Orcas abandoned in shuttered marine park filmed in algae-infested pool months after closure: ‘Must leave now'

New York Post15-05-2025

France's last two captive orcas were filmed stranded in an algae-infested marine park near Cannes months after closing, leaving the fate of the marine mammals uncertain.
Animal activists have circulated footage of the killer whales' plight with the hopes that the French government will rehome them before it's too late.
'The orcas need to be removed from dangerous conditions that are posing significant risks to their health and safety,' pleaded Marketa Schusterova, co-founder of the animal advocacy group TideBreakers, which shared the heartbreaking video, South West News Service reported.

Marineland Antibes had reportedly shuttered on January 5th in line with French bans on dolphin and whale shows enacted in 2021, leaving the two orcas Wikie, 23, and her 11-year-old son Keijo trapped inside their pens along with 12 dolphins.
Heartrending aerial footage shows the cetaceans languishing in algae-choked pools in a derelict stadium like a scene out of a post-apocalyptic Sea World.

'The situation in Marineland Antibes is an emergency and needs worldwide attention,' lamented Schusterova. 'These are the last two remaining orcas in captivity in France and they should be moved quickly.'

Unfortunately, campaigns to rehouse the majestic beasts have so far fallen flat with French authorities blocking efforts to transfer the animals to a marine zoo in Japan.
Meanwhile, Spanish authorities rejected a proposal to move the animals to Loro Parque marine park in Tenerife, Spain, claiming that the facility — which is already home to four orcas — did have enough space to 'house the specimens in optimal conditions,' BBC reported.

Lori Marino, president of The Whale Sanctuary Project (WSP), is currently campaigning to have Wikie and Keijo rehomed to their site in Nova Scotia, Canada, which she feels could be the 'only option left.'
While their previous rehoming plea was rejected by the French Ministry for Ecology earlier this year, the group has re-upped the bid to move them to said sanctuary, which they claim will give them more space to roam than the usual pool.

The team reportedly has experts from a whale sanctuary that was designed to house Keiko — the orca that starred in the 1993 family movie 'Free Willy.'
'If you don't even have a site, you're years away from being a viable sanctuary,' said Marino while arguing why the Novia Scotia location might be the only viable choice. 'We have a whole crew who know how to build and run a sanctuary.'
She added, 'They have done it before and I think we are the only team who has any experience in doing this.'
Time is reportedly running out for the stranded mammals.
Managers at Marineland, which is still legally responsible for the animals until they can be rehomed, stressed that Wikie and Keijo 'must leave now' for their own welfare.
'Marineland reaffirms the extreme urgency of transferring the animals to an operational destination,' they declared.

Unfortunately, releasing Wikie and her son into the wild is not an option as they were 'both born in captivity' and therefore would likely not survive long, according to Schusterova.
'After entertaining the public for years, we should still provide them with a clean and safe environment to live out their remaining years,' she said.

Former prime minister Bennett launches AI-powered public diplomacy campaign

'There is no starvation in Gaza. This is yet another lie from our enemies. Israel must engage in the battle for global perception," Bennett said. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett released a series of videos on Wednesday, created using artificial intelligence, aimed at debunking claims of famine in Gaza. The original video, filmed in English, was dubbed into seven additional languages using AI technology – Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Russian, and Arabic – in an effort to reach diverse global audiences. In the two-minute video, Bennett presents data on the scale of humanitarian aid delivered to the Gaza Strip. His message is clear: 'There is no starvation in Gaza. This is yet another lie from our enemies. Israel must engage in the battle for global perception. Unfortunately, there is no proper public diplomacy, no management – nothing. The stream of lies against IDF soldiers remains unanswered and could lead to arrests abroad, boycotts, and embargoes. Israel was attacked by barbaric murderers on October 7 and is currently fighting a defensive war.' Bennett's team explains that the initiative was born in response to a deteriorating international attitude toward Israel at both the public and governmental levels. 'This campaign fills the void left by the failure of the official state public diplomacy efforts. It confronts the wave of disinformation and lies being spread on social media, often orchestrated by pro-Palestinian organizations and anti-Israel actors,' said sources close to the former prime minister. Since October 7, Bennett has been giving lectures at international universities and appearing on foreign media outlets. The goal now is to influence the narrative in Israel's favor on social media as well. 'If a major event occurs, we'll produce more videos,' said his team, adding: 'We're not a government, but wherever we're needed, we'll be there.'

