The Hindu15-05-2025

Residents have demanded the construction of new buildings for ration shops in the city as they have to walk long distances to buy essential commodities.
Otteri resident Madan Kumar said those in Shivashanmugapuram B Block in Thiru.Vi.Ka Nagar Assembly Constituency had requested the GCC to facilitate construction of a new ration shop in an old building which used to house a Boys Club. 'The residents of 800 households who have voted in Thiru.Vi. Ka Nagar Assembly Constituency have to walk long distances to Parthasarathypuram in Purasawalkam in the Egmore Assembly Constituency. We request the GCC officials to explore the feasibility of construction of the new ration shop in the Boys Club building which remains closed and is no longer functioning,' he said.
Former Chennai Corporation Councillor S.Mangala Raj said residents in Srinivasapuram had to visit the ration shop in Leith Castle Street to buy essential commodities. 'Srinivasapuram has a large population and has government land to build a new ration shop. The residents need a new ration shop in Srinivasapuram,' he said.
Ward 35 councillor S.Jeevan said Erukkencherry residents demanded a new ration shop in Anjugam Nagar. 'I have spoken about the need for a new ration shop in the Chennai Corporation Council meeting. I will wait for one month. If the GCC officials delay the process for construction of the ration shop, I will utilise my councillors' ward development fund for the building. Of the 11 ration shops in my ward, 10 ration shops were functioning from rented premises before I was elected councillor. In the past few years, I have facilitated the construction of two new ration shops under MLA Local Area Development Fund and two new ration shops under councillors' ward development fund. Six out of the 11 ration shops require new buildings,' he said.
Officials of the Food and Cooperation and Consumer Protection Department said they had been talking to GCC councillors and other elected representatives to identify land for construction of new buildings under councillors' ward development fund and MLA Local Area Development Scheme.

Upon completion, she added, the new campus of TCS will span over 24 lakh sq. ft. of real estate and create 25,000 direct employment opportunities. 'To those who relentlessly malign Bengal and wilfully ignore the strides we are making, let this be a reminder of our capacity to deliver. Bengal is emerging as a hub of innovation, investment, and inclusive growth. BENGAL MEANS BUSINESS, and the world is taking note,' the Chief Minister's social media post further read. Additionally, on June 4, the Chief Minister had shared that semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries will set up a fabless centre for design and testing at their Kolkata Power Centre. Fabless refers to in-house design and marketing of semiconductors, but with the fabrication (fab) process outsourced to a third-party manufacturer. 'We have already facilitated their operations by allotting 13,000 of space at the STPI IT Park in Sector V, Salt Lake. An additional 19,000 has been requested and the process is underway,' Ms Banerjee wrote on social media. She claimed that Santech Global Inc, a New Jersey-based firm specialising in semiconductors, nanoelectronics and telecommunication, has also 'shown keen interest' in setting up a major project in Kolkata. The Chief Minister added that the West Bengal government is working closely with startups, academia, and industry stakeholders to develop a 'comprehensive power electronics system' in Bengal. 'We are in the final stages of drafting the Global Capability Centre (GCC) Policy for West Bengal, which will further strengthen our State's position as a hub of next-generation technology and innovation. These initiatives reflect our commitment to building a robust semiconductor ecosystem in Bengal, creating new opportunities, generating meaningful employment for our youth, and positioning West Bengal at the forefront of India's technological renaissance,' Ms. Banerjee wrote.

GCC faces backlash for irregularities in construction of EV parking shed

CHENNAI: PMK president Dr Anbumani Ramadoss on Tuesday condemned the Tamil Nadu government and Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) for serious procedural violations and irregularities in the construction of an EV (battery vehicle) parking shed at Marina Beach. This is based on a TNIE report that appeared on Tuesday, stating that the parking shed had already been constructed before the tenders for the project were even floated. In a statement, Anbumani said that floating tenders for an already-constructed shed raised questions about transparency and accountability. 'This is a blatant breach of norms. As per rules, tenders must be invited before any construction begins, and only qualified contractors quoting the lowest rates should be awarded the work,' he said. He further alleged that awarding contracts to politically connected individuals before tender procedures conclude has become common in Tamil Nadu. 'Those responsible for this violation must be held accountable and punished under the law,' he said in the statement. Anbumani also called into question the evasive responses from corporation officials when asked how the project was carried out before the date for the final submission of bids drew to a close. According to the tender, the estimated cost of the shed, meant to house two 11-seater battery-operated vehicles for shuttle services at Marina, was Rs 8.3 lakh. The project was launched recently by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.
