Blue Jays put OF Varsho on 10-day IL with left hamstring strain, activate RHP Swanson
TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays put outfielder Daulton Varsho on the 10-day injured list Sunday because of a strained left hamstring, one day after the 2024 Gold Glove winner left a game against the Athletics after injuring his leg running the bases.
The Blue Jays also activated right-hander Erik Swanson off the 60-day IL and recalled utilityman Davis Schneider from Triple-A Buffalo. Left-hander Easton Lucas was optioned to Triple-A.
In the third inning of Saturday's 8-7 win, Varsho grabbed the back of his thigh after rounding second base on a base hit off the wall, hopped a few steps and fell near third base as he was tagged out by Max Schuemann.
Varsho missed the early part of the season after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery. He has a .207 average with eight homers and 20 RBIs in 24 games.
Myles Straw, who replaced Varsho on Saturday, was set to start in center field in Sunday's series finale.
Swanson has not pitched this season because of median nerve entrapment. The six-year veteran went 2-2 with a 5.03 ERA in 45 games with Toronto last season.
Schneider hit .067 with no homers and one RBI in 10 games with the Blue Jays earlier this season before being sent to Buffalo.

(AP) — Ethan Frey went 4 for 4 and drove in four runs, Luis Hernandez hit two solo home runs and Casan Evans put on a show out of the bullpen as LSU rallied to defeat upstart Little Rock 10-6 to win the Baton Rouge Regional on Monday night. Little Rock was bidding to become the first team with a losing record to reach a super regional. As it is, the Trojans are the first team with a losing record to make a regional final, which they forced with a 10-4 win over the Tigers — seeded sixth overall — Sunday night. Now LSU (46-15) will host unseeded West Virginia, winner of the Clemson Regional, next weekend. Evans entered the game in the bottom of the second inning as Little Rock (27-34), which entered the postseason with a 19-32 record, was building a 5-1 lead. He threw a career high 109 pitches over six innings with a career-high 12 strikeouts, including nine straight. Evans' performance allowed the Tigers to get back in the game. Frey had a solo home run in the first inning and then hit a two-out three-run double in the fourth to bring LSU within 5-4. Hernandez homered to tie it in the sixth and his homer in the eighth extended the lead to 7-5. Evans walked the bases loaded in the seventh but didn't allow a run. He gave up a couple singles to start the eighth before leaving and the Trojans made it a one-run game on an RBI single by Alex Seguine. Jared Jones hit a two-run homer in the ninth and Hernandez contributed a run-scoring single to set the final margin. ___ AP college sports:

Gonzalez and Williams homer as Miami takes Hattiesburg Regional 5-4 over Southern Miss
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Dorian Gonzalez Jr. and Derek Williams hit home runs and Miami won the Hattiesburg Regional with a 5-4 decision over Southern Mississippi on Monday night. The Hurricanes go to the best-of-three Louisville Super Regional with a College World Series berth on the line. The Cardinals won the Nashville Regional hosted by No. 1 overall seed Vanderbilt. Southern Mississippi, which lost its regional opener to Columbia 11-4, got revenge for that game with an 8-1 win and Sunday night topped Miami 17-6 to force the deciding game. Miami (34-25) had nine hits and they were bunched well. Williams had a solo home run in the first inning. In the fifth, after a two-out single by Michael Torres, Jake Ogden had an RBI double and Max Galvin drove Ogden home with a single to make it 3-1. Gonzalez had his home run leading off the sixth and then Torres had a two-out single for a 5-1 lead. Matthew Russo had a run-scoring single in the fourth to tie the game and Tucker Stockman drove in a run in the seventh for the Golden Eagles (47-16). Carson Paetow hit a two-run, two-out homer in the ninth before Brian Walters got the last out for his 10th save. Will Smith (3-0) pitched the middle three innings for the win. Shigeo Nagashima, known in Japan as ‘Mr. Pro Baseball,' dies at 89
TOKYO (AP) — Shigeo Nagashima, who was known in Japan as 'Mr. Pro Baseball' and was one of the most famous people in the country during his playing days, has died. He was 89. His death was confirmed Tuesday by the Yomiuri Giants, the team he helped make famous and eventually managed. His passing was also announced in special extra editions of newspapers that are handed out on street corners — a throwback to breaking news in an earlier time. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW He was famous in a period before Japanese players like Ichiro Suzuki and Shohei Ohtani began to star in North American MLB. Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said Nagashima 'gave bright dreams and hopes to the society.' Nagashima helped lead the Giants as they won nine straight Japan Series titles — the counterpart to the World Series — from 1965 through 1973. His equally famous teammate was Sadaharu Oh, who hit 868 home runs in his career. Nagashima played third base, finished with a .305 batting average, had 2,471 hits, 1,522 RBIs and 444 home runs. He played for 17 seasons and retired in 1974, then returned to manage the Giants in 1975 through 1980. He was fired after the 1980 season when the Giants failed to win the Japan Series during his stint.
