When Sholay hit theatres in August 1975, few could've predicted that it would go on to define an era—and remain etched in the hearts of generations to come. As the legendary film marks its 50th anniversary this year, fascinating details from behind the scenes have resurfaced, offering a glimpse into its making and the people who brought it to life.
Financially, the film's cast was paid modestly by today's standards.
Dharmendra
was reportedly the highest-paid actor on the sets, receiving ₹1.5 lakh for his portrayal of Veeru. Sanjeev Kumar, who embodied the resilient Thakur Baldev Singh, was paid ₹1.25 lakh, while Amitabh Bachchan—now a towering figure in Indian cinema—was paid ₹1 lakh for his role as Jai. The menacing yet unforgettable
Gabbar Singh
, played by Amjad Khan, earned him ₹50,000.
Among the leading ladies, Hema Malini took home ₹75,000, whereas Jaya Bachchan received the least—just ₹35,000.
In a recent interview, Dharmendra opened up about how Amitabh Bachchan came to be cast as Jai. Surprisingly, the role was initially intended for Shatrughan Sinha. Dharmendra, however, advocated for Amitabh. Recounting the moment, he shared, 'Amitabh used to come meet me often and sit by my side. I once told
Ramesh Sippy
ji, 'This new boy, listen to his voice—he has something special. He has this fire, this inner drive. Take him.'' The veteran actor revealed that he never claimed credit openly, but it was his quiet endorsement that helped Bachchan land the iconic part.
Reflecting on the experience of working on Sholay, Dharmendra fondly remarked, 'This film, I believe, is made for centuries to come.' His sentiment echoes the timeless impact the film continues to have, half a century after its release.

‘Victory for India': Muslim cleric praises Operation Sindhu amid Iran-Israel conflict escalation

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, prominent Muslim cleric Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi has praised the Indian government's swift response in evacuating its citizens from the war-hit region under 'Operation Sindhu'. Speaking to IANS from Bareilly, Razvi lauded the efforts, calling it a "victory for India" and a reminder of the government's commitment to protect its people. "Many Indian students and others were stranded in Iran for studies or pilgrimage. Their families were deeply distressed. The successful evacuation has brought immense relief to parents and relatives. We must appreciate the Indian government for taking timely action," Razvi said. Meanwhile, in a separate and strongly worded statement, Maulana Razvi targeted actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh for the casting of Pakistani actors, including Hania Amir, in his upcoming film 'Sardaar Ji 3'. He questioned the rationale behind choosing Pakistani talent, particularly at a time when tensions with Pakistan remain high. "Why couldn't Diljit find Indian actors? Why give opportunities to those from a country that harbours terrorists and has caused immense pain to India?" Razvi said, referencing the 26 Indian civilians killed in a terror attack in Pahalgam, which was planned by Pakistan-based terror groups. "This film sends the wrong message to Indian society", he noted. Razvi further recalled India's strong retaliation in the form of 'Operation Sindoor', which targeted terror infrastructure deep inside Pakistan. Calling for a boycott of 'Sardaar Ji 3', Razvi urged the Indian government to ban the film and initiate legal action against Diljit Dosanjh and the involved actors. "This isn't just about a movie; it's about national sentiment and respect for our martyrs," he said. 'Sardaar Ji 3' is set to release on June 27 and features popular Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, whose casting has stirred criticism on social media due to the recent Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. Notably, India had implemented a ban on Pakistani actors and content on various platforms, including OTT services and social media, citing national security concerns during Operation Sindoor.

Sitaare Zameen Par , a spiritual successor to Taare Zameen Par, but with a fresh, contemporary lens and emotional depth that resonates even stronger in today's context. In an industry that thrives on trends, he's proven that authenticity still wins hearts. With critics raving and audiences returning to theatres, Sitaare Zameen Par is more than just a film, it's a statement. For those who had counted Aamir out, this comeback is a masterclass in patience, reinvention, and courage. And if this is the direction he's taking his second innings in, Bollywood better buckle up. The perfectionist is not just back, he's back with a bang. About Sitaare Zameen Par Aamir Khan has brought about the idea of special kids in sports and the hurdles that a coach faces in dealing with them. It's a direct remake of the English sports comedy-drama film, Campeones. Though it replicates the original's narrative structure of the Spanish version, but it has a very Indianised set-up understanding the Indian sentiments and the common man's outlook towards specially challenged kids.
