Grand National 2025: Inothewayurthinkin out – full list of latest entries
Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin, who had been 3-1 favourite, won't line up at Aintree Racecourse after he was taken out of Randox Grand National as 69 remain following the latest scratchings' stage. But last year's winner I Am Maximus, who like Inothewayurthinkin is also owned by JP McManus, still remains on course.
Gavin Cromwell's Inothewayurthinkin had been the market leader with most bookmakers before his win in the Cheltenham Festival feature, where he beat hat-trick-seeking Galopin Des Champs by six lengths. He was then cut to 3-1 favourite but connections have now decided not to let the seven-year-old, who also won at last year's Grand National Festival, to try and become only the second horse after Golden Miller in 1934 to win both races in the same season. He could still line-up in another Gold Cup at the Punchestown Festival later next month.
Cromwell confirmed this morning that his charge will not line up in the world's greatest steeplechase on April 5. The County Meath handler told the Nick Luck Daily Podcast: "It wasn't a very difficult decision. He's only a seven-year-old, he's just won a Gold Cup, we've worked very hard on his jumping this season. I think it's the right thing to do. It's tempting being so well in in the handicap, but we'll do the right thing. There's no decision on that (running at Punchestown) either. We'll see what the next few weeks bring and we'll make that decision when we have to. He was a good winner of a Gold Cup, but it's a very hard race on horses and we have to bear in mind he's only a seven-year-old."

Cromwell still has last week's Cross Country Chase winner Stumptown; 2023 Grand National runner-up Vanillier, who was third to his stable-mate at Cheltenham; and Paddy Power Chase winner Perceval Legallois still entered in the Aintree showpiece. Stumptown is a best-priced 12-1 with William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral and bet365; Vanillier is a 16-1 chance with Ladbrokes and Coral; Perceval Legallois 14-1 with Ladbrokes, Coral, Paddy Power, Skybet, BetVictor and Betfair; and Velvet Elvis.
The new favourite is Intense Raffles, at a best-priced 7-1 with William Hill and bet365. The seven-year-old won the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse for County Meath handler Tom Gibney last season and he was second to fellow National entrant Nick Rockett in the Bobbyjo Chase back at Fairyhouse in February.
Willie Mullins' I Am Maximus, who provided the Irish handler with a second victory after Hedgehunter's success in 2005 in the Aintree showpiece when scoring under Paul Townend, will carry top weight of 11s12lb this time. He missed his intended prep race, the Bobbyjo Chase – a race he won before Aintree 12 months ago – at Fairyhouse last month due to a respiratory condition. But he is still on course to line-up again. I Am Maximus – who will bid to become the ninth official dual winner – is one of 10 entries still engaged for the reigning British and Irish champion trainer. The nine-year-old is currently a 10-1 chance with William Hill and bet365.
There were 11 horses were taken out of the race and won't be lining up for the 177th running of the Grand National on Saturday, April 5. They were: Inothewayurthinkin; Cromwell stable-mate Limerick Lace; Mouse Morris' Gentlemansgame, the Henry De Bromhead-trained duo Envoi Allen and Monty's Star; the Gordon Elliott-trained Galvin, Neville's The Real Whacker and Trelawne from the Kim Bailey and Matt Nicholls' stable; Pinkerton, Git Maker and Gericault Roque. While French Dynamite, Zanahiyr and Placenet have not met the race conditions to qualify and have also been removed from the National.
Irish trainer Elliott – who has won the Grand National three times with Silver Birch (2007) and the most recent dual scorer Tiger Roll (2018, 2019) – has taken out last year's fourth Galvin, who was pulled up in last week's Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Elliott still has 11 entries in the race this time including Three Card Brag, Conflated, Coko Beach, Fil Dor and Minella Crooner.
Mullins' other entries include recent Thyestes Chase and Bobbyjo Chase winner Nick Rockett; Irish Gold Cup runner-up Grangeclare West; last year's Scottish Grand National winner Macdermott; Meetingofthewaters and Minella Cocooner, who landed the Bet 365 Gold Cup at Sandown last April. Nick Rockett is a 16-1 chance with Paddy Power, Meetingofthewaters is 25-1 with William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral and bet365; Minella Cocooner is 40-1 with Skybet; while Grangeclare West 40-1 with official betting partners of the Grand National William Hill and Paddy Power.
