Ex-Hibs ace strikes to sink Easter Road men as Dons win

Scotsman26-04-2025

It had to be Kevin Nisbet, didn't it? Just as Hibs had a new club record of 18 straight top-flight games without loss just within their grasp, up popped the former Easter Road favourite with an absolute wonder goal.
The Aberdeen striker's sumptuous, lobbed finish beyond a helpless Jordan Smith secured a home victory for the Dons with all sorts of implications in the race for European places. Jimmy Thelin's men are now level with David Gray's side on points, although Hibs remain in third place on goal difference; already, it feels like this race to be Best of the Rest will go right to the wire.
In a Hibs team missing the injured Lewis Miller, opening the door of Warren O'Hora to return on the right side of the back three, the visitors had to defend a lot of crosses in opening exchanges that saw both sides create chances. Rocky Bushiri, a man who has stamped his name all over this fixture in the past, had the distinction of blocking a shot at both ends of the park – one from Topi Keskinen, the second an unintentional stop on team-mate Jack Iredale's goal-bound effort – in a crazy 20 minutes that also saw Martin Boyle rip one shot wide and Josh Campbell hit the post with a header.
Kieron Bowie, promoted from the bench after his two goals in the ritual dismemberment of Dundee last time out, looked a handful from the outset, occupying defenders and running channels to good effect. Hibs also had a scrappy 'goal' disallowed for a foul on the keeper.
Gray's men would have known that a draw suited them, of course, in terms of fending off Aberdeen's challenge for third place. But that didn't stop them from giving as good as they got.
Chris Cadden probably should have crossed instead of shot with an opening that fell to him, allowing Leighton Clarkson to clear. And Campbell miscued a shot from decent range at a reasonable angle.
Aberdeen throwing Hibs-bound Jamie McGrath into the contest was certainly a bold move, as Sir Humphrey would put it. Aye son, go on and play yourself out of Europe next season …
As it transpired, Nisbet was the man to make the difference, picking up a half-cleared ball just outside the box and finishing with impeccable technique. It looked like he enjoyed the moment, to say the least.
1 . GK Jordan Smith 6.5/10
Could do nothing about the goal. Really good in his distribution, both with feet and through some excellent throws. Made an excellent injury-time stop from Dabbagh to keep it at 1-0. | SNS Group Photo Sales
2 . RCB Warren O'Hora 6/10
Irish centre-half marked his first start since March with an assured performance, slotting into a defensive unit comfortable in playing a high line. | SNS Group Photo Sales
3 . CB Rocky Bushiri 6/10
Involved in a lot of goal mouth action at both ends. Could he have got more on the clearing header that fell to Nisbet? | SNS Group Photo Sales
4 . LCB Jack Iredale
With the ink on his new three-year deal barely dry, Iredale brought his usual aggression and discipline to a solid defensive display. Sacrificed late on as Hibs went for broke. | SNS Group Photo Sales

Arsenal deal for Viktor Gyokeres at risk as Sporting issue threat

Arsenal's deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres could be at risk as Sporting CP have threatened to increase the striker's asking price. Earlier this week, Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas, hit out at Gyokeres' agent over suggestions that a transfer fee had already been agreed ahead of the summer transfer window. Gyokeres has a €100 million (£85.1m) release clause in his contract but Sporting have been willing to sell the Sweden international for lower than that amount. Varandas was angered by claims that Sporting have agreed to sell Gyokeres for €60m (£51m) plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons and warned the striker's representative, Hasan Cetinkaya, that he is 'making the situation worse'. During his negotiations to bring Gyokeres to Sporting in a £20m deal from Coventry City two years ago, Cetinkaya secured an exclusive sales mandate which means that the Portuguese champions will have to pay the agent 10 per cent of the value of any rejected offer above €60m (£51m). It is understood that if Cetinkaya decides to activate that mandate this summer, Sporting will respond by demanding that Gyokeres' €100m (£85.1m) release clause is paid in full. Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, met with his counterpart at Sporting, Bernardo Palmeiro, in Menorca to discuss a deal for Gyokeres this week. Arsenal's initial proposal worth an €55m (£46.8m) plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons was rejected but an improved offer is expected. Sporting are believed to be holding out for a deal worth closer to €80m (£68.1m) including add-ons. More Trending Reports in Portugal on Thursday claimed that there is a 'growing optimism' in Gyokeres' camp that a deal can be agreed between Arsenal and Sporting. Manchester United also remain in the race to sign Gyokeres and are hoping his strong relationship with Ruben Amorim can overcome the striker's reservations about the lack of European football at Old Trafford next season. United have indicated to Sporting that they are willing to pay €60m (£51.1m) up front, plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in performance-related bonuses. Gyokeres, who finished the season with 54 goals in 52 games and helped Sporting win the domestic double in Portugal, issued a cryptic message on Instagram on Thursday which read: 'There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Former Northern Ireland star thrilled to take reins of St Johnstone Under-19s

