SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Exposure to the frigid cold took the life of Cassandra Shields in January. Now, her loved ones are holding an event to honor her.
The family of Cassandra Shields, affectionately known as Cassie, remembers her as an outgoing, happy person.
Sunday Funday for Summit League Championships
'She would always bring joy to like everybody I guess, you know. She's like the life of the party pretty much,' Cassie's Son, Teighton BigEagle said.
'She was always willing to help people. She would go out of her way to make somebody feel good. Bring people up when they were down,' Cassie's Mother, Jacquelyn Gayton said.
Cassie would have turned 36 tomorrow, which is why her family and friends are hosting a meal and vigil at Watecha Bowl in Sioux Falls. Fifty-percent of all sales will go to her sons.
'We're going to have a bunch of raffles. There's going to be beadwork, ribbon skirts, there's gas cards, meal cards,' family friend Ella Pretty Bonnet said.
Her body was discovered in Madison Street on January 19th when the weather was brutally cold. The event will honor Cassie, and her loved ones don't want it to be a solemn day.
'It's going to be a good energy kind of day. We're not going to, you know, try to make it a sad thing. I want it to be happy because we're going to be honoring her. You know, we're going to be it's her birthday is going to be her day, you know?' Pretty Bonnet said.
However, her loved ones still want to have a clearer picture of the events leading up to her death.
'We need answers and we need to know what these people know, whoever knows anything. So we won't really grieve until then, but we'll just try to keep each other up, you know, as much as we can and be there for each other,' Gayton said.
And as friends and family prepare to honor Cassie on her birthday, they have one request.
'Just step up and say something if you know something. Somebody know something out there and we need those answers. So we can all heal. Otherwise we're just going to be at a loss, be lost trying to figure everything out ourselves,' Gayton said.
If you have any information about Cassie's death, contact the Minnehaha County Sheriff's office or crime stoppers.

NOPE opposes more prison sites; task force reacts

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Neighbors Opposing Prison Expansion, or NOPE, opposed a site for a new men's prison in Lincoln County between Harrisburg and Canton, a site that's no longer under consideration. The group is now sharing support for construction at existing facilities. 'Right now we're just looking at taking away information from the discussions of the task force, the studies that have been conducted. And we're just really pushing for any current facilities to be looked at, to be remodeled, updated and made ready. So really, we're not in favor of them building or duplicating any services in Worthing,' said Maddie Voegeli, vice president of NOPE. SF police searching for parolee wanted for a shooting She has similar concerns with Mitchell. 'It would just be too costly,' Voegeli said. 'And there are other ways that we can spend the $600 million that would be much better options for those incarcerated and their families.' Existing DOC facilities as well as the Mitchell and Worthing area sites remain under consideration. Task force members Erin Healy and Greg Jamison are sharing how they feel about possible sites following their latest meeting last week. 'I would say there was more discussion surrounding Mitchell because a lot of Mitchell leadership was there,' Healy said. 'Less on Worthing. But Worthing, of course, is always going to be a point of interest because it is a strong site. It was the, I believe, the number three site location on our consultants' list.' 'The Worthing site probably has a better opportunity of success,' Jamison said. 'Mitchell's just too far away from Sioux Falls and all the employees who work here, who are then going to be required to kind of move there or commute, there is a problem.' 'I've always been hesitant to choose Mitchell,' Healy said. 'I believe that they might not have all of the workforce development necessary in order to host a penitentiary.' The task force has already unanimously voiced support for replacing the state penitentiary. The state legislature will eventually hear about the group's recommendations, whichever direction they go. 'The state still has an obligation to create a prison system and manage it in the best interest of its people,' Jamison said. Project Prison Reset's task force has endorsed a plan that includes fifteen to seventeen hundred beds with a maximum cost of 600 million dollars. Both Healy and Jamison, however, question if that price cap is realistic. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Police looking for suspect in attempted Luzerne County robbery, chase

WYOMING, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — 28/22 News has updates on an attempted robbery that led to a chase in Luzerne County. It happened Monday night, and police say one of the weapons used in the incident was nearly identical to that of a real firearm. Wyoming Area Regional Police are actively searching for the driver of the vehicle they say was used in the chase Monday night. Police say she and four boys approached another boy at Morris Park in West Pittston on Monday. One of the weapons used very closely resembled that of a real firearm. A Glock 19 styled BB gun, almost identical to that of the firearm Wyoming Area Regional Police Chief Turner carries, police say, was held to a boy's head and stomach in Morris Park in West Pittston Monday night. 'Very similar. Exactly, to be honest with you. Stamped with the serial number, imprinted with the Glock 19 on the slide. The only difference was the air cartridge in the magazine holder instead of a magazine,' Chief Turner explained. According to police, two of the five people who approached the young boy had guns. The one that was seized by police was in the hands of a teenager. One of them allegedly searched the victims' pockets and asked the value of the victims' belongings. PSP investigating deadly Bradford County shooting Police say that's when the boy took off on a bike and the chase began. A young female was allegedly driving the SUV. 'I'm glad that the officer located the handgun before it went down the wrong road,' Chief Turner added. Investigators also say at the park, a third man pulled out a knife. After the suspects were captured by police, all five were taken into custody. Police charged 19-year-old John Williams of Wyoming with aggravated assault, attempted robbery, and other related offenses. 'The playgrounds are there for the children to play. If you bring this nonsense and this, it's not going to be tolerated,' Chief Turner continued. Police say the other three boys involved are juveniles. Chief Turner says they will be petitioned, and he anticipates making more arrests. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
