Auld Lehane's is looking forward to the wedding of the year in Venice

Irish Examiner4 days ago

I have the suit. I have a tie.
The shirt is ironed. The shoes are well polished.
I'm ready for the wedding of the year. All I really need now is the invitation.
Jeff Bezos will be getting married shortly, and I doubt if he will go through with it without inviting Auld Lehane.
As you all know by now, I'm usually in the thick of the action, so Jeff would be insane to leave me out.
The church, I suspect, will be mobbed with the high and the mighty. People from the world of stage, screen, politics, and farming too, of course.
To say I wouldn't be invited would be a notion much too hard for me to contemplate.
I'll be there alright, blowing my nose with emotion and dancing at the disco, just as sure as there is a God up in heaven and milk comes from the pap of a cow.
The wedding, by all accounts, will take place in Venice and between you and me, I don't know how I will get there.
But make no mistake, even if I have to ride a bucking mule halfway across open country, I'll be there.
There is nothing to keep me away. Nothing to keep me here.
Right now, on this farm, the cattle are in the ideal location to look after themselves. They have enough grass for a month and enough water to float a gondola.
My work here is done. I can happily forget about the bullocks and turn my attention to bottles of bubbly, Venice, and the wedding of the year.
I have never been to Venice in the summer before, nor in the winter, either, for that matter. But I believe it is a wonderful place. A place full of boats and all sorts to get you around.

And while I'm a man more accustomed to dry land, I'll be fine altogether on water and will pack a pair of heavy-duty waders just in case we spring a leak.
Believe it or not, I may have known Jeff for many years. I have a feeling I could have met him once back in Ballabuidhe, or someplace, before he became a billionaire.
I could be wrong, but I think we purchased a pony from him, or someone very like him.
Again, I'm open to correction, but did Jeff Bezos ever drive a blue Hiace, back in the day?
Anyhow, regardless of my hazy memory, he sure has come along way, from having a couple of old cardboard boxes in the attic, to blasting rockets into space and God knows where. Fair play to him. I'm all for success.
He has a great name now for space travel, and so I'm hoping, along with the invite, there might be a plane ticket thrown in for good measure.
For while I have no problem in hiring a suit, I would be under pressure to come up with the funds for the flight.
And to make matters all the more expensive for me, I have only recently purchased a top-of-the-range toaster, by way of a wedding gift.
I know Jeff probably has a toaster already, but this one enables the user to toast only one slice at a time, thus reducing your carbon footprint and generally saving the planet from exploding.
And I know Jeff, like every other high flyer, is all for the environment, so 'tis the ideal gift, really, given the current climate.
Anyhow, I'll sign off now and give that old toaster a test run before packing it safely into my suitcase alongside my trunks.
Needless to say, Auld Lehane is looking forward to his trip to Venice and to finally rubbing shoulders with the high and mighty.

In that conversation, Kelly's team claimed their client still hadn't been given life-saving medication after being diagnosed with blood clots last week. In the filing, his attorney said after returning "from the hospital with medically CONFIRMED blood clots, Mr. Kelly is still not getting his prescribed blood thinners." In the federal court filing, his team continued: "After the meeting and obtainment of a signed HIPAA waiver, counsel travelled to Duke University Hospital to seek medical documents that are quickly becoming critical. "But we need the medical documents to support it, which require extensive bureaucratic procedural steps. Those were taken," the filing continued. As The U.S. Sun previously reported, Kelly was rushed to the hospital after allegedly being given an extra dose of his medication. According to a filing by his attorney, the overdose occurred after prison staff at the Federal Correctional Institute Facility in North Carolina administered the medications. On June 10, Kelly was placed in solitary confinement and given anxiety medication, his attorney Beau B. Brindley stated. He was later administered additional medications and instructed to take them, according to court documents reviewed by The Sun . However, three days later, Kelly reported feeling "faint" and "dizzy." Kelly's legal team accused prison officials of punishing him with isolation after he filed an emergency motion. The singer reported seeing "black spots in his vision" before he passed out and was rushed to Duke University Hospital on Friday. While in the ambulance, Kelly claims to have heard one of the prison officers say, "This is going to open a whole new can of worms," according to court documents. Kelly's legal team claimed that his deteriorating health was caused by being administered dangerously high doses of medication. While hospitalized, medical staff discovered blood clots in Kelly's legs and lungs and planned to keep him for surgery, according to his attorney, Beau B. Brindley. However, prison officials reportedly removed Kelly from the hospital and returned him to the facility, placing him back in solitary confinement. Tom Cruise and Dolly Parton among stars set to receive honorary Oscars

Thirty-five years after Tom Cruise received his first Oscar nomination, he's finally getting a trophy. Cruise, choreographer Debbie Allen and Do The Right Thing production designer Wynn Thomas have all been selected to receive honorary Oscar statuettes at the annual Governors Awards, the film academy said. Dolly Parton will also be recognised with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her decades-long charitable work in literacy and education. Tom Cruise at the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick at the 75th international film festival, Cannes, (Vianney Le Caer/Invision/AP) 'This year's Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact,' Academy president Janet Yang said in a statement. Most recipients of the prize historically have not yet won a competitive Oscar themselves. Cruise, 62, has been nominated four times, twice for best actor in Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, once for supporting actor in Magnolia and once for best picture with Top Gun: Maverick. He has also championed theatrical moviegoing and big-scale Hollywood production through the coronavirus pandemic. Ms Yang spotlighted Cruise's 'incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community' Parton has been nominated twice for best original song, for 9 to 5 and, in 2006, Travelin' Thru from the film Transamerica. Dolly Parton poses at the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy Ceremony in New York (Andres Kudacki/AP) But her honour celebrates her humanitarian efforts over the years, through organisations like the Dollywood Foundation and the literary programme Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. Ms Yang said Parton 'exemplifies the spirit' of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The awards will be handed out during an untelevised ceremony on November 16 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles. Last year's recipients included the late Quincy Jones, Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, filmmaker Richard Curtis and casting director Juliet Taylor. Recipients of the prizes, which honour lifetime achievement, contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences and service to the academy are selected by the film academy's board of governors.
