'Forgotten' Brennan's return a boost for Tyrone

BBC News28-01-2025

Oisin McConville believes the return of Trillick's Rory Brennan to the Tyrone squad since Malachy O'Rourke arrival as manager can boost the Red Hands.Brennan was a constant in the Tyrone panel between 2016 and 2022 and won an All-Ireland medal in 2021 although he didn't feature in the final against Mayo.He opted out of the Tyrone squad after the 2022 season but has now returned and he came on a second-half substitute in Saturday's opening Allianz Division One League win over Derry."Rory Brennan was very much a forgotten player and how good he was when he was going well. It was good to see him back," McConville told The GAA Social on BBC Sounds. The resident GAA Social contributor was also impressed by corner-back Michael McKernan's display against Derry which included notching 1-2.McKernan has always been keen to help the Tyrone attack and McConville believes the new 3v3 rule will give the corner-back even more licence to roam forward."Michael McKernan will have the freedom to go forward a bit now because you know you're definitely covered at the back."McConville added that Derry "didn't seem flustered" after losing the game."They are obviously still getting used to Paddy Tally. It was probably more important for Malachy O'Rourke to get that win at home."I was impressed with Tyrone and I wouldn't have expected anything else even though they were missing their Errigal Ciaran players. "They looked as if they have a good bit done. It was an impressive win because they struggled in Division One last year."

Caitlin Clark, Napheesa Collier named WNBA All-Star Game captains

With the title of captain comes responsibilities. Clark and Collier will be tasked with drafting their All-Star teams playground-style from a pool of eight starters and 12 reserves. The remaining eight starters -- selected by fan votes (50%), current WNBA players (25%) and media members (25%) -- will be announced on Monday, June 30, while the 12 All-Star reserves will be selected by the league's head coaches on July 6. The WNBA All-Star Game draft will be broadcast on "WNBA Countdown Presented by Google" on July 8. The Fever shared a social media video of WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announcing the news to Clark and the Fever. "Caitlin, I just want to personally congratulate you on being named captain for the 2025 WNBA All-Star team," Engelbert said over the phone, which was held by Fever head coach Stephanie White. Clark's teammates cheered and applauded. When Engelbert sent her best wishes for the upcoming 2025 WNBA Commissioner's Cup final, Clark candidly replied, "We about to get that dub Cathy." Clark's availability for the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game will be something to monitor. Clark has missed a career-high seven games this season due to injury, including the Fever's last two games due to a left groin injury. Her status for the Fever's Commissioner's Cup championship game vs. the Lynx remains unclear. In the first returns of fan voting earlier this month, Fever center Aliyah Boston was ranked third, trailing Clark and Collier. Will Clark and Boston team up again? We'll have to wait and see. Clark is averaging 18.2 points and 8.9 assists per game, which marks a career-high. Collier learned she was an 2025 All-Star captain by way of her three-year-old daughter Mila, who wore a shirt that read, "Mama, you're a All-Star." Collier's husband Alex Bazzell was also involved in the unveiling, saying he's "incredibly proud. She's earned it. We're excited about it and hopefully more and more to come." called in friends and family to break the news. ???? — Minnesota Lynx (@minnesotalynx) June 29, 2025 Collier has led the Lynx to a league-best 13-2 record while averaging a league-high 24.5 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game, the fourth-highest in the league. She's a frontrunner for the 2025 WNBA MVP award. Clark and Collier faced off against each other in the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game, where Clark and Team WNBA handed the U.S. women's national team a loss before they went to the 2024 Paris Olympics and won another gold medal. Collier was held scoreless in three minutes of work off the bench for Team USA, while Clark had four points (2-of-9 FG, 0-of-7 3PT) and 10 assists in 26 minutes of work. Tomos Williams ruled out of Lions tour in major setback

Elsewhere in the backline, Farrell reprises the wing combination of Tommy Freeman and Duhan van der Merwe, who started in the 28-24 loss to Argentina. In the centres, Ireland's Bundee Aki partners Huw Jones who makes his first start of the tour. In the front row, there are first starts for Andrew Porter, Ronan Kelleher and Will Stuart with Itoje partnering Ollie Chessum in an all English second row partnership. Jack Conan makes his first start in an athletic back row with Morgan and Curry. There are five English players on the bench - Luke Cowan-Dickie, Ellis Genge, Ben Earl, Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith - alongside three Irish players in Finlay Bealham, Garry Ringrose and James Ryan who could make his first appearance of the tour. It means the only players not to have featured so far are White and Blair Kinghorn, who won the Top 14 with Toulouse on Saturday and is joining the squad later on Monday. The Reds are set to provide a sterner examination of Farrell's side as they approach the three-Test series against Australia which begins on 19 July. 'We know each game on this Tour will be a step up from the game before and three more players are set to make their Lions debuts on Wednesday night, so congratulations to those guys,' Farrell said. Meanwhile, the Wallabies have released prop Taniela Tupou to join up with the New South Wales Waratahs who face the Lions on Saturday, indicating that the tighthead, nicknamed the Tongan Thor, is unlikely to be a part of Joe Schmidt's side for the Test series. 'What's to be gained by slating people? It's the easiest thing in the world'

Kerry boss Jack O'Connor hit back at his team's detractors after the Kingdom surged into the All-Ireland semi-finals in spectacular style with a 0-32 to 1-21 win over Armagh at Croke Park. The Munster champions breathed new life into their bid for a 39th Sam Maguire Cup by knocking out the holders with a performance that extinguished the hurt of their shock group stage defeat by O'Connor praised his side's performance, he took aim at a Sunday Independent column written by former Derry footballer Joe Brolly that clearly irked him in the lead-up to the quarter-final. "One of the great motivators in life is trying to prove people wrong. We were being portrayed as a one-man team," said O'Connor. "I saw somebody writing this morning that said the only Kerry player worthy of being called a Kerry player was David Clifford."Now, David is a great player but David will tell you that there was a fair supporting cast there today."We think we have a lot of good footballers but I think sometimes we're being judged on different criteria to other teams."O'Connor, who has led Kerry to four All-Ireland titles across three spells in charge, added he "didn't see any ex-Dublin players coming out slating the team" after their shock Leinster semi-final loss to Kerry's 1-22 to 0-16 loss to Meath in Tullamore, the Kingdom's six-time All-Ireland winner Darragh O Se was critical of O'Connor's team in the Irish Times, writing they didn't take the game "seriously enough". "Unfortunately a few pundits down our way let themselves down in that regard," added the Kerry boss."I'm not giving out about it from my own point of view. What's to be gained by slating people? It's the easiest thing in the world. I'm in the business of building people up. I'm not in the business of knocking people."O'Connor outlined that he has "spent all my life coaching underage school kids, minors, Under-21s, seniors, at every level"."I'd ask people who are knocking that group and knocking people involved with the group to look in the mirror and say, 'What have you contributed?"What have you contributed to Kerry football off the field? "Go away and coach a team. Go away and coach a development squad. Go away and coach a minor team. That's how you help Kerry football, not knocking people."
