Richards Bay FC piled more misery onto Supersport United's already troubled season with a clinical 2-0 victory at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday – a result that keeps their hopes of a top-eight finish alive with a few matches still to settle.
The win saw the KwaZulu-Natal outfit climb into eighth place, bolstered by a favourable goal difference that could see them retain that position if results go their way.
In contrast, Matsatsantsa a Pitori slumped to 15th place on the Premiership table, one point behind Cape Town City, with the threat of relegation now looming large over them.
For Richards Bay, the turnaround is significant.

After narrowly avoiding relegation through the PSL promotion play-offs last season, they not only secured their top-flight status early, but also positioned themselves for a potential top-eight finish – leapfrogging Kaizer Chiefs, who have dropped to ninth on 32 points after their goalless draw against Polokwane City.
Matsatsantsa, meanwhile, were desperate for points to avoid slipping further into the relegation zone.
Although they didn't dominate possession, the visitors were far more purposeful with the ball.
Their intent was clear as early as the 23rd minute when Wandile Ngema set up Yanela Mbuthuma, whose thunderous header flew just wide – a statement of attacking intent from the visitors.
Just over 10 minutes later, the duo linked up once more to give the visitors the lead.
This time, Ngema delivered another perfectly placed cross, finding Mbuthuma squarely in the middle of the box, and the forward made no mistake as he headed home to put his side 1-0 up in the 33rd minute.
Both sides had decent spells of possession but struggled to find a decisive edge in the final third – a reflection of their recent struggles, with both teams coming into the clash having won just once in their last five outings.
Matsatsantsa closed the first half stronger, but again failed to convert pressure into goals.
The second half followed a similar pattern – with Andre Arendse's charges pressing with determination, but failing to find the finishing touch.
Instead, it was the KZN outfit who showed greater precision and composure in key moments.
Around the hour mark, Mbuthuma turned provider, slipping a deft ball through to Thulani Gumede, who slotted home to double the lead and effectively put the result beyond doubt.
As the minutes ticked down, SuperSport grew increasingly frantic.
Bereft of ideas, their attacking play became increasingly dependent on hopeful long balls – a clear signal of a team running out of confidence and solutions.

Orlando Pirates sign an exciting replacement for Paseka Mako
Orlando Pirates are moving quickly to redress the balance in their squad, with several players already confirmed as leaving. Innocent Maela and Thabiso Monyane have left. Exciting teenage prospect Neo Rapoo is on the wish list. According to reports, Pirates have approached SuperSport United to sign teenager Neo Rapoo. Born in 2005, the Matsatsantsa star can operate in both full-back positions. 'Neo is one of the players that the scouts at Orlando Pirates have identified. The club has already made inquiries about the availability of the player for next season,' an insider told KickOff . According to FARPost , Paseka Mako has joined Kaizer Chiefs until 2028 after signing a three-year deal. 'The diminutive wingback has agreed to a three-year deal with Orlando Pirates, effective July 1.' Like a shortfin Mako shark, Paseka is quick, snappy, compact and aggressive. Mako made 26 appearances in the 2024-2025 season. 2020-2021 was arguably his finest campaign, with four assists in 20 league outings. Meanwhile, 34-year-old Deon Hotto faces an uncertain long-term future. Innocent Maela has left the club, so Pirates are looking a little short at left-back. Mbule could be good for Chiefs, but must change his ways: ‘Disco' Makua
Would it be worthwhile for Kaizer Chiefs to sign Sipho Mbule despite his well-known off-field troubles? After his agent Mike Makaab publicly declared he had offered the troublesome playmaker to Chiefs, Amakhosi midfield legend Frank 'Disco' Makua endorsed the possible recruitment, but warned the wayward star will have to change his behaviour. Mbule's off-field misdemeanours have been well-documented since he emerged at SuperSport United, with Sekhukhune United the latest club to reject him after Mamelodi Sundowns dispatched him there on loan. The 27-year-old midfielder is without a club after Downs opted not to renew his contract, prompting Makaab, in a bizarre social media post, to declare the talented but sometimes wayward midfielder had been 'offered to Chiefs'.

Sekhukhune United in advanced talks with veteran PSL striker
Sekhukhune United are reportedly in advanced talks to sign veteran PSL striker Bradley Grobler from SuperSport United. Grobler's contract with Matsatsantsa expires on 30 June, and while he waited for them, they delayed offering him a new deal. And he subsequently looked elsewhere with Sekhukhune United showing huge interest in his services. Sekhukhune United have relied on Chibuike Ohizu and Andy Boyeli for goals, but with Grobler on board, they could be stronger upfront. The 37-year-old marksman is one of the most prolific strikers in the history of the PSL with 115 goals across all competitions. Grobler will reunite with coach Eric Tinkler whom he worked with at SupersSport United eight years ago. SuperSport United striker Bradley Grobler kicks the ball: Image via Facebook @SuperSport United FC 'SABC Sport can confirm Sekhukhune United have made progress in talks with forward Bradley Grobler, who is a priority target for coach Eric Tinkler ahead of next season,' reports SABC Sport . 'It's understood the finer details are still being ironed out, however, Sekhukhune have tabled an offer that Grobler has already accepted in principle, subject to all paperwork being signed and approved.'
