Temple student, 18, dies from pole fall during Eagles celebration
Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Temple student Tyler Sabapathy has died from injuries he sustained after falling from a light pole during a celebration of the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl berth, the school announced. He was 18.
The incident occurred Sunday night at 15th and Market streets in Center City. Sabapathy died Tuesday. A viral video showed the fall, with sources later confirming to multiple news outlets that Sabapathy was the man in the footage.
"The loss of a promising 18-year-old man like Tyler is both tragic and traumatic," Temple president John Fry said. "There are no words that can make sense of it, and the entire Temple community mourns his passing.
"Our hearts go out to Tyler's family, friends, classmates and all who knew and loved him."
Video of Sabapathy's fall showed the Temple club gymnast climbing the pole before falling and eventually landing on his head.
"A native of Toronto, Canada, Tyler was already a thriving student within Temple University's College of Public Health, where he was majoring in exercise and sport science," Fry said. "As an accomplished gymnast with more than 120 medals in provincial, regional and international competitions, Tyler was fascinated with injury prevention, and this ultimately led him to pursue the major that he did.
"He no doubt had a bright future ahead of him, and it is so tragic that we will not be able to see how he would have made his mark on the world."
The Philadelphia Police Department reported several incidents linked to the celebration, including 31 citations for disorderly conduct or failure to disperse. Four assaults on police officers were reported. There were two shootings, a stabbing, a vandalism incident and a report of a vehicle hitting multiple pedestrians.
Rebekah DeShields, 26, was later charged with aggravated assault and other charges in connect to the vehicular incident.
The Eagles will battle the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9 in New Orleans.

Officers at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility in Texas discovered the methamphetamine concealed in a shipping manifesto and disguised as tomatillos. "The cargo environment continues to be a top choice for trafficking organizations but our CBP officers along with our tools and technology are a force to be reckoned with," said Carlos Rodriguez, port director of the Pharr port. Officials seized the drugs and the vehicle they were being transported in. At the same port of entry, officers encountered a 2023 Porsche Cayenne, valued at $55,000, driven by Dileen Raad Sadullah, 39, a Canadian citizen. Border Patrol officers reported that Sadullah's story became inconsistent when questioned by the agents at the initial inspection, which resulted in his being detained for a secondary questioning. "During the secondary examination of the motor vehicle, officers discovered that the Porsche had been reported stolen in Canada earlier that day," a release from CBP said. CBP verified his identity and confirmed with Canadian officials that the vehicle was stolen, the U.S. equivalent of a felony. Sadullah and the vehicle were detained by Canadian law enforcement. That incident also occurred at the Pharr port. Agents apprehended Alan Alexis Ornelas, 31, of Desoto, Tex., at the Hidalgo International Bridge crossing and investigated him in connection with an arrest warrant, then detained him. "Ornelas has been wanted since September, 2024 and is charged with capital murder by terror, a first-degree felony in the state of Texas," a release from CBP said. Ornelas was transported to the Hidalgo County jail where he awaits extradition to Dallas County.

Britain agrees to open child sexual grooming investigation

"These are the most important people in the discussions," chancellor Rachel Reeves said on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg program. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been criticized for ignoring reports about grooming gangs, and initially appeared to resist an independent investigation, but did agree to open an inquiry after months of pressure from conservatives. The results of a previous report are to be released Monday, and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is scheduled to address the findings with Parliament. When promoted, Reeves said Sunday that Starmer has long been focused on the grooming gang activity, and she shifted the blame to the Conservative party that held office prior to Starmer's election, intimating that the previous administration had not taken action to address the issue, either. "Our prime minister has always been really focused on the victims, and not grandstanding but actually doing the practical things to ensure something like this never happens again," she said Sunday. Maggie Oliver, a former detective with the Greater Manchester Police who resigned over the way the said grooming cases were handled in Rochdale, said both parties have been "dragged kicking and screaming to this point" to address grooming gang allegations. "For me, I can only look at them with contempt, because I see on the ground the suffering their neglect has caused," she said on the Sunday program. A prior report seven years in the making conclude that child sexual abuse was "epidemic" across the nation, and made 20 recommendations in 2022. Advocates said many of the victims have been waiting years for justice.

Manhunt for suspect in Minnesota lawmaker shooting continues
June 15 (UPI) -- The search for the man suspected of shooting two Minnesota lawmakers in a "politically motivated" attack continued for the second day Sunday as authorities urged residents to keep their doors locked and cars secured. State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot dead Saturday in their Brooklyn Park home, near Minneapolis. Earlier, State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were wounded when a gunman shot them "multiple times" in Champlin. The suspect was later identified as 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, who has not been located. Boelter's roommate told KMSP‑TV that he has multiple vehicles, one of which had been modified to look like a police car and was found outside of Hortman's house. In an emergency alert sent out Sunday in nearby Sibley County, authorities said a second vehicle owned by Boelter was found in Faxon Township. "Keep your doors locked and vehicles secured," the alert said. "Report suspicious activity to 911." Officials also said they would be going door-to-door to ask residents to search their properties for Boelter. Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar indicated in an interview Sunday that Boelter may have left the state. Authorities have also put out an alert for him in South Dakota, she revealed on NBC News' Meet the Press. Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said Saturday that investigators found a "manifesto" in Boelter's vehicle that included the names of other possible targets. An official who saw the list told NBC News it included officials who supported reproductive rights. President Donald Trump on Sunday called Gov. Tim Walz a "terrible governor" and "a grossly incompetent person" in comments to ABC's Rachel Scott but said he "may call him." The Minnesota shootings came ahead of another shooting Saturday at a "No Kings" protest against Trump in Salt Lake City that took place around the country. A protest outside of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Oregon was declared a riot by the Portland Police Bureau on Saturday.