There are currently 34 Irish entries but for British trainers Iroko – also owned by JP McManus – is vying for favouritism. Trained in Cheshire by Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero, the seven-year-old – who was second to Inothewayurthinkin at last year's Grand National Festival – is a best-priced 8-1 with William Hill and Coral.
Paul Nicholls, who won the Grand National in 2012 with Neptune Collonges, has saddled 79 runners in the Aintree showpiece over the years but has not had any for the past three runnings. This time though he has Kandoo Kid, who won the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury in December; 2022 King George VI Chase hero Bravemansgame; Denman Chase runner-up Hitman; Stay Away Fay and Threeunderthrufive among the entries. Kandoo Kid is the highest in the betting at 25-1 with William Hill and Ladbrokes.
Venetia Williams' dual Haydock Park Betfair Chase winner Royale Pagaille, who finished sixth in last week's Gold Cup, is also still engaged. The 11-year-old Rich Ricci-owned gelding is a 150-1 chance with Paddy Power and Betfair for the National.
Neville's The Real Whacker, who was fifth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last week, could now run in the Aintree Bowl Chase on the opening day of the Grand National meeting after being taken out of the big one. On his run in the Gold Cup Neville said: "We were happy and we were disappointed because he never ran his true race because he never saw the first fence. He never got into his rhythm jumping after that, he was just careful and wasn't letting fly. Looking back at it, Brian (Hughes) did well to stay on him as the horse in front of him (Banbridge) just crossed him at the last second and he said he never saw the fence. He was lucky he didn't come down. He's back in one piece and out in the field with the sun on his back. He's in good form, so we'll freshen him up and go to Aintree with him."
He added: "I scratched him from the National and put him in the Bowl, so that's where he'll go. We'll test whether he likes the track and we can aim him at the National next year. Brian minded him the other day when his chance was gone in fairness to him. He was thinking of Aintree when his chance had gone and he picked up a few quid for finishing fifth. It was a great experience and everyone that was involved enjoyed it. It was great that he got around and we'll rock on to the next day, that's all you can do."
There will again be a maximum of 34 runners going to post on the first Saturday of April and Cromwell's Vanillier is currently the 34th runner on the list of entries. Last year due to two late non-runners only 32 lined up in the National as the reserves system was not in place. But this year that reserves system will return. As previously there will be four reserves named – 35-38 on the final list – and should there be any non-runners up to 1pm the day (Friday, April 4) before the Grand National the reserves will replace them in racecard order.
Betting Guide: 7-1 Intense Raffles, 8-1 Iroko, 10-1 I Am Maximus 12- Stumptown, 14-1 Nick Rockett, Perceval Legallois, 16-1 Vanillier, 25-1 Meetingofthewaters, 25-1 Kandoo Kid, Hewick, 33-1 Hyland, Three Card Brag, 40-1 Beauport, Monbeg Genius, Minella Cocooner, 40-1 Grangeclare West, 50-1 Bravemansgame, Broadway Boy, L'Homme Presse, Mr Vango. 66-1 bar.

William Hill spokesperson, Lee Phelps, said: 'With Cheltenham in the rear-view mirror, we're now full steam ahead to the Randox Grand National Festival. And on seeing favourite Inothewayurthinkin has been taken out of the Grand National, we think as Official Betting Partner of the festival, it's time to give punters the protection of Non-Runner Money Back on the race Even aside from Inothewayurthinkin, there's still a great deal of uncertainty around which contenders will turn up at Aintree on 5th April. But by going Non-Runner Money Back, we hope to give punters the confidence to back their fancy and be safe in the knowledge that should they not run, they'll get their money back.
'Intense Raffles has assumed favouritism at 7-1 as Thomas Gibney's contender bids to follow in I Am Maximus' footsteps and land the Irish Grand National-Grand National double in consecutive years. Iroko follows him at 8-1 and has been a popular pick with our punters, with defending champion I Am Maximus a 10-1 shot to retain his crown. As part of our commitment to great prices, it's been fantastic to hear Oddschecker's verification that William Hill offered more top prices on all four days of Cheltenham than any other major bookmaker*. We'll be committed to the same at Aintree."

