Police clamping down on drug mules at OR Tambo

Last night, the South African Police Service reported that three alleged drug mules were arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in one week. Two of the arrests took place on 10 June 2025. In the first arrest, SAPS intercepted a 30-year-old Brazilian national who had landed from São Paulo. She confessed that she had ingested more than 100 cocaine-filled bullets. 'Later the same day, police intercepted a 57-year-old Ethiopian national at the airport's check-in counter before he could board a flight out of the country. A search of the suspect's luggage uncovered over 90 kilograms of Khat,' said police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk. On 5 June 2025, a 42-year-old Nigerian national was arrested on charges of drug trafficking upon arrival at the airport. He had travelled from São Paulo and was en route to Nigeria. 'The drug trafficker landed at 07:00 when he was intercepted by police officers at the airport. A medical x-ray confirmed that he had ingested more than 70 drug bullets suspected to contain cocaine,' said van Wyk. All three suspects are due to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates' Court on charges of drug trafficking. Last month, The South African brought you the story of a 39-year-old Brazilian national who was found in possession of R 1,4 million worth of cocaine wrapped around his legs. He too was intercepted at OR Tambo after travelling from São Paulo. He told police he was in transit to Benin. At the time, police reported that they were intensifying their efforts to clamp down on the illicit trade of drugs and they had made significant arrests. 'SAPS has intercepted more than 23 drug traffickers at this port of entry in the past six months,' concluded van Wyk. New allowance for investigators as police invest in crime-fighting efforts

JOHANNESBURG - Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu said more work needs to be done to ensure the safety of all South Africans. Mchunu briefed the media on Friday morning to highlight some changes that will be implemented to enhance service delivery in the South African Police Service (SAPS). Mchunu said, despite a decrease in crime during the fourth quarter, police need to increase crime-fighting. 'We know that we're still far from getting to the level where we want to get to, and satisfying that criteria where people must say we feel safe now in South Africa. When we are in our homes, when we walk around and all of that, we still have a lot of work to do in that area, but it was worth noting that we now have this consistency of decreases in crime that are reported in police stations as reflected on our crime stats for the fourth quarter.' The interventions announced include the introduction of new allowances, this is in a bid to retain skills in high-risk environments. National Commissioner Fannie Masemola said the detective investigator scarce skills allowance will be allocated to members of the National Intervention Unit (NIU). He explained that this unit mainly responds to high-risk incidents, such as cash-in-transit armed robberies and ATM bombings. 'Later on, this morning [Friday], we will be conferring the operators' badge to 35 qualifying NIU members that have undergone the necessary training to serve in this elite unit. We are also pleased to announce that there will be an increase.'

South African police commit to increasing personnel to combat rising crime

Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu discussed key priorities to improve service delivery in the South African Police Service. Image: SAPS The country's safety lies in the hands of unqualified politicians who claim to be experts in the field of safety and security in our country, remarked Aidan David, the chairperson of the eThekwini district policing board. David was commenting on Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu's discussions around human resources management issues in Pretoria on Friday. Mchunu said the Ministry received an elaborate orientation from the SAPS top management, taking stock of the portfolio, various programmes aimed at fighting crime, as well as the SAPS organogram, which had several shortcomings. He stated that the recent crime statistics indicate a decrease in the number of crimes, but the sentiments expressed by citizens, which he agreed with, are that the crime levels in the country are far too high. Next Stay Close ✕ Murder, the proliferation of illegal firearms, and drug trafficking are but a few of the critical crimes the SAPS has prioritised. Mchunu stated that they have identified several critical enablers to support and strengthen the fight against crime. These include: The adoption and improvement of technology. The strengthening of Crime Intelligence. Capacitating and upskilling our detectives. The expansion and upgrading of forensic services. Improving our fleet management and infrastructure. Enhancing the overall working environment for police officers. 'To give full effect to these enablers, we have engaged SAPS top management and organised labour on proposed changes to the organisational structure. All the necessary consultation processes have been finalised within the safety and security sectoral bargaining council,' he said. The changes to be implemented include: The Visible Policing Division has been restructured into two separate divisions: Visible Policing and Operational Response Services. Detective and Forensic Services will be split into two distinct divisions: Detective Services and Forensic Services. Mchunu said the SAPS and the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime are currently running a pilot project at the Grassy Park police station in the Western Cape, where a dedicated legal professional has been placed on site to assist with case development, statement taking, and legal support. 'This project has yielded promising results and serves as a critical turning point in our fight against organised crime and gang violence. We are looking to expand the project nationwide. The current backlog experienced in the promotion of members is also being addressed. 'We note with concern that there are members of the SAPS who persist in engaging in corrupt activities as evidenced by the 392 dismissals in the previous financial year; the number is significantly lower in this financial year,' he said. David stated that as long as President Cyril Ramaphosa appoints comrades instead of qualified police officials, crime will continue to spiral out of control. 'All these speeches have become generic jargon from the past, and still the politicians who unfortunately are the powerhouse of decision makers do not have the qualifications to decide and neither do they consult with the community via the Community Policing Forum structures to make a correct decision in keeping our communities safe,' David said. He was concerned that there are no meritorious promotions done at all in the SAPS, and he felt that at the SAPS, everything is about contacts and comrades, which David hoped would change. General Fannie Masemola, the national commissioner of police, stated they remain hard at work and in the past three years, the SAPS has added 30,393 more boots on the ground. According to Masemola, additional detectives will also be deployed to the top 30 high contact crime police stations - these are stations that are experiencing high levels of contact crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, GBVF, and assault cases.
