Hurricane Milton: British family in hotel lockdown in Florida
A British family on the holiday of a lifetime in Florida have been put into a hotel lockdown due to safety fears over Hurricane Milton.The Ball family, from Billericay, Essex, had arrived at Disney World Orlando on Saturday to celebrate their youngest child beating leukaemia.However, the dream trip was thrown into chaos when their hotel was evacuated and they were urgently moved to secure Disney accommodation the next day."I think anyone that can leave Orlando is trying to get out of the eye of the storm," Jonathan Ball told BBC News.
Mr Ball said he, his wife and their three children had been instructed to remain in their hotel until Thursday afternoon at the earliest.
US officials have warned Hurricane Milton could bring life-threatening impacts when it hits the Florida coast on Thursday morning.The category four hurricane is one of the most powerful storms to form in the North Atlantic in recent years."We've had bad news and to come here - the first time we've come to America - and get hit with a tornado is pretty unlucky," Mr Ball said."It was a bit of a shock when we got called and were told we were going to be evacuated."It's not as bad as when we were told [our daughter] had cancer though, and so we're used to bad news."
While Orlando is not due to be at the centre of the hurricane's path, those in the region have been warned about flooding and strong winds.Mr Ball said prior to being put in unofficial lockdown, shops the family visited had been stripped of water supplies.There were also shortages of petrol due to people filling their vehicles to leave the region, he added."We were in a taxi and one of the drivers said 'You know it's bad if Disney closes' - and Disney is closing," the dad-of-three said."We've had lots of messages, mostly saying how gutted they are for us. Everyone's worried but they know we're in a safe place now."

He said: 'So it's our last night in India and we have had a magical experience really, there have been some quite mind-blowing things that have happened.' Jamie added: 'We really have been on quite a journey, and then just spending the last night here in this amazing hotel, and we have just had the most delicious Tali food. A woman has been left flabbergasted after purchasing a McDonald's meal in Turkey and being presented with the bill - and she couldn't believe how much it cost her. A British holidaymaker was left utterly astounded after being charged a jaw-dropping amount for a McDonald's meal at Antalya Airport in Turkey. Known only as Emzie, the bemused traveller took to TikTok to share her disbelief at the staggering price of what she deemed an unremarkable fast food meal. Explaining she found "nothing special" about the airport fast food compared to that in UK branches, Emzie did not mince her words regarding the exorbitant price: "What can I say? McDonald's at Antalya Airport - crazy prices. They want €20, which is roughly about £18, for a Big Mac meal - that's a regular size. "We got two triple cheese burgers, a medium Coke and a medium Fanta, and in total in English that was £37.00. There's nothing special about it." The disillusioned diner felt compelled to broadcast the hefty sum online as she assessed the value for money, a sentiment echoed by many commenters responding to the expensive receipt revealed in her TikTok video, reports the Mirror. Some shared their own shocking expenditure with one saying: "We paid £94." Another person also chimed in with: "I spent €85 there for me and my two kids." This particularly affected Turkish consumers, as these products accounted for the highest share of household expenditure in 2023. "Since 2020, food prices have increased significantly around the world, and Turkey is no exception. Although inflation has started to slow down recently, food prices in Turkey continue to go up steadily, increasing by 48.6 percent in November 2024 compared to the same month in the previous year. In a video posted on the official Wellness Foundry Instagram, the couple were seen waiting at an airport gate. 'We are at the airport, just boarding. Goodbye India,' Fiongal said. It was due to land at London Gatwick this evening at around 6.30pm. Pilots issued a mayday call moments before the crash. Photos showed black smoke and a fire near the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner's crash site near Ahmedabad's airport, the largest city in the region of Gujarat. The cause of the crash won't be known until the black boxes, which hold key information and navigation data from the plane, are recovered. The flight crashed in a crowded urban area, directly into accommodation for medical interns at the BJ Medical College. 50 to 60 of those interns are feared dead. Air India also said 169 passengers are Indian nationals, 53 are British, one is Canadian, and seven are Portuguese. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the crash was 'devastating', while his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, said it was 'heartbreaking beyond words'.
