CdM boys' lacrosse caps undefeated league season with win over rival

Corona del Mar took care of the last two things on its list before the truly important games arrive, a mere formality for the boys' lacrosse powerhouse, perhaps, but significant nonetheless.
Garrett Ip and Owen Majit led the fifth-ranked Sea Kings to a 16-5 home triumph Friday afternoon over archrival Newport Harbor to make it 14 of 15 Battle of the Bay conquests and complete their fifth successive Sunset League title run.
Now, after a final tuneup Wednesday at No. 7 Foothill, it's on to the big stuff.
'We always have our eyes set on that CIF championship, and I think that's always the goal here at CdM,' said Ip, a senior attacker and midfielder who was a freshman reserve when the Sea Kings won their third Southern Section title in 2022. 'Winning league's very important, but we have our eyes on the prize.'
The rivalry?
'It's fun,' Charlie Hamilton, a co-captain alongside Ip and Jake Card. 'It's still a rivalry. Every other sport is always intense, but it's good to get off your shoulder. It's just fun. And winning league is a goal we have, and it's nice to get it done.'
The Battle of the Bay is 'a special thing,' said Corona del Mar head coach G.W. Mix — 'it's meaningful to the kids' — but more so something of an annual rite for the lacrosse team, which has wholly dominated the series, with 19 victories in 20 meetings since the Southern Section certified the sport in 2007, eight of the last 10 by double digits. The result was not unexpected.
'We talk to the kids about that, particularly this time of year,' Mix said. 'It's far more important that we get better than we focus on the Battle of the Bay and sinking the Sailors and all of that other hullabaloo that goes along with it.'
The Sea Kings (14-5, 4-0 in the Sunset League) have won three CIF Southern Section titles — in 2012 and 2016 before the Southern Section began administrating the postseason and again three years ago. They've since reached the semifinals and quarterfinals and will face stiff competition, primarily from several Catholic powerhouses. Brackets will be revealed next Friday.
Ip and Majit are returning All-CIF standouts headed for elite liberal arts colleges in New England to play for top NCAA Division III schools — Ip to Williams, Majit to Bowdoin — who have played together since third grade. Mix says 'they're incredibly skilled with the stick, incredibly quick and fast, and that's a deadly combination for an offensive player [who] understands the game really, really well.'
'They work all the time,' said Mix, whose nearly five decades in the game includes stints as head coach of two NCAA programs, as president and general manager of the late Major League Lacrosse club L.A. Riptide, and as founder and executive of Surf Dawgs Lacrosse, a Newport Beach-based youth program that has fueled CdM's success and contributed to Newport Harbor's roster. 'They're those kids that when I drive by on a Saturday afternoon and I look through the fence, they're out here shooting. Every weekend in all fall and all summer. The best players we've had here are the kids that continuously work on their own to get better.
'It's no different in any other sport. You hear that about all the great ones, right? They know what they want to do, and they put their minds and bodies to it, and they get after it. That's what makes those two really special, is that they practice their craft all the time, dodging and shooting and throwing the ball around. The good news is they drag some of the others out there with them, which tends to make us a little better.'
That work ethic, Ip said, is what he admires most about his brother, Logan, who led CdM's 2022 charge and is now a junior midfielder and captain for Harvard's top-10 team.
'He definitely played a big factor [in my development],' he said. 'We used to shoot in the backyard all the time. ... He's a really hard worker, and he's a smart player. He taught me to study both the aspects of playing the game and the mental side of the game.'
Mix calls Logan 'phenomenal, and as good a player as he was, he was every bit as good a leader and every bit as good a human being.' Garrett is 'very similar' to his brother.
Garrett says he is 'better than my brother.'
'Good for him,' Mix said. 'In a lot of ways, he may be, because he's done some things that Logan didn't have to do. Logan had a really good group around him, a lot of good teammates that are all playing Division I lacrosse now. Garrett hasn't had quite the supporting cast, but he's had a bunch of wonderful kids around him, no doubt.'
Ip started Friday's romp a minute and a half in, assisted the first of two Alex Aldoroty goals to double the advantage, then added a fourth just before the end of the first quarter. The Sea Kings had six before Newport Harbor struck, and Mix began emptying his bench after halftime.
Ip and Gavin MacBeth off the bench finished with a hat-trick and two assists, Majit tallied a goal and four assists, and Domingos Alves and Auggy Luong added two goals. Griffin Habermehl and Hamilton led a dominant defense, and Tucker Rosenberger and Card were key in buildup and in counterpress.
Braden Brock led Newport Harbor (6-10, 0-2) with two goals and an assist.
It was CdM's fifth straight Battle of the Bay triumph, by far the tightest of the five. The Sailors' only win in the series was a 5-4 decision in 2019, to win the Sunset League title, and they've not been to the playoffs since. Winning their remaining games — at home Monday against 10th-ranked Los Alamitos (14-3, 2-1) and Wednesday against Huntington Beach (7-8, 0-3) — would give them the Sunset League's other automatic playoff berth.
An at-large berth, otherwise, appears unlikely, acknowledged third-year head coach Blake Lenk, a former Newport Harbor standout. He's playing a longer game. It's a junior-heavy team, and next year looks promising.
'We have a lot of areas to develop,' Lenk said. 'The biggest thing is overall mindset. We look to focus on not tallying wins and losses, but rather tallying wins and lessons, because there's always something to learn every time we get out there on the field.
'They've got a lot to learn, but they bring the effort, attitude, energy. Those are the things we can control. As long as we can keep in control of the things that we can control, we can expect positive results out of them.'
Winning a CIF title 'would be a dream,' said Hamilton, who as a freshman was brought up from junior varsity for the playoff run in 2022. 'We've just got to keep our head down and block out the noise and keep rolling. As long as we worry about ourselves and take care of the small things, I think we'll be fine.'
The other contenders are mostly Catholic schools, led by defending champion Santa Margarita (13-2), Trinity League champion Mater Dei (11-3) and Los Angeles Loyola (17-3), California's top-ranked side.
Loyola is 'a different level,' said Mix, whose team was drilled, 16-4, two weeks prior by the Cubs. They're significant title favorites. The only teams to beat them come from states with deeper lacrosse cultures.
'They've got speed and athleticism and depth,' said Mix, who had Cubs coach Jimmy Borell on his roster during his Riptide tenure. 'I was giving him a hard time after the game, talking about the embarrassment of riches that he has there. But he's got a great culture and a great group of kids. They work hard, play hard, but they're talented. Just big, strong, athletic kids.'
Ip isn't intimidated.
'They're a pretty talented team,' he said. 'But I think I'll take my group of guys up against any group any day of the week.'