French wild card Loïs Boisson stuns No. 6 Mirra Andreeva to reach French Open semis

The dream run continues for the 361st-ranked Loïs Boisson at Roland-Garros. After taking down third-seeded Jessica Pegula in the previous round, the French wild-card entry upset sixth-ranked Mirra Andreeva 7-6 (6), 6-3 in front of a boisterous and largely partisan crowd to reach the semifinals of the French Open. A year ago, Boisson tore her left ACL just a week before her home Grand Slam tournament started, preventing her from accepting an invitation to play. She will have the chance to advance to the final when she takes on No. 2 seed Coco Gauff. 'It's incredible, no matter what, given what happened last year and all the difficult moments I went through,' Boisson said during her post-match interview. The 22-year-old Boisson largely was unknown outside tennis circles before capturing the spotlight in Paris. She is playing in her first Grand Slam main draw and became the first woman to reach the semifinals at her debut major tournament since 1989, when Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati both did it at the French Open. She is also the youngest French semifinalist at a Grand Slam event since Amélie Mauresmo at Wimbledon in 1999. The last Frenchwoman to win the title at Roland-Garros was Mary Pierce, 25 years ago. 'I don't think it's a miracle,' Boisson said. 'It's just the result of hard work. Nothing else.' Under the closed roof of court Philippe-Chatrier, Andreeva repeatedly showed her frustration with the crowd as fans chanted 'Loïs, Loïs' between points, waved Tricolor flags, shouted during play, and even applauded the Russian teenager's errors. The first set was marked by momentum swings and brilliant shot-making from both players. Boisson twice found herself down a break but fought back each time, using heavy spin and deep groundstrokes to trouble her 18-year-old opponent. Boisson aiming for the title Andreeva grew visibly tense on key points, struggling to maintain her composure and wasting a chance to close out the first set when up 5-3. Despite saving three set points and forcing a tiebreaker, she ultimately handed the set to Boisson with two consecutive backhand errors. Andreeva responded strongly at the start of the second set, racing to a 3-0 lead. But Boisson broke back with a thunderous backhand winner down the line, drawing a roar of approval from the lively crowd. Andreeva received a warning after netting a routine forehand volley and angrily hitting a ball into the stands. She then argued with the umpire over a call that gave Boisson three break points. Andreeva saved the first one with a forehand winner then double-faulted, and never recovered. 'The first set was super intense, and I was really struggling at the start of the second, but I managed to regroup and finish like that,' said Boisson, who will make a big jump in the rankings. Having reached a career high of No. 152 last year before her knee injury, Boisson will climb at least to No. 68. And that could be even higher if she manages to pull off a third straight shocker — against Gauff in the semifinals. 'Every kid who plays tennis dreams to win a Slam,' Boisson said. 'More for French players, to win Roland-Garros. For sure I will go for the dream, because my dream is to win it, not to be in the semifinals.' An unseeded player has reached the French Open final twice in the last four years: eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova in 2021, and Karolina Muchova in 2023. Andreeva, a semifinalist in Paris last year, said she struggled to deal with the pressure of a hostile crowd, sometimes making the wrong tactical decisions. 'Today was one of those days when it's just a bit harder to deal with everything that's going on in the court,' she said.

RCMP statement regarding media reports on the structural investigation into the Israel-Hamas conflict

LONDON, ON, June 4, 2025 /CNW/ - In light of recent media coverage regarding the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's (RCMP) involvement in matters related to the Israel-Hamas armed conflict, we wish to clarify the nature and scope of our activities. In early 2024, the RCMP initiated a structural investigation in connection with this ongoing conflict. A structural investigation is a broad, intelligence-led intake process designed to collect, preserve, and assess information potentially relevant under Canada's Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act. This includes gathering open-source material and voluntary submissions from individuals wishing to provide information. The primary objective is to proactively collect relevant information that may support future investigative steps, should jurisdictional and legal thresholds be met. It is important to emphasize that a structural investigation is not a criminal investigation. The RCMP employs a well-established structured protocol to efficiently triage and process incoming information related to global conflicts, this standardized initial procedure serves as a foundation for every case, after which specialized investigative techniques are applied to address the unique aspects of each investigation, including the Israel-Hamas structural investigation. Should a perpetrator of core international crimes—such as genocide, war crimes, or crimes against humanity—with the appropriate nexus to Canada be identified, the RCMP will initiate a separate criminal investigation. To date, the RCMP has not initiated any related criminal investigations. Although this work has been underway in a developmental capacity since early 2024, it has not been publicly announced as the RCMP continues to develop essential supporting operational tools. This includes a secure online portal available in French, English, Hebrew and Arabic, to facilitate the structured and secure any submissions of information by the public and potential witnesses. Unfortunately, technical challenges have resulted in delays to the rollout of this critical tool; once this online portal is ready for access, we will advise the public. The RCMP remains committed to its mandate under Canadian law, to assess credible allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity. We conduct this work with impartiality, relying on evidence-based assessments in alignment with the principles of the rule of law. Given the sensitivity of the matter, we urge the public to refrain from drawing premature conclusions about the RCMP's role or intent. This initiative is solely focused on collecting relevant information and does not target any community or group. Further updates will be provided once the public reporting portal has been made available.