What's going on with USMNT? Plus: Players to watch at Club World Cup
The Athletic FC ⚽ is The Athletic's daily football (or soccer, if you prefer) newsletter. Sign up to receive it directly to your inbox. Hello! Mauricio Pochettino was sold the American dream. His USMNT are having a nightmare. We're trying to get our heads around it. 🥵 Poch feels the heat 🏀 NBA, NFL bids for EPL club 📡 The Club World Cup Radar 👀 Totti's long-range belter 'I'm the guilty one here,' said Mauricio Pochettino, which made a change from apportioning blame to the players around him. Nothing has epitomised the awkward coupling between the USMNT and their new head coach quite like him digging out his squad at regular intervals. But Pochettino's mea culpa after Tuesday's 4-0 mauling by Switzerland was a variation on a recurring theme: that his collaboration with the U.S. has started badly, or taken longer than it should have done to take off. Don't forget, this was supposed to be U.S. Soccer getting serious and making the national team all they could be at the 2026 World Cup. It paid big to pluck Poch from the uppermost club coaching bracket. Advertisement So what's going on? Some mitigation before anything else. Pochettino's pool of players for the past week of friendlies has been weaker than normal. Certain mainstays such as Christian Pulisic and Sergino Dest are resting, and fringe names were rotated in on Tuesday. The fitness of his squad has been so temperamental he must think a clean bill of health is something that only happens for other coaches. His record over 10 games, though, is concerning: five wins and five defeats, with four of those losses in his past four matches. He fumbled the fixtures which really mattered, at the Concacaf Nations League, and he'll be bailing water if the confederation's Gold Cup — starting this Sunday — goes wrong, too. It took a mere six months for USMNT godfather Bruce Arena to imply that the Argentine was a poor choice. The Athletic's Paul Tenorio made me chuckle when he wrote in yesterday's TAFC: 'The honeymoon is over and a marriage counsellor is on retainer.' The trouble is that when you watch Poch's side, it's not easy to spot a fluent style forming, or dependable patterns of play. To wit: they Americans are no more potent than they were on the day Gregg Berhalter was fired last July. Just to branch off on a tangent for a second: across international football as a whole, we might be seeing evidence that switching from club jobs to a national team's technical area is trickier than it sounds. The crossover is in vogue, but how wise a ploy is it? England are furrowing Thomas Tuchel's brow. Germany have been ordinary under Julian Nagelsmann. Carlo Ancelotti isn't a sure-fire cure for Brazil's mediocrity. In reality, international coaching offers little scope to implement a detailed, tactical plan over a finite period. Training sessions are too few. Perhaps that's why associations went through a phase of banking on pragmatic types already working for them in another position, often coaching an age-group team; England did it with Gareth Southgate, Spain with Luis de la Fuente and Argentina with Lionel Scaloni. Advertisement There's an added complication for Pochettino, and one which is largely out of his control. The USMNT is not awash with world-class talent. Pulisic is as close as it gets but it surely says something that the cream of the crop in European club football aren't spending to sign him. It's concerning — if not surprising — that fatigue will see him sit out the Gold Cup entirely. The U.S. roster has its limits. That much is obvious. As Paul writes, the requisite depth is not there. But they should be, and have to be, better than this. 'If you want to criticise me, go ahead,' Pochettino said on Tuesday, and that grumbling could mount internally as well as externally at this rate. Because the World Cup is huge, it's predominantly on home soil next time, it's arriving soon and it will be many, many years before it comes around again. Somewhere in the not-so-distant future, FIFA will announce ticket prices for next year's World Cup finals. A handful are up for grabs already — corporate bargains at $73,500 a head, for example — but general-sale costs are still being finalised. The World Cup is a far bigger event than FIFA's Club World Cup (CWC), the revamped version of which starts in the U.S. on Saturday. But in Adam Crafton's overview of all of the things which need sorting for summer 2026, ticket sales are as intriguing as anything — because the CWC is failing to capture the imagination. The world governing body is offering students five tickets for $20 for the first game in Miami this weekend (down from $349 shortly after the group-stage draw in December). Realistically, it wouldn't be doing that if a) punters were queuing up to be there and b) it wasn't concerned about television cameras showing stacks of empty seats. Broadcast rights to this event set DAZN back $1bn after all. Advertisement On TV, the equivalent of two thirds of the globe's population will watch the 2026 World Cup. That audience is assured. But on the ground? It