1 Energy Stock With a Dividend Yield Over 7% Right Now

MPLX has a much higher dividend yield than the average energy stock. The master limited partnership's payout is on a sustainable foundation. It has been growing its earnings and distribution at healthy rates, and should continue to do so. 10 stocks we like better than MPLX › The energy sector can be a great place for income investors to find higher-yielding options. The average energy stock in the S&P 500 has a yield of around 3% at its current share price, which is more than double the 1.3% yield of the broad market index. Many energy stocks have even higher yields. One of them is MPLX (NYSE: MPLX). The midstream energy company yields more than 7% right now. Here's why income investors will want to take a closer look at MPLX. A yield above 7% might seem like a higher-risk income stream at first glance. However, that's not the case with MPLX's payout. The master limited partnership (MLP) has a rock-solid financial foundation supporting its big-time distribution. MPLX has a diversified midstream operation that generates lots of stable cash flow backed by long-term contracts and government-regulated rate structures. It produced nearly $1.5 billion in distributable cash flow during the first quarter -- enough to cover its distribution by a comfortable 1.5 times. The MLP produced about $500 million in excess free cash flow during the period. That was enough money to cover its organic capital spending with room to spare. (Its net cash used in investing activities was about $364 million after adjusting for acquisitions.) MPLX also has a robust balance sheet. It ended the first quarter with a leverage ratio of 3.3. That's comfortably below the 4.0 or so ratio its stable cash flows can support. MPLX stands out among higher-yielding dividend stocks because it's growing at a healthy clip. Its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) rose by 7% in the first quarter. Meanwhile, its distributable cash flow was up 8.5%. The company has been growing its earnings and cash flow at a nearly 7% compound annual rate since 2021. That strong growth, along with the company's top-notch financial profile, has allowed MPLX to increase its distribution at a 10.7% compound annual rate since 2021, including by 12.5% last year. The MLP has plenty more growth coming down the pipeline. It has secured several new investments this year. MPLX and its partners recently made a final investment decision to build the Traverse Pipeline, which should enter commercial service in 2027. It's also building two Gulf Coast fractionators and a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) export terminal, expanding its BANGL pipeline, building the Blackcomb and Rio Bravo pipelines, and constructing two more natural gas processing plants. These projects have in-service dates through 2029, giving the MLP lots of visibility into its earnings growth. "We continue to anticipate mid-teen returns on these projects, which will support mid-single digit adjusted EBITDA growth," said CEO Maryann Mannen in the first-quarter earnings press release. "This growth is expected to allow us to reinvest in the business and support annual distribution increases in the future." MPLX also continues to use its strong balance sheet to make acquisitions. Early this year, it agreed to buy the 55% of the BANGL pipeline it didn't already own for $715 million, another 5% interest in the Matterhorn Express pipeline for $151 million, and a crude oil gathering system for $237 million. Given its low leverage ratio, it has ample financial flexibility to continue making bolt-on acquisitions as opportunities arise. These and future deals will further enhance its earnings growth rate, giving it more fuel to increase its distribution. MPLX is currently paying over 7%, which is much higher than the average energy stock and the S&P 500. The MLP's big-time payout is on a very sustainable foundation. Further, it should continue growing for the next several years. That makes it a great option for income-seeking investors as long as they are comfortable receiving the Schedule K-1 federal tax form the MLP sends them each year. Israel-Iran attacks and the 2 other things that drove the stock market this week