Ryan Lochte Could Be Forced Out Of His Florida Home Amid His Divorce From Estranged Wife

The divorce proceedings for Ryan Lochte and his estranged wife, Kayla Reid, have taken a dark turn since the initial news of their separation became public. Now, in a new filing, Reid is demanding sole use of one of their Florida homes, which the Olympic swimmer has pushed back on. In the legal documents, Reid also requested alimony, child support, and primary custody of their three children: Caiden, Liv, and Georgia. According to a report from Us Weekly, Reid, who filed for divorce from the Olympic Gold Medalist in March 2025, recently asked the court to grant her exclusive use of their home in Terrace, Florida. The report explains that Reid needs "the exclusive use of this home and the contents thereof, both now and in the future, for herself and the minor children." As of now, Lochte is reportedly residing at another home worth nearly $450,000, and has been doing so since March of this year. Reid's requests in the filing didn't stop there, though. Us Weekly also reports that the former Playboy Playmate claims Lochte took specific joint assets and income during their marriage and purchased other assets, some of which he put in his name. '[Those] assets are presently being held by [Ryan] in trust for and for all the benefit of [Kayla], and the court should award to [Kayla] her full interest in said assets,' her filing read. Additionally, Reid asked the court for a portion of the money from Lochte's businesses, including Lochte Enterprises LLC and Legendaryswimming LLC, claiming she had contributed significant time and effort to help improve these companies. '[Kayla] makes a claim for equitable distribution of the corporate defendant because she has been of great assistance of [Ryan], only in the marital business but also in terms of providing a home environment which supported [Ryan's] needs in every respect," the filing read. Per Us Weekly, Reid stated that the "marriage of the parties is irretrievably broken" in her divorce filing. The Florida-based real estate agent also stated that she was the primary caretaker of their three children before requesting the court grant her "sole parental responsibility." The 33-year-old also said that she's unable to support their children without Lochte's help and requested that the court award her child support and alimony, adding that she needs 'rehabilitative alimony to assist her financially while acquiring sufficient education, retraining, developing skill and/or improving her employment and income.' Reid's petition also requests that Lochte pay her attorney's fees. In his response, Lochte acknowledged that they own a Florida home together; however, he did not support her request to be granted exclusive use of the estate. He also denied the mother of three's claims about her participation in one of his businesses. The Olympian filed a counter-petition to Reid's divorce filing, too, stating in his documents that their official date of separation was April 2025. Lochte, 40, also requested that the court establish a parenting plan, determine child support, and divide their shared assets. According to a previous report from The Blast, Reid opened up about filing for divorce from Lochte in an Instagram post, where she described the decision to end her marriage as one of the most challenging she's ever had to make. "Earlier this year, I made the hard decision to end my marriage after deep prayer and reflection," Reid wrote online. "I hold marriage in the highest regard, so this has been one of the most painful, revealing, and challenging seasons of my life. I've been hesitant to share until I could do so from a place of healing — not from fresh, open wounds." She continued, "Sometimes we face trials we didn't choose or see coming. And in those moments, we're forced to make the hardest decisions to protect our peace, our children, and our future. I've come to the understanding that staying isn't always the most loving decision someone can make. For me, leaving was an act of love — for those around me and for myself." Lochte also addressed the news in a separate post, where he said divorcing was the "right step toward peace and well-being for us both." "I remain committed to healing, growth, and co-parenting with care and respect as we move forward separately," he finished.