will sell better, sure, but were common sense to prevail, the take-up for the CWC should have some influence on FIFA's plans for next year. Don't hold your breath. One of the highlights of The Athletic's coverage of any tournament is always The Radar. Published before the games begin, it's our tactical, who's-who bible. You'll find Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe et all in today's Club World Cup breakdown but the real treats are the lesser-known profiles, like that of Auckland City's Dylan Manickum. He's a 32-year-old whose working life combines semi-pro football and, incredibly, full-time employment as an engineer. Beyond him, look out for River Plate's 17-year-old Franco Mastantuono. The precocious midfielder broke Lionel Messi's record as the youngest debutant in a competitive match for Argentina, and he's most likely off to Real Madrid soon. Also, a shout out to Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Last year, he was the first Africa-based 'keeper to be shortlisted for the Yashin Trophy, awarded annually to the world's best. Williams has the knack of reading penalties (below) and if Sundowns make any sort of splash, they'll likely be indebted to their main man. It's been one of those weeks for Italy's national team; one of those weeks they have from time to time. Who can rescue them from the hole they have dug for themselves? What about Francesco Totti, the drop-dead-gorgeous 2006 World Cup winner? He's 48 years old now but the force remains strong, as shown by him casually finishing from halfway in an old-boys' game over the weekend. In October, he talked (semi-seriously) about coming out of retirement. Let's get it on.

USMNT not worried about ‘outside noise' following former player criticism
USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams has said that the squad are not worried about 'outside' criticism from former players after the team's recent poor form. Mauricio Pochettino's side were soundly defeated 4-0 by Switzerland in a friendly at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tennessee on Tuesday. The loss was the team's fourth in a row after defeats in the Concacaf Nations League semi-finals against Panama and the subsequent third-place match against Canada, and in a friendly against Turkey on Saturday. The U.S. have now lost five of their 10 games under Pochettino, who was appointed in September 2024. Pochettino's side were without star player Christian Pulisic, as well as his Milan team-mate Yunus Musah, for the games against Turkey and Switzerland, with both players set to miss the summer's Gold Cup. The U.S. take on Trinidad and Tobago in their first fixture of the tournament on Sunday and will also face Saudi Arabia and Haiti in the group stage. Advertisement Former U.S. forwards Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan were among those to criticise the players, with Adams saying that the squad are tuning out the comments. 'We don't talk about that internally as a group,' Adams told the Associated Press. 'The noise on the outside is the noise on the outside. I think we need to focus on what we need to do as a group and continue to build.' Dempsey said last week that he did not 'understand' the move to miss the Gold Cup and pointed to his own experience appearing at tournaments for the U.S.. 'Whether it was Gold Cup, whether it was Copa (America), whether it was Confederations Cup, whether it was the World Cup, I wasn't going to miss competitions,' Dempsey said on the Men in Blazers podcast. 'For me, I don't understand it because that wasn't my mentality. I always wanted to play in those games.' Donovan, who is second on the U.S. all-time appearance charts and shares the goalscoring record with Dempsey at 57 each, brought up the situation while working as an analyst for FOX's coverage of the UEFA Nations League final, which saw Portugal defeat Spain on penalties. 'This is what it means to represent your country,' Donovan said after Portugal's victory. 'And if you don't want to take this, as a professional soccer player and someone who gets the opportunity to wear that jersey and take it seriously and responsibly, then don't come in. 'I can't help but think about some of our guys on vacation right now not wanting to play in the Gold Cup.' Donovan also criticised the team in March, writing on X: 'I'm so sick of hearing how 'talented' this group of players is and all of the amazing clubs they play for. If you aren't going to show up and actually give a s*** about playing for your national team, decline the invite. Talent is great, pride is better.' Dempsey added that he was 'worried about the future of this U.S. men's national team.' Juventus' Weston McKennie and Tim Weah as well as Borussia Dortmund's Gio Reyna are also set to miss the Gold Cup due to their team's participation at the Club World Cup, which begins on Saturday. Adams missed the Switzerland match with an injury that he attributed to 'overload'. Advertisement 'A little turf toe-type injury,' said the 26-year-old. 'More of an overuse thing probably than anything — overload. It was something that I picked up when I came into camp. Progressing well right now, but just trying to be smart and manage it.' Adams, who plays for Bournemouth in the Premier League, made 32 appearances in all competitions last season as his side finished ninth in the table. ()

