UH's Ah Yat proud to be back home with Dad in the stands

After winning 14 of 22 non-conference games, the University of Hawai'i softball team turns the page this week, opening Big West play against longtime rival Long Beach State at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Rainbow Wahine (14-8) enter conference action with the most wins in the Big West and a strong 12-4 home record. They will host The Beach in a three-game series Friday and Saturday, looking to continue their momentum in front of their home crowd.
One of the key contributors to Hawai'i's success has been sophomore infielder Milan Ah Yat, who was named the Big West Field Player of the Week after a standout performance in the Outrigger Invitational.
The Loyola Marymount transfer leads UH with a 1.135 OPS and 15 RBIs, delivering key moments for the 'Bows—including a walk-off home run three weeks ago.
For Ah Yat, a former Pac-Five standout, playing in front of family and friends has made her return to Hawai'i even more meaningful—especially for her father, former UH baseball star pitcher Paul Ah Yat.
'I think it makes it so much more special,' Ah Yat said. 'Playing on the mainland is a different feeling, but coming home makes me even more proud to be out there, playing for my family and my friends. It feels like high school all over again—especially playing on this field and for my dad, knowing he played at UH. It's just an amazing feeling, and I'm so grateful to be here.'
For Paul Ah Yat, watching his daughter thrive in a Rainbow Wahine uniform has been a surreal experience.
'It's been a blessing for all of us,' he said. 'Having Milan here and seeing her play—I don't think I truly appreciated how special it is to be a Rainbow. It's been surreal.'
While Paul has provided guidance throughout Milan's career, their dynamic has evolved since her return home.
'In the beginning, it was mainly a coach-and-player relationship,' Milan said. 'Now, he's stepped into more of a fatherly role. He still gives me tips and coaches me throughout the season, but he's taken a step back and has been there for me off the field. I really love him for that.'
Paul acknowledged that their family's support system—including his wife and younger daughter, Amari—has played a big part in Milan's transition back home.
'Even though she mentions me, I feel like my wife, Catherine, and Mari, our youngest have really helped Milan with the life portion of being home,' he said. 'It's brought our family closer together, and I think we're in a pretty special place right now.'
Ah Yat has already launched four home runs this season, and the Rainbow Wahine will look to carry their offensive momentum into Big West play.
Hawai'i's three-game series against Long Beach State kicks off Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader at 2 p.m. Only Friday's game will be televised.

Milan wins Dauphine stage two to take over yellow jersey

Jonathan Milan has won four Grand Tour stages - all at the Giro d'Italia in the past two years [Getty Images] Jonathan Milan won stage two of the Criterium du Dauphine with a sprint finish in Issoire. Lidl-Trek's lead-out train hit the front during the final kilometre of the 204.6km ride from Premilhat, and they left Milan alone with 150m remaining. Advertisement This year's Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix winner Mathieu van der Poel then fought hard to catch Milan. But the Italian held on to clinch his first road race win in France, with British rider Fred Wright edging out Van der Poel for second. Milan also claimed the yellow jersey from reigning Tour de France and Giro d'Italia champion Tadej Pogacar, who won the opening stage on Sunday. "It was really tough," said Milan, 24. "Yesterday and today, I suffered a lot. "At one point I was really on the limit, but I have to say thanks to my team-mates because they brought me back. Advertisement "We knew we had to take the last corner at the front, and it was just a perfect lead-out. I'm really happy because this means a lot to all of us." Local rider Romain Bardet, who is competing in his last professional race, attacked on the final categorised climb of the day and built a 20-second lead. But Bardet did not get any support in the breakaway so the peloton soon closed the gap, with Lidl Trek putting Milan in a prime position during the finish. Stage three will begin in the 34-year-old Bardet's hometown of Brioude. Milan grabs Dauphine stage victory and overall lead

Hulking Italian sprinter Jonathan Milan surged away from the pack to win the second stage of the Criterium de Dauphine in Issoire on Monday to take the overall lead from Tadej Pogacar. The 1.93m (6-foot-4) 87kg Milan had to battle to keep up on a hilly 204.6km run through central France from Premilhat. When the pack hit the home straight, he rocketed away from his rivals to collect a 10-second victory bonus and the yellow jersey. Advertisement "That was really tough," said Milan. "I was dropped at one point and I was really on the limit, but I have to say thanks to my teammates because they brought me back and guided me until the last metres." Briton Fred Wright was second and Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel third. Pogacar and his main rivals for overall victory, both in the Criterium and the Tour de France, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel, rolled home safely in the main pack just behind Mlan. Pogacar, who collected a 10-second bonus on Sunday, has the same overall time as Mian, but braked hard in the final metres to surrender places and hand the Italian the tie-break edge and the daily media responsibilities that go with the yellow jersey. Advertisement The eight-day race, with four hilly stages, a time trial and three final days in the Alps, has attracted an A-list roster of 154 riders from 22 teams. It offers Tour de France contenders a chance to hone their form and gain a psychological edge before the main event starts on July 5. Pogacar, who won his third Tour de France last year ending Vingegaard's two-year reign, had struck the first blow the previous day, edging the Dane to take the opening stage and the overall lead. On Monday, support riders for Pogacar's Team UAE and Vingegaard's Visma spent much of the stage jostling, sometimes angrily, for position at the front of the pack. Advertisement The stage was briefly animated when local-boy Romain Bardet, riding the final race of his 14-year professional career, launched an attack on the last small climb just before a corner where his fan club was waiting with a huge banner. The 34-year-old was caught with 10 kilometres to go as Milan's Lidl-Trek team took control. The Frenchman will have another chance on Tuesday when stage three starts from his home town Brioude for a hilly 207.2km run to Charantonnay. jk-pb/nr

Milan risk missing out on Bennacer, Theo Hernandez and Chukwueze cash

Milan are facing problems, as Olympique Marseille won't pay the Ismael Bennacer option, while Atletico Madrid offers for Theo Hernandez and Betis for Samuel Chukwueze are too low. The Rossoneri have failed to qualify for any European competition this season after finishing eighth in the Serie A table, which means they will have to tighten their belts a little. Advertisement Though Tijjani Reijnders is on his way to Manchester City, they were still hoping to bring in some fresh revenue with other player sales. Because the midfielder made only 12 appearances in his six-month loan, argue Marseille are hoping to negotiate another loan experience instead. On top of that, Sky Sport Italia transfer pundit Gianluca Di Marzio warns that the opening Atletico Madrid offer for Theo Hernandez is only €15m, considerably lower than they were hoping for. It is unlikely to match the €21.1m plus up to €7m in add-ons that the Rossoneri paid to sign him from Villarreal in 2023.
