, and foster a culture of critical inquiry — unafraid to ask hard questions.' Last month, Kennedy's 'Make America Healthy Again' commission released a report that reiterated his own conspiracies about vaccines — and was riddled with citation errors and outright fake research. The so-called MAHA report alluded to disproven claims from vaccine skeptics that the vaccine schedule recommended for children in the United States is overloaded and potentially harmful. The attack against the independent vaccine advisory board is the latest instance in which Kennedy has attempted to mold the nation's leading public health systems around his own pseudoscientific agenda — with the health of millions of Americans in the balance. An OpenAI exec says she was diagnosed with breast cancer and that ChatGPT has helped her navigate it

Kate Rouch, the chief marketing officer at OpenAI, shared on Friday that she was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer weeks after assuming the role, which she called her "dream job," in December. In a thread posted on X, Rouch said she was sharing her story to help other women, adding, "We can't control what happens to us--but we can choose how we face it. My biggest lesson: no one fights alone." Prior to joining OpenAI as the company's first CMO, Rouch was CMO at Coinbase and, before that, spent over a decade at Meta, including as vice president, global head of brand and product marketing. Rouch said she started treatment right around the Super Bowl in February, when OpenAI aired its first-ever ad, and that she has since gone through 13 rounds of chemotherapy while leading OpenAI's marketing team. She wrote that she is expected to make a full recovery. "It has been the hardest season of life — for me, for my husband, and for our two young children," Rouch said, adding she has been supported by OpenAI "at every step." "Silicon Valley can be brutal and transactional. And yet — I've never felt more held," she said, adding that "people showed up in incredible and unexpected ways." Rouch also said OpenAI's ChatGPT has helped her navigate her diagnosis and treatment, including by explaining cancer in a way that is age-appropriate for her kids, helping her manage the side effects of chemo, and creating custom meditations. "Experiencing our work as a patient has made OpenAI's mission feel more personal and important," she said. Rouch said she was sharing her story to encourage other women to "prioritize their health over the demands of families and jobs." "A routine exam saved my life. It could save yours, too," she said. Business Insider reached out to OpenAI for comment. Kevin Weil, the chief product officer at OpenAI, expressed support for Rouch in a reply to her thread. "We love you @kate_rouch!" he wrote. "Proud of you for telling your story and for being so full of fight."

Trump Golf Club Calls Piss-Poor Health Inspection a ‘Politically Motivated Attack'

President Donald Trump's private golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, is claiming to be the victim of a 'politically motivated attack' after receiving a 'conditionally satisfactory' score during a routine health inspection. the Somerset County Department of Health gave Trump's Bedminster Golf Club a score of 32 out of 100 points, and cited 18 food safety violations during an initial inspection that took place May 6. The inspector rated the club's kitchen as 'conditionally satisfactory,' meaning that the establishment needed to fix significant issues with their operations before a random, follow up nspection to fix their 'C' grade. The citations, which were first reported by Forbes, included a comment from the inspector that the 'Person in Charge' (PIC) — in this case Chef Andy Kotarski — 'fails to demonstrate knowledge of food safety,' and lacked a manager-level certificate indicating they had gone through proper training. In fact, the inspector wrote that 'no one at the facility [had a] Food manager level certification at the time of inspections.' Other violations included the absence of soap and paper towels next to sinks for staff to wash their hands in, missing 'employees must wash hands' signs, expired milk in the fridge, raw meats stored in a manner that risked cross-contamination with other ready to eat food items, improperly stored items, and other sanitation violations regarding the required temperature of dishwashers, the handling of cleaning supplies, and employee bathrooms. Some of the issues were fixed during the inspection, but others were not resolved until a follow-up review that took place this week — in which the club was granted a rating of 86/100 — an upgrade from a 'C' to a 'B.' Some issues still remained. The inspector marked that some food preparation surfaces were not properly cleaned and sanitized, and that food required to be 'temperature controlled' to avoid bacteria growth were not 'maintained at 'refrigeration temperatures.'' In a statement to The New York Times, Bedminster General Manager David Schutzenhofer said that 'this is clearly nothing more than a politically motivated attack.' 'Never before have we witnessed such visceral hostility from the Health Department,' Schutzenhofer added. 'We operate one of the most immaculate golf facilities in the country, and we take immense pride in our standards of cleanliness, safety and hospitality.' Given that the president is infamous for throwing his meals across the room in fits of rage, one could be forgiven for suspecting that food safety standards are not top-of-mind at the Trump organization.
