You're Embarrassing Yourself by Desiree Akhavan audiobook review – a devastatingly honest and funny memoir
A funny, candid and often heartbreaking essay collection, You're Embarrassing Yourself documents mortifying episodes in the life of Iranian-American film-maker and actor Desiree Akhavan's life, dating back to childhood when she was voted the ugliest girl in her school. Her book is partly a letter to her younger self, whom she reassures that her face and body 'will settle into something you'll be able to live with by the time you're 30', and a paean to readers who 'clutch the moniker 'loser' close to [their] heart. At first, it'll feel like a handicap, but eventually it'll transform into a superpower, because being on the outside offers up the best vantage point from which to observe and skewer.'
Akhavan narrates, her compelling delivery veering between archly amused, as she recalls her more ludicrous moments, and mournful, as she relives the damage she inflicted on herself in her formative years. At college, she had anorexia and bulimia; at this time her parents also persuaded her to have surgery to reduce the size of her nose. Eventually Akhavan joined a recovery programme for her eating disorders where she looked at the other patients and thought 'what a tragic bunch of basic bitches … It took me weeks to realise they were all me. I was staring at 13 Desirees.' While this is no tale of redemption, age brings a degree of acceptance of herself and her flaws. 'I'll always be embarrassing but I'm beginning to lose my embarrassment. The sharp sting of humiliation grows dull when you realise you're going to keep making a fool of yourself, because that's what it is to be alive.'

Brit influencer and husband feared dead in plane crash after heartbreaking post
Wellness guru Jamie Meek and husband Fiongal Greenlaw posted a video from Ahmedabad airport just moments before boarding the ill-fated plane, which went down shortly after takeoff A British influencer and his husband are among those feared dead after an Air India plane bound for London smashed into a college with hundreds on board. Wellness guru Jamie Meek and husband Fiongal Greenlaw posted a video from Ahmedabad airport just moments before boarding the ill-fated plane, which went down shortly after take-off. Meek, 45, and Greenlaw, 39, based in London, co-founded the Wellness Foundry, a company promoting holistic living. The couple had been on a holiday in India and had previously made appearances on ITV 's This Morning to showcase their wellness brand. The final video shared from the airport showed the couple in vibrant floral shirts, smiling and relaxed as they prepared to fly home. In the clip, Fiongal says, 'We are at the airport just boarding. Goodbye India. Ten-hour flight back to England. What was your biggest takeaway Jamie?' to which Jamie replies, 'I don't know,' prompting laughter from Fiongal who responds 'thanks for your contribution.' Fiongal then jokingly says his takeaway was 'don't lose your patience with your partner,' to which Jamie replied 'you snapped at me at the airport for having chai.' Surrounded by fellow travelers, Fiongal ends the clip by saying he's returning to the UK 'happily, happily calm.' Earlier videos captured highlights of their time in Ahmedabad, including scenes from a luxury hotel following a long car journey. In one clip, Fiongal, stretched out on a large bed, showcases a swing in their room, calling the space 'beautiful' and adding he is 'feeling very, very happy.' The couple are believed to have spent two weeks in India, documenting their travels through numerous social media updates. Their shared content included moments such as getting henna tattoos, shopping for textiles, and navigating bustling streets in a tuk-tuk. Just one day before the crash, Fiongal posted a message marking the end of their trip: 'So, it's our last night in India and we've had a magical experience. Some mind-blowing things have happened. We are going to put all this together and create a vlog. It's my first ever vlog about the whole trip and we want to share it.' At least 204 bodies have been recovered from the crash site near Ahmedabad Airport, according to the local police chief.

Love Island first look as pair face the wrath of their actions and an explosive re-coupling
Get ready for tonight's explosive episode of Love Island, packed with steamy kisses, shocking confessions and a game changing recoupling. Here's your exclusive first look... Following a drama-packed episode of Love Island last night which saw Islander Ben lose his temper with American bombshell Toni, admitting she'd given him the 'ick' and a saucy game of dares featuring kisses, lap dances and jaw-dropping confessions, it's clear the drama inside the Mallorcan villa is only just heating up. Kisses were flying in every direction, with signs of major couple shake-ups on the horizon. But the real shock came at the end, as Shakira and Blu secretly slipped into the hideaway for a surprise snog - leaving viewers on the edge of their seats, eager to see the fallout. But as we wait for the drama to unfold, here is your sneak peek into tonight's episode of the hit ITV show. There is no hiding in the Hideaway on this season of Love Island, as the episode begins with Blu and Shakira leaving the private suite and the other Islanders have plenty of questions for them, wasting no time in grilling them. Blu heads straight for a group of Islanders and fills them in on the fact they shared a sneaky kiss. When Dejon asks Blu: "What did you do in there? A chat?", Blu bluntly replies: "No, we had a kiss, I went in for her." Megan's responded in shock "I love the messiness!" Elsewhere, Harry and Helena are getting cosy by the mini fire-pit. Harry asks: "Are we still on for the Hideaway?" But before they can sneak away, Dejon interrupts to spill the tea, saying: "You know he (Blue) kissed her (Shakira)?" Stunned, Harry says: "No he didn't…I don't believe what I'm hearing." Meanwhile Shakira fills in Toni: "Blu pulled me for a chat and he went, 'I didn't kiss you in the challenge 'cause I wanted to do it now' and he just leaned in…it was a good kiss but it says a statement, I feel like Ben won't be happy and Harry especially." Confronting the conversation, Harry tells Shakira: "All that matters is I want to pursue things with you." But Blu doesn't back down, later telling Harry: "We had two kisses, where's your head at? It seems to me your with Helena more and flirting?" Harry drops a shocking confession, telling Blu: "I think it's more flirty, but I think Shakira's got more substance." Later that night, Harry and Helena finally attempt to sneak off to the Hideaway, hoping no one will see them - but their plan doesn't go unnoticed... The next morning, the Islander's have questions after Harry and Helena's not so secret trip to the Hideaway. Helena pulls Shakira aside: "I wanted to speak to you 'cause I don't want you to think it was done in a malicious way." But how will Shakira react to Helena's confession? Shakira doesn't seem to be buying it, telling Harry when he pulls her for a chat: "Don't act like you went to the Hideaway cause I kissed someone, you wanted to go…" Things take another twist when Shakira has a chat with Ben that might just reignite an old flame. The day's drama reaches an all time high when Meg receives a text announcing: "Islanders, tonight there will be a recoupling in which the girls will choose which boy they want to couple up with #SpoiltForChoice #VillaVibesAreShifting." Toni sums it up best: "Tables have turned," and the boys are left to wonder if they've done enough. As the Islanders gather at the fire pit and the girls prepare their speeches, everyone is wondering - will they stick or twist? But that's not all for this re-coupling, just as the Islanders thing its over, another surprise text arrives that none of the Islanders had seen coming…
