Where Did Dodge's Scat Pack Name Come From?
Over the course of its nearly a century of existence, Chrysler and its various associates — Dodge, Plymouth, Jeep, et al. — has produced some of the best named cars in the business. You can't argue with vehicles called the Challenger, the Daytona, the Prowler, the Magnum, the Dart, and the Wrangler. Along with its legendary cars, the company has also produced some of the best trim package names around, like Swinger, Hellcat, and Warlock. Honestly, when it comes to names that capture the imagination, Chrysler is one of the best to ever do it.
Of all the names that Chrysler has used over the years, Scat Pack is one of the most famous. It's also possibly one of the most contentious names out there and has been fodder for passionate discussions among gearheads for half a century. Is it a model? Is it a trim package? Doesn't "scat" mean poop? Where did that name come from, anyway, and what does it mean?
As is the case with a lot of the coolest things in the automotive world, the answer to all those questions lies in the Mad Men-era of advertising. Let's travel back to the heady days of the muscle car era and take a look at how the Scat Pack came to be, shall we?

In 1961, Chrysler engineer and Ramchargers racer Dan Mancini stuffed a 361 B big block V8 into a '61 Valiant and took it to the drag strip. This feat of mechanical chicanery kicked off a near decade-long wave of shadetree mechanics and pro racers alike stuffing big, fire-breathing Chrysler V8s into lightweight Mopar A body cars. It wasn't until 1967, however, that the big brains at Chrysler decided to get in on the big mill/small car action themselves with the release of the 383-powered second-gen Dart GTS.
In 1968, Dodge released the all-new Charger R/T and Coronet R/T, and with them came the Scat Pack name. Penned by the Ross Roy ad agency out of Detroit, MI, Scat Pack was, allegedly, a combination of the old-timey word "scat" meaning "get lost" or "get outta here" and a reference to the Sinatra-led Rat Pack. What made the Scat Pack unique was that it wasn't a specific brand or trim package, but a collective name for Dodge's three performance models — the aforementioned B-Body Charger and Challenger R/T and the previous year's big-bore Dart GTS. Relatively quickly, these three were joined by the Coronet-derived Super Bee.
To set them apart from other, more pedestrian Chrysler products, the Scat Pack cars wore "Bumblebee Stripes," a pair of contrasting color racing stripes (typically black or white) that ran horizontally over the deck lid and down the side of each quarter panel. In addition to their trademark stripes, the Scat Pack cars got their own mascot — a grinning, biomechanical bumblebee wearing a white helmet and black visor equipped with Cragars, redline tires, and a big V8 on his back. There was even a combination owners' group/fan club called the Scat Pack Club that published a monthly newsletter containing all the Scat Pack news fit to print.
While it was wildly successful, tastes and models changed and Dodge shelved the Scat Pack after the 1971 model year. The fastest bee in the west was absent from Dodge advertising, and from the cultural zeitgeist at large, for more than four decades. Then, in 2013, the Scat Pack name — complete with a more aggressive, facelifted racing bee logo — returned at that year's SEMA trade show and Mopar heads lost their collective minds.
The new Scat Pack, like its predecessor, encompassed the Dart, Charger, and Challenger (history doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme). In 2014, the Scat Pack was much like it was in the old days, just a collective noun for a particular set of fast Mopars. In 2015, however, it became a full-fledged trim package. Eventually, after the neo-Dart's demise in 2016, the Scat Pack moniker was used to describe the 392-powered Chargers and Challengers slotted in between the R/T models and the fire-breathing Hellcats.
With the death of the Hemi L-series in 2023, the Scat Pack name once again disappeared from Dodge's lineup, but only briefly. When Dodge unveiled the new Charger Daytona EV last year, it presented the muscle car in two different trim levels: R/T and Scat Pack. The electric Charger Daytona Scat Pack has a whopping 670 horsepower, way more than any Scat Pack before it, and it even comes with a redesigned bumblebee logo. While the version of the new Charger with a gas six-cylinder won't use the Scat Pack name, if the rumors are true and the Charger gains a V8 variant, maybe the bee will find its way onto that car's fenders as well.

