WNBA legend Candace Parker downplays Caitlin Clark's rough on-court treatment
WNBA Legend Candace Parker Says Caitlin Clark's Tough Treatment Is No Surprise: 'Star Players Aren't Ever Treated Fairly'/ Image composite: Instagram, File (AP)
As debate swirls around how Caitlin Clark is being handled on the court, WNBA legend Candace Parker has weighed in with a clear and candid take: the physical play Clark is facing isn't out of the ordinary, it's the price of stardom.
Speaking to TMZ Sports in Beverly Hills this week, the three-time WNBA champion and two-time league MVP responded to claims that Clark has been unfairly roughed up during her short WNBA career. Parker didn't sugarcoat it.
'Star players aren't ever treated fairly,' Parker told TMZ Sports.
While she didn't elaborate further, the message was direct. In Parker's view, hard fouls and heightened physicality come with being a marquee name.
And for someone who has carried that weight herself, she sees Clark's treatment not as unfair, but as expected.
Still, Parker made it clear that she respects Clark's game. She spoke highly of the 22-year-old Indiana Fever guard's early accomplishments, especially how quickly Clark has begun matching some of Parker's own on-court milestones.
'It's awesome,' Parker said. 'It's great. I think she has so many more years to come of greatness.

So it's been good watching her play.'
Clark has already recorded three triple-doubles in her WNBA career, matching Parker's own mark, despite having only entered the league last year following a historic college run at Iowa.
Visibility comes with pressure
Clark's meteoric rise has made her one of the most visible figures in the league. As the face of the Indiana Fever and a national draw for the WNBA, her presence on the court attracts both attention and, increasingly, contact.
Many fans and media voices have questioned whether Clark is being unfairly targeted by opposing players, or if referees should be offering more protection. But for Parker, the answer is straightforward: it's part of what comes with the role. Physicality, she suggests, is a rite of passage for players who stand out.
Fever feeling the impact of Clark's absence
While the debate continues off the court, Clark herself has been sidelined with a left quadriceps injury she sustained in a game against the New York Liberty.
She's expected to miss at least two weeks.
Her absence was felt immediately. Without Clark, the Fever fell 83–77 to the Washington Mystics in their most recent game. Indiana had started strong, leading much of the first half. But Washington turned the tide late in the second quarter and never looked back.
The Mystics were led by Shakira Austin, who scored 13 points in the win. The result dropped Indiana's early-season record to 2–3 (.400) and moved Washington into third place in the Eastern Conference standings, overtaking the Fever.

Marcus Stoinis wildly thumps his chest in front of Rohit Sharma after dismissing MI great during IPL 2025 Qualifier 2
After over two hours of delay due to rain, Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025 between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians began at 9:45 PM, much to the delight of the fans. And soon enough, the blockbuster clash delivered a fiery moment on the field as Marcus Stoinis removed veteran opener Rohit Sharma early in the Powerplay. Rohit had received a lucky reprieve in the second over of the match when Azmatullah Omarzai dropped him off Kyle Jamieson's delivery; however, the former MI captain wasn't too lucky the second time. Rohit looked to capitalise with a big hit against Stoinis as the Australian all-rounder banged one into the pitch. Rohit went for the pull, aiming to clear deep square leg, but mistimed it straight into the hands of Vijaykumar Vyshak in the deep. Stoinis reserved a rather fiery celebration after the dismissal, as he let out a roar and thumped his chest in celebration. The wicket came as a huge relief for PBKS, and particularly for Omarzai. Rohit departed for 8 off seven deliveries. The dismissal was relieving for Punjab, particularly because of Rohit's heroics after he was similarly dropped in MI's Eliminator match against Gujarat Titans. Rohit received double reprieves in the game and he punished the Titans for the lost chances, smashing a brilliant 81 off 50 deliveries which steered the side to a mammoth score of 228/5. MI eventually registered a 20-run win, with Rohit being named the Player of the Match. The toss, which took place at its scheduled time of 7 PM, saw Shreyas Iyer opting to bat under overcast conditions. There was no rain forecast, however, and the umpires and players were ready to take the field when sudden drizzle hit the stadium. Relentless rains meant the fans had to wait for over two hours for the action to begin in Ahmedabad. The winner of the match meets Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the same venue on Tuesday; RCB defeated Punjab Kings by 8 wickets in a thumping performance on Wednesday to book a place in the title clash.

IPL 2025 Qualifier 2: PBKS drop Rohit Sharma once, but don't repeat GT's mistake; send him back for 8
When everyone expected Gujarat Titans (GT) to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Eliminator against Mumbai Indians (MI), they made a costly mistake — dropping Rohit Sharma's catch not once, but twice. The batter then made them pay as he smashed 81 off 50 balls. Now, in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Punjab Kings (PBKS) repeated that same error, letting the 'Hitman' off the hook when he was on just 3 runs. However, Rohit gave PBKS another opportunity — and this time, they didn't let it slip. Rohit Sharma's dismissal After Azmatullah Omarzai dropped him in the 1.5 over, captain Shreyas Iyer handed the ball to Marcus Stoinis. The Australian all-rounder struck on just his second delivery, dismissing Rohit Sharma for 8 runs. It was Stoinis' first wicket in 13.3 overs in IPL 2025. Stoinis dug it in short, and Rohit went for the pull, aiming for six. However, he picked out deep square leg, where Vijaykumar Vyshak was positioned. After the catch was taken, the Aussie thumped his chest and roared — "Come onnn!" PBKS opt to bowl against MI as rain delays start of Qualifier 2
Punjab Kings (PBKS) won the toss and opted to bowl against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. 'We've recovered pretty well. Everyone is in high spirits. Environment is top notch. Chahal back,' said PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer following the toss. 'We would have bowled as well. It [the pitch] has gotten flatter over the last couple of years. Playing a crucial game after a one day break is tough. Reece Topley replaces Richard Gleeson,' MI captain Hardik Pandya said. The winner of this clash will claim a place in the IPL 2025 final, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) await. However, just as the players and umpires walked out for an on-time start, the rain arrived yet again, forcing everyone back off the field. The covers came on for the second time, and the start has been delayed. Earlier, a light drizzle in Ahmedabad had prompted the ground staff to cover the entire square. But with five minutes to go for the scheduled start, the covers began to come off, raising hopes of a timely start, until the weather intervened again.