Griffin, who earned 29 caps, progressed through the Saints academy after arriving in Perth from Belfast as a 15-year-old in 1994. He made more than 120 appearances for the club, as well as earning international recognition. Griffin captained Saints at the age of just 18 and was involved in memorable European games against VPS Vaasa and Monaco. The 47-year-old, who officially begins his new role on Monday, has been football co-ordinator with Saints in the Community. 'This is a chance that I have always really wanted, and it is a great opportunity for me,' he told club media. 'I started here as a 15-year-old wanting to become a footballer. I lived my dream through this football club. 'Now being able to help other youngsters try to live that same dream is going to be very special. Pre-season is just around the corner so it is an exciting time. I like to think I've learned a lot over the years in football — and sometimes learned the hard way. I have experience to pass on to these guys. 'I'll need them all to work hard. It's down to them how far they want to go. But I'll certainly be doing my very best to help them every step of the way. 'This football club has a reputation of bringing talented kids through the academy — there is no reason we can't keep doing it. I have worked with the St Johnstone Community Trust for a long time now, starting with Atholl Henderson. It has been a great time. 'A big thank you goes to everyone at the trust and to all the kids and parents who I have had the pleasure of dealing with over the years.' Griffin's career included spells with Dundee United, Stockport County and Livingston before finishing his playing days at Arbroath. He made his Northern Ireland debut against Germany aged 18 in 1996 and also scored a famous winner against the Republic of Ireland at Lansdowne Road in 1999. He is among the players featured in a new mural celebrating Northern Ireland's top players throughout its footballing history. Situated in Battenburg Street off the Shankill Road, the mural features 14 of the region's most acclaimed players, including another former Saints player, George O'Boyle. Funds towards the artwork were gathered by Northern Ireland football supporters' clubs across the Greater Shankill area.

The £62.5million Brazilian new boy admitted he has always idolised the Red Devils team which won the Champions League back in 2008. He watched them every week on the television at his grandma's before going outside and playing on his own version of Old Trafford. And of all the star names in Sir Alex Ferguson's squad back then, it was former England captain Roo who stood out the most for the boy from Brazil. Cunha, 26, saw some qualities in his new club's 253-goal all-time leading scorer that he could relate to — and hopes he can bring to the modern-day squad. 'I liked Rooney at the front. Wow! He is someone I have a lot of similar things in my game, as I always give everything. 'He was the No. 10, I remember it on his shirt and everyone loved the skills of the player — but he always brought more. 'He would slide tackle to try to take the ball, this kind of energy inside of him was a big example.' But Ryan Giggs as well. 'I can imagine the team now — it started with Edwin van der Sar in the goal, Rio Ferdinand with Nemanja Vidic the defenders. Paul Scholes, wow, Michael Carrick. 'That team had a big impact on my teenage years.' Advertisement Cunha's performances at Molineux and his 17 goals for Wolves last season made him one of the hottest properties in the Premier League this summer. United might be a hard sell to some players after the dismal season they have just endured. There will be no European football next term after they limped home in 15th place with just 42 points — their lowest-ever total in Premier League history. But after following the club since he was a boy growing up in Joao Pessoa the chance to put on the famous red shirt at the real Theatre of Dreams was an opportunity he could not turn down. 'But when you have always dreamed to play here, it's easier to come to this decision. 7 7 Advertisement 'It's hard to explain but for me, no one else is like United. 'I know it's been a hard season for everyone, so my decision shows what this club is to me and what I believe this club can be.' Recalling how he first fell in love with the Red Devils, he revealed: 'My house didn't have the channel to watch the Premier League and my cousin's house didn't have it either. 'He's older than me and supports United — he showed me the way to start watching the Premier League and the need to support United. We could only watch the Premier League at my grandma's house, so we organised to go every weekend. Advertisement 'When we played together in the street, on the beach, on the gravel, we called those pitches Old Trafford. 'So, wow, it's so hard to be here now thinking about the past — it's very emotional for me. 'It's the most common phrase you can say in this moment but yeah, it's a dream come true for me. 'It's my dream team, the team for me.' Advertisement In 2017 Cunha hoped his wish of one day playing for the Red Devils was about to come true when he competed against them for Coritiba in the youth team tournament the Dallas Cup. He said: 'One of the directors at Coritiba said a director from United had asked about me. 'I was so excited, imagining a dream when I go to United — but after that the conversations stopped. 'But I think this was the start of my journey. Playing against United was a dream. Wow!' Advertisement Eight years later, he has finally got his wish and Cunha believes it is coming at the perfect time for him. And part of the move is down to manager Amorim who Cunha admitted helped convince him to make the switch. He said: "I have a lot of faith in him. I hope he succeeds in conquering the world like he did in Portugal. "I'm here to help the team and help him. All our discussions made my decision easier." Advertisement There have been flashpoints during his 2½ seasons at Molineux — which started with a five-month loan spell in January 2023 — but now is the time to relax, knowing he has realised his ambition. He added: 'It's the perfect time to come here and now I need to be calm. I've learned from my mistakes. 'There is not one player who does not come here and think about the glory days, all the times they won the Premier League. 'I want to put this club on top and do everything to help them conquer these things.'