Chicago Bears CEO Kevin Warren pays nearly $2.3M for Lake Forest mansion

In a move sure to lend further credence to the view that the Chicago Bears will build a new stadium in Arlington Heights, Kevin Warren, the team's president and CEO, in May paid $2.25 million for a five-bedroom, 8,725-square-foot shingle-style mansion in Lake Forest. Warren, 61, became the Bears' president and CEO in January 2023 after serving for more than three years as the commissioner of the Rosemont-based Big Ten conference. During his time overseeing the Big Ten, Warren first rented a 21st-floor condo in a building on Lake Shore Drive in Streeterville, and then in 2023, he and his wife, Greta, paid $1.75 million for a three-bedroom, 2,547-square-foot condominium on the 13th floor of the same high-rise. Since June 2021, the Bears have been known to be considering locations for a new stadium, including building a new arena in Arlington Heights on the 326-acre site of the former Arlington Park racetrack — land that the team purchased in 2023. Warren soon emerged as an enthusiastic proponent of the idea of a new stadium on Chicago's lakefront. In April, Warren told reporters that the team had shifted from solely pursuing building a new stadium downtown to considering both downtown and Arlington Heights. 'The focus now is both downtown and Arlington Heights,' Warren said in April. 'One thing I have said before is that these are not linear processes or projects. They take time.' Then, in May, the Tribune broke the news that the team's focus had moved once again, this time to Arlington Heights exclusively. Warren's decision to buy a suburban home is sure to spark speculation that the team now is near-certain to build in Arlington Heights, although Warren's new house also is close to the Bears' Halas Hall headquarters and training complex in Lake Forest. The house Warren purchased has a wraparound deck, a new cedar shake roof, a great room with a 19-foot alder wood ceiling and a Lannon stone fireplace, and a kitchen with high-end appliances, a center island and a breakfast bar. Other features include a private office with a fireplace and and a first-floor primary bedroom suite with a bathroom that has dual vanities and heated stone floors. Downstairs, the lower level has a family room opening to a stone patio, a guest bedroom suite and an exercise room. With Warren now having purchased a place in the northern suburbs, he joins several of his colleagues, including Bears general manager Ryan Poles, who paid $2.077 million in 2023 for a 5,200-square-foot house in Lincolnshire. Recently hired head coach Ben Johnson is not known to have bought a house here yet. The sellers lost money on the Lake Forest mansion. They paid $2.39 million for it in 2015, and they first listed it in 2023 for $2.495 million. They cut their asking price in April 2024 to $2.4 million, and they signed a deal in April with Warren, who closed on the purchase in May through an opaque land trust that masks his identity. The mansion had a $35,839 property tax bill in the 2024 tax year. It also has $295-a-month homeowners association dues. Real estate agent Annie Royster Lenzke, who represented Warren in his purchase, did not respond to a request for comment. Her colleague Dawn McKenna also did not respond to a request for comment.

Liverpool's insane transfer plan BIGGER than Florian Wirtz

Liverpool's transfer plan this summer went bigger than Florian Wirtz. The Reds are close to breaking their transfer record for the German star. Liverpool hope to close a deal for Florian Wirtz before long. The Reds have pushed forward on a club-record transfer with Bayer Leverkusen. Advertisement And that's a shock. Liverpool weren't supposed to be in the running for Wirtz, with Bayern Munich thought to be absolutely certainties to sign him. After all, the Bundesliga champions essentially have a first option on all elite German talent. That's how it seems, at least. But Wirtz chose Liverpool. He rejected Bayern Munich and Manchester City, who wanted a replacement for Kevin De Bruyne. Wonderful news for Liverpool, then, who have surprised everyone with a move of this scale. However, it appears they planned to go even bigger. Florian Wirtz x Rayan Cherki France-based broadcaster Matt Spiro claims Liverpool had a pretty incredible plan. He suggests the Reds tried to sign both Wirtz and Rayan Cherki this summer. Advertisement Certainly, he's not the first to report that Liverpool wanted Cherki. The Athletic claimed last week that Arne Slot flew to France to discuss plans with the French playmaker. Ultimately, Cherki chose Manchester City over the Reds but it appears Liverpool had a grand plan of signing both no.10s for next season. That naturally draws up many more questions: how would they play together? Would the formation change? Who makes way? Who plays where? And we're also disappointed that it won't happen - but not surprised. Wirtz was always the main target over Cherki and the Frenchman would understandably prefer to have more of a starring role at City. Still, we can't help but admire the ambition here. Liverpool tried to make something very special happen and fell just short of it.
