Police captain (59) accused of raping trainees at academy granted R8k bail

JOHANNESBURG - A Pretoria police college captain accused of raping and sexually assaulting trainees has been released on bail. The 59-year-old officer who was arrested for allegedly raping a 20-year-old trainee and sexually assaulting another was granted R8,000 bail by the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Thursday. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) says it is alleged that both incidents, the first in March and the latest just last month, took place in his office at the Pretoria Police Training Academy. In the most recent case, the trainee was allegedly walking with her platoon to the sleeping quarters when she was called aside by the captain. Once inside his office, he allegedly locked the door and told her that if she didn't sleep with him, he'd file a misconduct report for failing to salute him the previous month. IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping says the watchdog has noted a disturbing trend in rape cases involving police officials. 'Reported cases of rape by police officers while on duty is also higher as compared to rape when officers are off duty.'

Police captain accused of raping a 20-year-old woman trainee and sexually assaulting another granted R8,000 bail

The Pretoria magistrate's court has granted R8,000 bail to a 59-year-old police captain from the Pretoria Police Training Academy, who is accused of raping a 20-year-old woman trainee and sexually assaulting another. The officer allegedly raped the trainee on May 6 and sexually assaulted another trainee in March. The incidents allegedly took place in his office at the training college. Police spokesperson Lizzy Suping said on May 6 the 20-year-old trainee was allegedly walking with her colleagues to their sleeping quarters when the captain called her to his office. 'In the office, the captain allegedly locked the door and told the trainee if she did not sleep with him he would serve her with a misconduct letter regarding an incident that allegedly happened in April, where the captain accused the trainee of failing to salute him.' Suping noted that on trends of cases of rape by police officers from the previous financial year, Gauteng is leading with just under 30 cases reported. 'Though other provinces experienced a decline in these cases, Gauteng's cases increased by about 35%. Reported cases of rape by police officers while on duty is also higher compared with rape when officers are off-duty,' she said.

Cape Town Law Enforcement officer arrested on murder and extortion charges

The Law Enforcement officer was arrested on Monday. Image: File The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (known as Hawks) arrested a City of Cape Town Law Enforcement officer on Monday. The arrest, during a multi-disciplinary operation led by the Hawks, Provincial Anti-Kidnapping Unit, and Provincial Organised Crime, resulted in the arrest of the 43-year-old officer on charges of murder, kidnapping, and extortion. The officer is attached to the Anti-Land Invasion Unit. The provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi, said the kidnapping is alleged to have taken place on May 16 in Kraaifontein. 'The victim was last seen by a friend who reported that the victim(friend) went to Bellville to view a vehicle he intended to purchase and never came back. Instead, another friend of the victim received a call from the victim reporting that he had been kidnapped and was being assaulted,' Vukubi said. Simultaneously, the suspects demanded a ransom of R100,000 for the victim's release. The suspects made further phone calls, and the ransom was reduced to R10,000. 'The suspects subsequently provided a bank account where the money should be deposited. It was alleged that an amount of R5,000 was deposited into that bank account, and the suspects continued to demand the balance,' Vukubi said. On May 17, 2025, the team followed all the leads that led them to addresses in Philippi and Kleinvlei, which resulted in the arrest of the four accused: Mogamat Samuels, 33, Thokozani Kamnjunga, 36, Existing Mudivari, 33, and Yasseen Jele, 30, who have already made a court appearance. 'The team was led to an open field on the dunes between Monwabisi Beach and Macassar, where one of the accused pointed out a shallow grave where the victim was killed and buried. Upon further probe, it transpired that the City of Cape Town Law Enforcement vehicle, which was driven by the suspect, was utilised in the commission of this heinous crime,' Vukubi said. The officer is expected to make his first appearance in the Bluedowns Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, June 10, thereafter, he will be joining his co-accused in the dock on June 12.
