Soccer-Relief for Belgium but questions for the defence after dramatic win over Wales

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -There was relief for Belgium after scraping through a dramatic World Cup qualifier against Wales on Monday but plenty for coach Rudi Garcia to ponder after a narrow 4-3 home win.
Belgium had been cruising at 3-0 up inside the first half-hour of the Group J match at the King Baudouin Stadium but Wales fought back to 3-3 with 20 minutes left before Kevin De Bruyne grabbed the winner two minutes from time.
'The most important thing is that we won. Psychologically it is tough to give away a three-goal lead, but we showed our mental strength,' said Garcia after Belgium's second game in their qualifying group for the 2026 finals in North America.
'We kept fighting. It is symbolic that Kevin of all people scored the winning goal."
De Bruyne had been a key factor throughout, ghosting in at the back post to convert Youri Tielemans' cross for the winner.
Tielemans, who was captain for the night, said relief was the primary emotion after the game.
"We are happy with the victory, but we know that should not have happened to us," he said of the Welsh comeback.
"I have no explanation for how that happened. But the craziest things can happen with the national team.
"We felt we could finish the match earlier, but then we dropped off a bit. Then we conceded a goal and their confidence grew. They were simply the better team at that moment.
'We had to defend together as a team, choose the right moment to react and get back into the match but we didn't do that well."
Belgium conceded a late equaliser in their group opener against North Macedonia on Friday and the defence will come under more scrutiny after allowing Wales to score three.
Belgium travel to Liechtenstein on Sept. 4 for their next qualifier before hosting Kazakhstan three days later.

Soccer-Part one complete as Popovic's Australia lock up World Cup berth

Soccer Football - World Cup - AFC Qualifiers - Group C - Saudi Arabia v Australia - King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia - June 10, 2025 Australia coach Tony Popovic celebrates with Joe Gauci after qualifying for the World Cup REUTERS/Stringer (Reuters) -Tony Popovic was already thinking about the improvements Australia needed to make for next year's World Cup finals soon after they sealed automatic qualification with a gritty 2-1 win in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. Popovic took over as coach last September after the Socceroos made a poor start to the third round of Asian qualifying and has overseen five wins and three draws to book a ticket to North America. "Very, very satisfying right now, I'm sure it'll sink in as the days go by," he said shortly after the final whistle at Jeddah's King Abdullah Sports City. "It's been a very intense period since I've joined and I've loved it so far. We've done the first part, qualifying automatically, and now the next part is to be bigger and better for the World Cup." After beating Group C winners Japan 1-0 with a late goal in Perth last week, the Socceroos only needed to avoid a 5-0 loss to the Saudis to take their place in the finals for a sixth straight edition. They got the job done despite going a goal down in front of a hostile crowd, watching a Saudi player have a red card rescinded by VAR, and conceding a late penalty. Goalkeeper Mat Ryan, who was winning his 100th cap, saved the penalty to ensure that goals from Connor Metcalfe and Mitch Duke either side of halftime would give Australia all three points. "To do it here in this atmosphere, you've got to deal with the weather as well, and it's not easy to show that character resilience and then quality, to come back and actually take the lead and win the game," said Popovic. "For Matty Ryan, his career speaks for itself and there's a lot more for him to achieve ... but it's a day he'll never forget." Former centre half Popovic was a member of the Australia squad that reached the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time in 2006, a feat matched by Graham Arnold's team in Qatar three years ago. The 2006 squad had flair as well as the famed Australian resilience, and the task for Popovic over the next year is to build a team that can play a bit as well as fight. "We've built a good foundation now, and we want to really get better, get better kick on and try and do something special the World Cup," he said. "We need to play games to keep improving, giving other players that deserve it an opportunity and then we want to be a squad that's much better than what we are now. I think that's the expectation we should have." (Reporting by Nick Mulvenney, Editing by Peter Rutherford)

No panic, but England ‘not good enough', says Kane

England's Harry Kane celebrates scoring his side's first goal in the 3-1 international friendly defeat to Senegal. (AP pic) NOTTINGHAM : Captain Harry Kane said England must improve quickly if they are to contend for next year's World Cup after slumping to a 3-1 home friendly defeat by Senegal on Tuesday. A first ever defeat against African opposition has put England boss Thomas Tuchel under pressure just four games into his reign. After struggling past minnows Andorra 1-0 in World Cup qualifying on Saturday, Tuchel's 10 changes had little effect as Senegal ran out deserved winners in Nottingham thanks to goals from Ismaila Sarr, Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly. 'Not good enough. We had moments, but with and without the ball things aren't clicking, we're not finding the right tempo,' said Kane, who opened the scoring with his 73rd international goal. 'We've lost that aggressive nature that we had.' Former Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris St-Germain boss Tuchel was hired with the task of taking England one step further to major tournament glory after losing in the last two European Championship finals. Kane believes his side is going through a transition period since Gareth Southgate's departure after Euro 2024, but said there is little time to get things right with the World Cup now just a year away. 'We're not going to panic but we know we need to be better,' added the Bayern Munich striker. 'New ideas, there's new players coming into the team that don't have experience at international level. It's a mixture of things but no excuses. 'We need to find it quick, the World Cup is going to come around really fast so every camp is really important right now.' England are at least in pole position to qualify having won all three of their qualifiers to date against Albania, Latvia and Andorra.

Soccer-Uruguay near World Cup qualification with 2-0 win over Venezuela

Soccer Football - World Cup - South American Qualifiers - Uruguay v Venezuela - Estadio Centenario, Montevideo, Uruguay - June 10, 2025 Uruguay's Facundo Pellistri in action with Venezuela's Miguel Navarro REUTERS/Andres Cuenca MONTEVIDEO (Reuters) -Uruguay took a step closer to securing a 2026 World Cup spot with a 2-0 home victory over Venezuela at the Estadio Centenario on Tuesday, a victory which also snapped a four-match winless run in South American qualifiers. Uruguay dominated much of the first half but struggled to break down a well-organised Venezuelan defence until Rodrigo Aguirre put the hosts ahead in the 42nd minute, heading in at the far post from a Maxi Araujo corner. Giorgian De Arrascaeta doubled Uruguay's lead just two minutes into the second half, firing a superb shot into the top-left corner to seal a win that secures Marcelo Bielsa's side of at least an inter-confederation playoff berth. In other qualifiers, Colombia led already-qualified Argentina 1-0 at halftime thanks to a Luis Díaz goal, while second-placed Ecuador can secure a World Cup spot if they avoid defeat in Peru. In Sao Paulo, Paraguay will qualify with a win or a draw against Brazil, while the hosts can book their place in the tournament with a victory.