How Nissan's cupholder guru is changing the way you drink in your car
How Nissan's cupholder guru is changing the way you drink in your car Show Caption Hide Caption Car maintenance tips you need to know These basic car maintenance tips are vital to your car's longevity. ProblemSolved, Reviewed New drink containers keep changing the shape of cupholders. Door-pocket bottle holders must be easy and safe for the driver to use. The next time you don't spill hot coffee in your lap driving to work, spare a moment to thank Chris Fischer. The vehicle development engineer at Nissan's North American tech center in Farmington Hills, Michigan is one of the engineers and designers automakers charge with staying a step ahead of the world's cup, coffee and container manufacturers. He has been Nissan's go-to guy for cupholders since 2015, when complaints about cupholders weighed down the automaker's customer satisfaction scores ― a key benchmark. It's full-time work. 'Refillable bottles were becoming a big deal, and they were a different size' from the 12-ounce cans and Big Gulp cups automakers had focused on, Fischer told me recently while holding up a large CamelBak bottle. He brought a bottle just like it with him to Japan. To this day, it remains in Nissan's box of samples, all painted a neutral color like modeler's clay for easy digital scanning. Struggling automakers: Can troubled automaker Nissan survive the next 5 years? Why the experts say yes 'Americans put a high value on drinking in our vehicles, and we use a wide variety of sizes,' Fischer said. That behavior was behind cupholder mania, which began in the United States with Chrysler minivans in the 1980s. Cupholders became so popular that automakers promoted the number they offered in a vehicle alongside fuel economy and airbags. But the right design is a moving target. Keeping up with consumer behavior 'How do you fit a CamelBak and a 6-ounce aluminum can in the same holder?' Fischer asked. One answer, spring-loaded plastic fingers that adjust to different sizes of bottles, raised a new question: What shape and strength "finger" will hold a 20-ounce insulated Yeti, but not crush an 8-ounce "short" paper cup? 'You also have to be aware of the holder's depth,' he said. It must be high enough to hold tall bottles, and short enough that it doesn't knock the top off a small paper coffee cup. 'Too big or too small is a problem.' Another challenge: Some people bring their ceramic coffee mugs from home into the vehicle. That led to the development Nissan calls a 'dog bone,' an open space connecting two round holders. A mug handle fits there, though I've discovered it's also a great place for loose coins to take up residence. The design evolved from round holders with a connecting channel to the current Pathfinder's hourglass shape with rounded plastic fingers to keep small containers in place. Design continues to adapt As soon as one question is answered, a new type of container poses another: What to do with juice boxes? Minivans and family SUVs now have square receptacles for them for their kid-dominated rear seats. Extra-large water bottles also pose a challenge. The answer: modified door pockets with holders that are easy to reach without distracting the driver from traffic. 'We're always looking at data,' Fischer said. 'We're the voice of the customer.' The 2022 Pathfinder's cupholders had the highest satisfaction scores in its segment, he said. 'We did our job. It seems like a small thing, but we want to sweat the details. The way cupholders work is important to customer satisfaction. It's a reason to buy a car.' Contact Mark Phelan: mmphelan@ Follow him on Twitter @mark_phelan. Here's how Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa can earn up to $23 million annually
Stellantis' new CEO Antonio Filosa will earn at least $4 million annually in his first two years at the helm, rising to up to $23 million a year from 2028, including bonuses, a document showed, although his remuneration will be lower than predecessor Carlos Tavares. Filosa officially becomes CEO of the owner of brands such as Chrysler, Peugeot and Jeep at the end of this month, tasked with turning around the carmaker's performance and recovering lost U.S. market share. He will receive an annual base pay of $1.8 million, a company document issued ahead of a July 18 extraordinary general meeting showed, just below the $2.3 million granted to Tavares. On top of his starting salary, Filosa will pocket annual bonuses worth up to 400% of his base pay, based on the achievement of financial and business plan objectives set out by the company. Note to the next Stellantis CEO: Your first order of business, kill these 4 brands Filosa, formerly Stellantis' North American chief, will also be granted shares as long-term incentives (LTI), based on the company's performance, starting from up to 500% of his salary this year and up to a maximum of 780% from 2027. Until the potential LTIs are paid, in 2028, the company will provide the top