What was shaping up to be a relatively calm week quickly got volatile on Friday, following Israel's overnight strike on Iran. Here is a closer look at the three biggest themes that defined the market this week. 1. Geopolitics: The attack on Iranian nuclear infrastructure rippled through financial markets on Friday. U.S. stocks sold off on the increased tensions overseas. The S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite tumbled 1.13% and 1.3% on Friday, respectively. Meanwhile, Brent crude futures and West Texas Intermediate crude futures added around 7% and 7.5%, respectively. Gold rose to a two-month high, as well, as investors see it as a safe haven from all the volatility. Prior to the attack, stock benchmark were on track to close the week in the positive. Instead, the S & P 500 and Nasdaq lost 0.4% and 0.6% over that stretch, snapping back-to-back weekly wining streaks. Despite a modest gain Friday, part of the safe-haven trade, the U.S. dollar index had a tough week. On Thursday, we wrote about how long-term fundamental investors should view the weaker dollar. Another big geopolitical event for investors was an announcement by U.S. and Chinese delegations that the two sides agreed on a trade-deal framework, particularly focused on rare-earth minerals. 2. Economic data: Investors received good news on the inflation front on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, the c onsumer price index, a measure of goods and services inflation across the U.S. economy, showed that core prices rose less that expected last month. The May producer price index , a gauge of wholesale inflation in the country, came in lower than expected Thursday, too. The labor market continued to show it was softening but not breaking. Weekly jobless claims for the week ending June 7 were unchanged, while continuing claims were still at multiyear highs. On the whole, the batch of economic data was encouraging as the rate of inflation subsides and unemployment remains low, providing the consumer with more buying power. 3. AI updates: It was also a week chock full of company specific news and events within the generative artificial intelligence race. AI remains one of the most important, if not the most important, drivers for financial markets. On Monday, we heard from Apple, when the company hosted its annual worldwide developer conference. Though expectations were about as muted as we've ever seen, the event still managed to disappoint due to the lack of AI updates. Meta Platforms, on the other hand, got investors excited this week when news broke that the company took a large investment in Scale AI and will bring the startup's CEO on board to help start a new "superintelligence" unit within the company with the goal of achieving artificial general intelligence. Early Wednesday morning, we heard from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who spoke at the company's GTC event in Paris. While there weren't many new updates, Huang reaffirmed that there is still a lot more accelerated compute capacity that needs to be built out, highlighting demand from hyperscale customers and sovereign entities alike. Europe, he argued, is likely to 10 times its compute capacity over the next two years. Outside the portfolio, Oracle and Advanced Micro Devices made news on AI, too. Oracle stock jumped Thursday after reporting better-than-expected quarterly results the prior evening. Impressively, the stock soared again Friday, despite the broader market sell-off, en route to its best week since 2021 . BMO Capital also upgraded Oracle to a buy rating. Oracle CEO Safra Catz's comments on its cloud infrastructure business confirmed that there's growing demand for AI computing power. Indeed, Oracle said revenues from that business should surge 70% year over year in its fiscal 2026. Elsewhere, Advanced Micro Devices unveiled its new AI server chip for 2026 at a company event Thursday, part of its attempt to rival Nvidia's market-leading offering. AMD also announced that it's landed a new high-profile customer OpenAI, the startup behind ChatGPT and Club holding Microsoft's AI partner. The chip isn't expected to launch until 2026, though. Ethereum Treasury Firm SharpLink Gaming Plunges 70% – But There May Be a Twist

SharpLink Gaming (SBET), a Nasdaq-listed company that is pursuing an ether ETH treasury strategy, tumbled 70% on Thursday in after-hours trading following a fresh filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The company submitted an S-3ASR registration statement, enabling the resale of up to 58,699,760 shares related to its private investment in public equity (PIPE) financing. The Thursday filing allows more than 100 shareholders in the PIPE round to sell their shares, effectively flooding the market and triggering a post-close sell-off, Charles Allen, CEO of BTCS, a publicly-traded firm that's pursuing crypto reserve strategy, explained in an X post and an interview with CoinDesk. The company raised $450 million earlier this month through a PIPE round from a wide range of investors, including ConsenSys, Galaxy, and Pantera Capital, to acquire ETH for its treasury. Ethereum co-founder and ConsenSys CEO Joseph Lubin also joined the firm as board chairman. However, there may be a larger strategy behind the latest move. Allen said in an X post that he thinks the company may have quietly raised up to $1 billion to buy more ETH using an at-the-market (ATM) offering that was previously announced in a May 30 SEC filing. "If they played cards right, they would expect a surprise PR tomorrow with $1B of ETH purchases, which could light the match to reignite the stock," he said. ETH is down 4.1% over the past 24 hours at around $2,650 as bitcoin and the broader crypto markets in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data