Countdown to 2026 World Cup has begun, and pressure is on U.S. team to improve
Soccer is making big headlines in the United States this week with the kickoff of the Club World Cup at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday and celebrations in 11 cities across the country on Wednesday commemorating one year to go to the 2026 World Cup. All 16 World Cup host cities (11 in the United States, three in Mexico and two in Canada) unveiled countdown clocks as part of the festivities. The Miami clock was revealed at the Perez Art Museum (PAMM) in downtown in a ceremony that included city and county officials, the Miami World Cup host committee, and singer Marc Anthony. The clocks will count down to the stroke of midnight on June 11, 2026, when the tournament opens in Mexico City. The first 13 of 48 teams have already qualified, including co-hosts Canada, Mexico and the USA, who get automatic entry. The way things are going for Team USA of late, coach Mauricio Pochettino and the U.S. Soccer Federation are surely grateful for the automatic bid. The U.S. team lost 4-0 to Switzerland in a friendly in Nashville on Tuesday night, with all four goals conceded in the first half. It was the fourth loss in a row for Team USA. Among the headlines following the game: USMNT humiliated by Switzerland 4-0. USMNT thrashed 4-0 by Switzerland in final Gold Cup tune up. First half debacle dooms hapless USMNT in 4-0 friendly loss to Switzerland. Former U.S. national team stars Alexi Lalas and Landon Donovan, now Fox Sports commentators and podcasters, have not minced words in their analysis of Team USA, questioning the heart, work ethic and commitment of some players. Pochettino, an Argentine who was hired last Fall from Tottenham Hotspurs to lead the American squad, has tried to instill more passion and pride in the national badge. 'We're going through a period right now where this team is being looked at in a critical sense, and I think fairly so,' Lalas said on a conference call marking the year to go to the World Cup. 'I think more concerning is a possible apathy that has crept in towards this team. And I never thought if you would ask me, back in 1994, what the summer of 2025 a year away from the World Cup in 2026 would look like that this would be what I would come up with.' Both Donovan and Lalas stressed that there is pressure on the U.S. team to rise to the occasion. 'I also don't want to let this generation off the hook,' Lalas said. 'This is a generation that, over those last 30 plus years, everybody has worked to make sure that they have everything that they possibly need in terms of the opportunities and the resources that they have. 'And with that comes higher expectations, and I do think fair expectations, and so whoever ultimately is on that field come next summer, when that whistle blows, I hope that they recognize the opportunity, and I hope that they recognize the responsibility to further the game.' Donovan said the team's highest profile Europe-based players who have been considered locks to make the World Cup squad might be replaced by hungrier, lesser-known players if they are not careful. 'When you put the U.S. jersey on, or you get invited to a camp, it is a massive responsibility,' Donovan said, adding that he was moved by seeing 30,000 U.S. military members singing the Star Spangled Banner at a 2006 game in Germany. 'That's the level of dedication I think fans want to see.' The last time the United States hosted a men's World Cup was 1994. Lalas said the world will see next year how much soccer progress has been made in this country. 'I think the world is going to be pleasantly surprised by how far we have come in it's still a relatively short period of time, but we still have a ways to go,' Lalas said. 'A World Cup is, for lack of a better word, this circus that comes to town with a huge tent. That tent has gotten bigger, and we want to make sure that we are as welcoming and accommodating as possible, because we recognize that a lot of people are going to come in and maybe again, as far as we've come, they're going to be some people that taste test, and we hope that they get a little taste of it, and they want more, because the circus will leave town. The legacy that it leaves, that's what's important.' Other teams who have punched their tickets to the World Cup are defending champion Argentina, first-time qualifiers Jordan and Uzbekistan, as well as Australia, Brazil, Ecuador, IR Iran, Japan, Korea Republic and New Zealand. The remaining 35 teams will be confirmed by March 2026, when all the regional qualifying tournaments have concluded. World Cup tickets will go on sale to the public in the coming months. Select ticket-inclusive hospitality packages are already available. Additional hospitality packages, including for matches in Canada and Mexico, are set to go on sale in July.
