Nigeria: Kwara govt commends organisations over support for women
The Kwara State Government has commended private organisations for their role in supporting technology and innovation in the state and Nigeria.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony for 45 trainees of the Webfala Digital Skills for All Initiative (WDSFAI)'s 'Keeping Female in STEM' programme in Ilorin, the Special Assistant on Digital Innovations to the Kwara State Governor, Hon. Kayode Ishola, commended WDSFAI while he described STEM as the foundation of modern society.
The governor's aide emphasised the need to encourage more women to participate in technology fields.
'Increasing female participation in STEM fields will not only bridge the gender gap but also contribute significantly to Nigeria's economic growth and technological advancement,' he said. He further encouraged the graduates to continually seek professional training and networking opportunities to advance their respective careers.
Also speaking, the Executive Director of WDSFAI, Nafisat Bakare, who said that the programme is an initiative aimed to empower unemployed female graduates with relevant digital skills, added that the group is committed to bridging the gender gap in Nigeria's tech ecosystem.
Bakare said that the graduates received four months of intensive training in either software development (backend), cybersecurity or data science, in addition to training in soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and branding.

'Following the completion of their training, our fellows sat for professional examinations and thereafter proceeded on a three-month internship at various tech companies in the country, where they further honed their skills,' she added.
Speaking further, she emphasised the importance of empowering young women with digital and STEM-related skills to enable them to compete effectively in the rapidly evolving technology industry, where she said women are underrepresented.
She highlighted the persistent challenges women face in the sector and restated her organisation's commitment to bridging the gender divide in the tech industry by empowering more females through quality training and mentorship.
'Our mission is to ensure that more women and girls are not only introduced to STEM but also retained in the field, where they can build successful careers. The Keeping Female in STEM programme is designed to provide young women with the necessary digital skills, mentorship, and opportunities to thrive in the tech ecosystem,' Bakare said.
She further called on stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector players, and educational institutions, to support initiatives aimed at empowering women in technology.

Uncertainty surrounding global tariffs is unlikely to shake up the top tier of best-selling smartphones, after Apple dominated in the first quarter of 2025, a study from Counterpoint Research has shown. The iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro were the top three best-selling smartphones, respectively, in the three months up to March 31, continuing a pattern over the past two years, the Hong Kong-based firm said in its report. The iPhone 15 was fourth and the iPhone 16 Plus was 10th, marking a fifth straight March quarter in which Apple secured half of the spots in the top 10. That was further complemented by the "strong start" of the budget-friendly iPhone 16e – the successor to the iPhone SE that was unveiled in February – which ranked sixth in March. The iPhone 16 performed particularly well in the Middle East, Africa and Japan, which recorded the highest growth, owing to improving economic conditions and revised subsidy rules that favoured Apple's pricing strategy, Counterpoint said. In China, however, the iPhone 16 Pro had to deal with challenges, including home-grown competition such as Huawei Technologies, which offer cheaper devices, and a consumer market generally favouring devices below 6,000 yuan ($833). The base iPhone 16 starts at $799. Right behind Apple is Samsung Electronics, which occupies four spots in the top 10, three of which are mid-tier devices. That is an indication of the South Korean company's strength in this segment. Its latest top-end flagship phone, the Galaxy S25 Ultra, came in seventh. The device, along with iPhones, are classified as premium by Counterpoint. And despite the continuing tariff tensions and broader market uncertainty, the share of the 10 best-selling smartphones is expected to "remain relatively stable", analysts at Counterpoint said. "This resilience is supported by OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] increasingly focusing on high-end smartphones where consumer interest is driven by premium features," they added. Smartphones remain the most popular and important consumer electronic devices. They have become an essential tool for communication, business, education and other daily activities. With the rise of generative artificial intelligence, phone manufacturers – particularly Apple and Samsung – are looking for ways to incorporate the latest technologies to entice a wider consumer base. Apple's iPhone 15 was the world's top-selling smartphone in 2024, outclassing competition largely focused on capitalising on the steady rise of generative AI in mobile devices, Counterpoint reported previously.

Apple investors seek clarity on tariffs, AI strategy as iPhone sales decline
Apple is expected to face a string of questions over the delayed roll-out of key AI features and the impact of the Sino-U.S. tariff standoff on its business, when it reports results on Thursday. Even as Apple benefited from a rush of orders for its recently launched lower-priced iPhone 16e in the January-March period ahead of potential tariffs, Wall Street analysts still expect the company will report a small fall in iPhone sales. That would mark a second straight quarter of declines. The Trump administration has so far spared electronics from tariffs, but Washington has signaled that some levies could come in the coming weeks. The uncertainty has sent shares of Apple, which makes 90% of its products in China, down more than 16% this year, and wiping off over $600 billion from its market value. Apple will try to mitigate tariffs by shifting production of U.S.-bound iPhones to India, Reuters has reported. Analysts expect the company to spread some of the tariff costs through its supply chain, while keeping price increases to a minimum to avoid losing market share. "Tariffs are a sword of Damocles for Apple – dangling, disruptive and politically charged," said Eric Schiffer, chairman of Patriarch Organization, a California-based private equity firm that holds Apple shares. Unlike rivals such as Samsung and Alphabet's Google, Apple has also been slow to roll out some important AI features it promised last year at its developer conference. Growth will likely be driven by upbeat iPad demand and growth in the services business. IPad sales are expected to rise 9.1% in the second quarter, while the services business, Apple's biggest revenue generator after the iPhone, will likely grow 11.8%.