manager a cash award of $1.2 million each year. Tavares, who abruptly resigned as CEO last December due to disagreements with the board over strategy, pocketed a final $39.9 million compensation package, despite a dramatic plunge in sales and profit and broken relationships with suppliers, dealers and investors. In 2023, when Stellantis reported record results, Tavares earned about $42 million. Filosa will also benefit from the company's U.S. health care and retirement plans and tax equalization benefits, as well as having access to other fringe benefits such as the personal use of the company's aircraft and vehicles, personal security and annual medical checkups. Filosa's term will be for five years, "to ensure leadership stability and maximize the ability of the company to respond effectively to profound and prolonged industry change," according to the document. Filosa will be appointed an executive board member at the July 18 EGM. Tavares was also appointed CEO for five years but left after just under four years. Chrysler Is About To Become An 'Experiment'
The latest car news, reviews, and features. Chrysler's current status? 'Ripe for a new chapter,' according to Ralph Grilles, design chief at Stellantis. Gilles gave the viewpoint to Automotive News during an interview Friday at the automaker's centennial celebration. With 100 years under Chrysler's belt Gille's said 'it's time for us to pivot' and 'we're going to experiment with the brand.' Currently, Chrysler offers one single model in the showroom: the Chrysler Pacifica minivan. You might say the automaker has nowhere to go but up. Gilles, an executive at the automaker, acknowledged the current state of affairs by stating the brand is going to stand for 'a brand-new conquest customer.' Conquest customers are those that are stolen from other competing brands. Chrysler Portal Concept FCA US LLC Chrysler was set to be an all-electric brand by 2028. The future seems to be in a state of change. Development on an electric crossover, that was supposedly not based on the Airflow concept yet the concept looked nearly production ready and intent, was halted in January. It's unclear if, or when, that will be unpaused. The electric mid-size crossover to be based on the new STLA Large platform, which underpins the Jeep Wagoneer S electric SUV, was to launch in 2025. Chrysler CEO Chris Feuell told The Drive in November the Chrysler Pacifica minivan will receive a refresh in 2026. Meaning, now, the next product from Chrysler will quite possibly be a second refresh of its current minivan a year from now. The refresh will bring design elements from the Chrysler Halcyon concept, which debuted in 2024, to the automaker's … minivan. The concept was an exotic-looking swoopy four-door couple with coach doors. The refresh seems to be still be green lit and coming. Feuell said the Pacifica refresh would be followed a year later in 2027 by an electric Pacifica. It's unclear at this point if the electric Pacifica is still on track and in the cards for 2027. At the time, the executive wouldn't specify whether the plug-in hybrid Pacifica, currently on sale, or a range-extended Pacifica akin to the Ram Charger EREV pickup truck, would exist. It's possible with Ram's most recent lineup changes–the Hemi V8 returned, the Ramcharger launch was moved up and the electric Ram Rev has been delayed to who knows when–the electric Pacifica won't arrive in 2027 as originally planned. The Drive reached out to Chrysler for comment regarding the timeline of the electric Pacifica and will update this story if or when the automaker responds. Chrysler's sole remaining product today is about one thing: function. Gilles said while the future is about aerodynamics, it also has to be about function. The automaker needs to get people to fall in love with low cars. The reason? They are more efficient. 'We're trying to get people to like that, to understand that, to fall in love again, with lowrider,' the design exec said. Understanding the future of Chrysler might be understanding its past and executive's tastes. At the end of 2023 the last Hemi-powered Chrysler 300C rolled off the assembly line. Earlier in 2023 an electric Chrysler 300 successor had reportedly already been shown to dealers. The EV was said to be based on the STLA Large electric platform, which underpins not only the Jeep Wagoneer S, but also the Dodge Charger Daytona. The one vehicle with a special place in Gille's heart? 'Without question, the 2006 300C SRT8. Just a beautiful blend of muscle and elegance,' the exec said. But Chrysler's calling card, according to Gilles, has always been about value for money. 'It is the value for money, the prestige for money, the presence for money. That's what I want to be about going forward.' And while that value proposition is great, it's unclear beyond a refreshed Pacifica and maybe an electric Pacifica, what exactly Chrysler has on offer to bake that value for money into. Maybe that's part of the experiment? Got tips? Send 'em to tips@
